kitesurfing Tutorial: How to Strapless Tack

  • This kitesurfing tutorial is to help you learn one of the most surprisingly difficult strapless manoeuvres, one we even had to put in extra effort to commit to learning.A strapless tack or surfboard tack is an upwind transition to turn back the other direction without loosing downwind ground. This is a great skill to commit to learning because it uses the same kite movements that will set you up for more progressive strapless freestyle tricks.

    From showing me down at Parkies and inspiring me to get into the sport to now an absolute addiction, I owe you both loads for the online help along the way the past five years!
    Moving into the strapless discipline has been a breath of fresh air this session (why didn't I do it sooner?!) and again your videos have helped immensely!
    MUCH appreciated for the good things you provide to people!

    It takes quite some intelligence to be able to teach as good as that & many skills like communication, presentation, detailed breakdown of the subject matter & organisation in a structured way, psychological analysis & soft skills. Presenting in a simple manner is something most people lack which Ironically takes intelligence & makes a great teacher. Luke I've seen you really improve & I see Graham Halyard Harney is also excellent so it was a great combo & well done on an excellent video! You're video on self landing with the safety line was excellent & it worked for me 1st time. You're making an impact & a difference! Cheers 🍻

    '...meanwhile your shoulders are always staying back to the wind... ' (2:55) that was huge for me. I am now nailing takts more than i botch them. I had seen a tutorial for duck takting and that was confusing me. That said, my takts don't quite look like the ones in your video. I bought a wakesurf board that i can spin the hell out of with my feet so i actually spin it 180 before landing again. My true kitesurf board isn't so loosey goosey on the water so i will continue to study your video where you land pointed upwind.
    Thanks for posting. Very helpful.

      haha ya the tack can be frustratingly difficault to mster hey!
      What really helped me was the angle you keep your back to the wind (i was previously trying to carve to aggresively into the wind) , and for myself slowing down the kite at 12 to get that weightless moment, back foot comes forward to replace your front foot.
      Keep practicing & you'll get it to :D

    The best experience comes with a practice. When you first time feel the pull, you understand your kite response time, than you can see what is going on.

    Tried this out but after I carve upwind and was attempting to switch feet, my board went backwards (downwind). What am I doing wrong?

    • @FlukesKitesurfing
      @FlukesKitesurfing  4 роки тому +3

      haha i used to have the opposite problem and sent the board shooting upwind & away from me.
      Maybe focus on that zero gravity moment and less board movement (less agressive carving).
      To do this you could try practicing more pushing the tail forward rather then turning the nose upwind into a big carve, then use the kites lift as its passing 12, that zero gravity moment to lift you up for the foot change.
      What really helped me dial this was the 'Only moving your shoulders/back about 30 degrees' just helped me simplify the step-step footwork and change in direction change .
      Let us know how you go

      @@FlukesKitesurfing I spent many, many years learning windsurf carving and duck jibes - had no idea those were a fraction of this frustration! I either shoot the board out or stall prematurely (save ur jokes), but the 'back to the wind' is a key tip, as the people I watch are already masters so imitating them is pointless. Gracias amigos!

    At the of session i've started to try this and was successful a few times already. A question: does the back foot have to be placed far back against the stopper (as in power jibe) here? I guess my approach here is somewhat to do a quick powered carve into upwind, but i see in video it's all a smooth motion.

    • @FlukesKitesurfing
      @FlukesKitesurfing  2 роки тому +1

      Hey Mike, stoked to hear you are getting some landed! Yew! Regarding the back foot, yes normally it's best practice to put your back foot into the tail pad prior to doing any trick. That will give better control, in this case turning, but the other benefit is that you do the same foot placement every time to help with muscle memory (only if you do the exact same thing every time) and kicking your back foot right back into the pad is an easy place to recognize and ensure its consistent.
      Regarding the carve, yes that's correct, carve it upwind. I think I talk about that more in the roll tack video if you haven't seen that. for me personally, I started by carving upwind and then kind of kicking the tail out and switching feet. But as you get more and more practice it will smooth out as seen by Graham's awesome style in this video. Hope that helps mate and thanks for letting us know

      @@FlukesKitesurfing So, today was the 3rd session dedicated to tacks. The progress is now that i've started to do them something like 3 in a row, still not perfect but getting there. Main points from my side - kite control, this one i would say is the most important. Did those mostly without sheeting in, but that should help, experienced one very clear tack while i was sheeted out but the gust picked me up during tack so it felt kinda easier. That's the progress. Cheers!

    More advice:
    1. 6:12 - keep clicking here and thinking "worky worky"... go to sleep visualizing... ;)
    2. I notice on the foot swap the rear foot seems more forward so as to not sink the tail as you plane offwind.
    3. In practice, wider boards have frustrated me less (Angry Swallow vs Celero vs Tyrant).
    Any comments on quad vs thruster configuration? (I've tried both and am equally proficient at crashing either).
