Loved when she hollered at Jethro. That voice she had will never be forgotten or duplicated.
I'm 58yo and can still hear it like it was my own Granny!
Yeah and when her and Pearl would get at it better watch it, it's like 2 Wildcats in a bag trying to get out
Or the giant jack rabbit episode
@@danielsmit11 one of my favorites. 🍻
Ya buddy love 💘 that show .shows like that and some older ones will never be able to run so long or be as loved
Irene Ryan was the catalyst for everything that was amazing about this show. Her performances were all memorable. An incredible legacy left behind.
My Husband and I have been watching The Beverly Hillbillies over the last few months as a respite from all of the craziness in the world right now. I loved the show as a kid and I appreciate it even more today. Thank you for telling Irene’s story. She was an an amazing talent and was taken way to soon.
She lived the allotted years well! Didn't pine away as some do. Sadly, there's no mention of her Salvation. We're only given 70 years...more if we're strong...and I'm 73! (74 soon if JESUS says the same). JESUS saved me over 48 years ago and I'm looking forward to ETERNAL YOUTH with JESUS! GLORY!
@@SOULRELIEF22 She apparently didn't die instantly. Let's hope someone had told her about Jesus and she repented before she entered eternity. The alternative is too awful for words.
Let's all spread the message of salvation through Jesus Christ our LORD. We just don't know how long someone has.
@@kathleennorton6108
THAT'S the kind of GOD we serve! 💓 JESUS saved the thief on the cross, dying for thievery! That thief was snatched away from the devil without a Church, or a Bible OR baptism! "And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house." Acts 16:31!
In an INSTANT Irene could have been changed! Amen!
Me too love that show.
I have had health issues recently and I watch the Beverly Hillibillies DVD's to take my mind off this--I adore this show--a much simpler and kinder time
No other woman could of played that part like she did. She just owned it.
Yeah, Irene straight up was Granny Clampett 🙂
Granny was 80% of that show. Like the Sun and everyone else revolved around her.
tappedout300xc, I agree--nobody could have! She was perfectly suited for it.
@@jara4766 you're nicer about it than I am. I remember when my son went through contractions in elementary school and I thought "this proves it......even elementary students should know this"
It still blows my mind when adults think that's even a phrase.
:)
A triple ‘AMEN’ to that Truth!!
The role of “Granny” was made for Irene Ryan; I can’t imagine anyone playing that role better than her!
The Beverly hillbillies will forever be one of my all-time favorite sitcom‘s!
no lie- irreplaceable!
thers ben timez wen actors are replaced but its nevr the same... glad granny was and still is our granny!
ORIGINALY MEANT FOR BEA BENADARET BUT SHE WAS TOO"BOXOM"
I'm glad I had the opportunity to watch shows like the Berverly Hillbillies n get smart, n , another show that were n are better than this so call COMALY there no more acosto in what the do now .
Paul Henning originally wrote the Granny Moses character for Bea Benadaret. They were married or soon to be married, can’t recall the timeline. However, Irene Ryan came in to audition. She did her own hair and make-up and during her test she ranted and raved like she eventually did in the show. Henning decided to cast Ryan and showed the audition tape to Benadaret. And she agreed that Ryan’s portrayal was better than hers. Henning still wanted his squeeze to be in his show. That’s why she allowed herself to be recast as Jethro’s mother.
@@vstar7196 NOT SO PAUL WORKED WITH BEA NOTHING MORE
This series is a testament to how talented and hard-working the casts of these sitcoms that we were blessed to grow up watching truly were. They were indeed masters of their craft, and they are sadly missed. I’m glad that Irene was still up on stage until the last. Granny is iconic.
A lot of people miss this.. There was stiff competition from boat loads of fantastic talent back then. You had to have many traits to be successful in addition to being able to sing, dance and act
