Mate, great video. You are awesome! Explanations are clear and editing is pristine. In loving your video series and learnt a lot from them. Thanks mate.
Awesome video, Evan - you explain this nuanced move in such an understandable way. Excited to put it into action. Hope to see you in the OBX this spring 🤙🏽
Very nice, I think I was previously missing some key points to try and do this. I was treating it as a pop with my kite parked at 45 or a bit higher. I see that there is actually some lifting work being done by the kite. I rewatched the sequence at reduced speed (the audio becomes quite funny). It looks like the ollie part of it is not as important as I thought (i.e., the from leg is not bending that much at the beginning of the jump). Will keep trying with this tips! Awesome work Evan!
Glad you found it helpful! Yes, there is a lot of lift happening from the kite for sure, maybe not moving the kite too much but lift from sheeting in on the bar as well and your direction change headed more into the wind helps create lift as well.
Nice! Like your style, you make it look good, it’s inspiring! Also big thanks to your cinematographers, the choice of angles, the drone work and editing, very nicely put together. Makes it really easy to follow. One question, what is your kite of choice for freestyling, and do you go for a different type depending on conditions or whether you are on flat water or in waves?
Yes, huge credit to Gwen who shot and edited this! His link in the description above. I use the same kite normally (the drifter) just because I like the consistency of the same kite in the waves and flat water for learning tricks and applying them in different ways. But....normally when I ride a twin tip I use the Switchblade and the day we shot much of this we were also shooting some twin tip stuff so I am actually on a 10m Switchblade simply because that kite still works great for any type of riding and I didn't want to bother re-rigging something else when swapping out boards.
Amazing video and information 🙌🙌 I'm struggling to get higher than shoulder hight ... Any tips in getting more hight ? Cheers man keep going best instructional tutorials out there 👍🏽👍🏽
Super helpful videos, thanks! Could you explain what you mean exactly when you say "turn the board into the wind". The way I see it, the wind is blowing into your back, but the board in your videos is kinda pointing sideways, rather than flat against the wind... Or do you mean relative, rather than absolute wind, because the kiter is moving? How can I then figure out what direction that is?
Yes, relative to the line that you are taking. So riding across the wind as you load your edge you want to point more into the wind than your normal angle of riding across the wind. Most of the time this is not straight into the wind but when you leave the water it is often close to pointed straight up wind just before you leave the water.
Aloha Evan! What percentage of your air comes from your speed/pop from the board, and what percentage comes from sheeting in/using the power of the kite?
Great explanation! Do you think board shape makes any difference? One of the things I have been struggling with is avoiding bringing the kite past 12 in the opposite direction of travel. I will try to actually ensure I use the forward hand and see whether it makes a difference. Would be great if you could make a video on strapless jumps toeside B-)
Thank you! Yes, board shape does for sure, and so do the surface conditions. If it is flatter water I like a more square outlined board, in heavier chop something with a bit more rail curve and closer to a traditional surf shape. Toeside air video is coming in the future for sure!
good info, BUT you yourself say at the beginning of the video the a 2' strapless air can be as challenging as a 25' on a twin-tip. your explanation video then repeatedly shows you doing at least 4' airs, so that is like a 50' twin-tip jump... which is something I NEVER see at my kiting spots cause that is a bit next level. I know it's hard when you are talented and been doing it for so long to remember what it is like to not have a clue, but best method is crawl, walk, run and seems like you are showing us sprints when we need to be seeing crawls...
I am landing my first strapless jumps thanks to your video Evan! Probably reviewed this video more than 10 times.
So awesome to hear that!
Awesome! This is probably the best strapless air video out there.

@@evannetsch thanks!
How big is your board?
The round nose one is a 5'3" (Xbreed is the model) and both of the ones I'm using in the waves and the one I'm standing on the beach with are 5'7"s.
Great video!!! By the way what size is your Xbreed?
Thanks! I always use the 5'3" Xbreed, great for airs and spinning...
Fantastic video! Do you use wax, or is there some sort of pad on your board?
50/50, just depends on the board I'm using on a given day but in this video I just had wax.