a typical season at that time was 30 or more episodes-far more than today-and they didn't make anything even close to the salaries of today nor was anything known then about the possibility of syndication money
“Granny” was the best written and preformed character on the Beverly Hillbillies. I loved that show as a kid.
The whole show was perfectly cast. No one could've played any of those parts any better, plus besides getting the part of jethro's mother Beau also got te part on petticoat junction which was more suited to her than the part of granny.
Definitely perfectly PREFORMED 💯😊
Watched this program all the time. The whole family. It brings forth very fond memories of my childhood. It was wonderful
But I'm sure glad that aunt that was originally cast as Granny didn't get the part. I didn't like her.
@@KenJackson_US it’s a tv show Ken. She’s just an actress. Just acting. Putting on a show. You do know the difference?
When you consider her great fortune as a performer to have offers of lucrative work her entire life, her end really isn't tragic. Sad that she was only 70, but she worked right up to the end and mercifully didn't suffer long from any debilitating disease. And she left quite a legacy of performances.
She's a good example of the idea that luck favors those who work hard.
Rest in peace Ms. Ryan. ✝️🙏
They use the "tragic ending" crap to get folks to click on the video
Agreed.. this sounds like an EXTREMELY accomplished life.
her cast members on the Beverly Hillbillies were increasingly worried about Irene Ryan's health-as the show went on-apparently, she smoked >3 packs of cigarettes a day (at one point Winston cigarettes was a sponsor of the show so I'm sure she got all the cigarettes she wanted)
@@bufnyfan1 Kent cigarettes, made by Lorillard, gave cast members of the Dick Van Dyke show free cartons. Mary Tyler Moore preferred another brand, she told Letterman, and took them to the store and exchanged them. She and Valerie Harper used to smoke together during shooting breaks, but made sure it was out of the live audience's view.
Brillant comiadian actress
Irene Ryan was very beautiful when she was young. She was perfect as Granny. RIP Irene Ryan🙏
Yeah, I really appreciate all those pictures of her in her career early in her life, WoW! No one has ever bother to show us what beautiful hot babe she was! WooHoo! Man SHe was a Looker!!!
Growing up, I always had big love for Granny. She kicked ass. The Beverly Hillbillies, Petticoat Junction, Green Arces, The Dick Van Dyke Show, Bewitched, I dream of Jeannie, etc, now these shows were my 'All Star' lineup!
I still recall the episode where Granny had a stand-up fight with a kangaroo.
Saw it more than 50 years ago. Still funny.
You mean a 6ft jackrabbit. Thay milked that for a lot of episodes. I almost felt bad for her with that.
@@ecv03 Yeah I found it on UA-cam.
Hilarious. I'm going to go watch it now. She could cook up a mean oppossum stew.
Don't forget the hippopotamus she came across. Her shriek of horror was hilarious. She thought it was a giant hog, and thought she hit the motherlode of hog jowls and bacon.
I do too..
That show was about as perfectly cast as any show I ever remember from top to bottom Jethro and Granny definitely led the way
Jethro was a little TOO good at the role. It made it tough for him to find any kind of leading roles or anything else, for that matter, because he was hopelessly typecast.
@@harrymills2770 If Carroll O'Connor could later play a Southern sheriff and Buddy Ebsen could go on to play Barnaby Jones, nobody is hopelessly typecast.
I'd say that Ellie Mae was so good at her role as incredibly sexy, yet utterly innocent, that she left an entire generation confused about what we should or shouldn't find sexy.
It is only in recent years watching re-runs, I realize what a good actor Max Baer, Jr. is.
@@akrenwinkle O'Connor and Ebsen had roles before, Baer had not.
The Beverly hillbillies were hilarious and nobody was funnier than Granny! 🙏😂
Granny you will always have a special part in my heart. Thank you for all the fond memories!
I loved her so much, that when I finished graduate school, I took on the nick name "Doc Granny".
Irene Ryan was a "perfect" granny on the Beverly Hillbillies! Grew up watching that show and even today will still try and catch an episode...thanks for the info!

Imo the show would have been flat without her.
One of the most funny, wholesome TV shows of all time! I never knew that Granny had such a lengthy pre Clampett Family career. Thanks for sharing!
I really appreciated someone taking the time to honor and share about this amazing actress. America loved her very much. Thank you
I miss Granny

She was, and still is, one of my favorite actresses. I used to love watching reruns of the Beverly Hillbillies when I was home sick from school.
Pitifull
I grew up watching The Beverl Hillbillies, so this was a true pleasure to watch. Thanks for sharing.
My grandmother told me years ago as we watched the Hillbilly's that I was going to look like Irene Ryan as Granny when I get older. She is right, am almost 67 and do look like Irene. So many people ask me if I was related to her. I have no idea, but the resemblance is uncanny. Even now, my sisters say I am just like her, the way I respond to some things.
Irene was, and presume you are Beautiful. Bless you in Jesus name ! :)
Even when I watched The Beverly Hillbillies as a kid I knew there was something special about Irene Ryan and I really like how you cover the whole range of her career. It's not surprising she worked as a performer her whole life but it's still great to learn.
I can still remember my family gathered around our black and white tv set watching the Beverly Hillbillies. This lady brought my family lots of laughs over the years. There have been very few TV shows since that have had the same clean humor fun that this show had. Granny was always my favorite character in this series.
Jethro made drag legal
She reminds me of my own grandmother. Priceless!
@@SOULRELIEF22 - Linda Kay Henning voiced Jethrine Bodine. She was Betty Jo on Petticoat Junction. Max lip synced the words.

Thanks. Awesome performer. Never be another Granny!
A true character actress, she brought the role to life with her interpretation, pouring herself into it made it so believable. A little power house of entertaining comedy was our 'Granny.' Thx for the video.
Beautiful story. I grew up watching Beverly Hillbillies, and loved all the actors|actresses, especially Granny. Great writers in the beginning, and great actors|actresses.
I don’t think it was too sad an ending, she went out still busy.
Who cares what you think!
They make these titles up as click bait. The person could have had a wonderful happy life but that doesn't get the clicks so they have to make it melodramatic. It's very misleading and this outfit stoops very low denigrating the dead to make a few bucks.

That was fascinating. Irene was a hoot as Granny! It's almost as if she was born for that role. At least she went out doing what she loved. 💜
I was 2 months old when she passed and enjoyed all of the shows growing up. I still enjoy watching all these classic comedies to this day. Goes to show how great entertainment lasts a long long time
Jethro: are you revoltin?
Granny: not as revoltin as you.
That sounds like something Archie Bunker would say.
Can't help but watch the old shows like the Beverly Hillbillies again and I Dream of Genie and be Witched on UA-cam they were the best
My favorite of that era was Green Acres

l agree.....hard to go past those shows....No Woke messages in them......no alphabet people sending messages.
Got Roku and on the Roku channel they have all of the shows you just listed.
@@laciLaszloM Those shows were full of social messaging. They were so successful at shifting the Overton Window that they've been at it non-stop ever since, even after they basically won the culture war. But rather than declaring victory and moving on, they melded with the establishment and we have what we have, now.
Shows like the Beverly Hillbillies are timeless classics because the people who played and directed them cared about making the show something special. Just wish we could go back to shows like that instead the current stuff on tv. RIP Granny Clampett you truly made a mark and made a lot of people happy.
The actors seemed to reallt enjoy playing their roles, also.
I loved her as granny and The Beverly Hillbillies
You got to love this lady what a beauty love and still watch the beverly hillbillies have seen her in a bunch of different shows
My formative years would have never been the same without Beverly Hillbillies.
I never knew her real story..a super interesting one. All I can say is when I was a kid watching The Beverly Hillbillies, Granny was my favorite character and would have us all cracking up and rolling over watching her doing and saying really funny stuff. The classic reruns from those days with Granny are still very funny!
Granny told the hippies "I'm gonna smoke some crawdads but first I got to find a little pot".
She told the cops that
She asked the surfer-hippies if they'd like gravy with their food. The one guy said, "Groovy." She said, "Whatever."
Bea Benadrette must have been a class act. Nowadays people would have sued over being passed over for a role they thought they deserved.
Hollywood has no loyalty to anyone. Bea actually referred the producers to Irene Ryan, saying, "There's your granny." And it worked out better since Bea died before BH ended its run. The producers liked Bea so much that they gave her her own show, Petticoat Junction, the year after BH started.
Bea did a lot of voice work for cartoons as well. She did Betty Rubble and along with June Foray voiced the granny character for Looney Tunes. A pity that she died relatively young.
She also had a long run as Blanche Morton on the Burns and Allen show.
Fortunately for Bea Benadrette, CBS gave her own show a season later with Petticoat Junction, which was a much better role for her.
She was great as Pearl but as Kate Bradley she was good and as the neighbor on GB and GA show. I never knew she smoked and that's what killed her
Maybe I missed it. I didn't see anything sad about this life. She did what she wanted and stared in many great movies and shows. She lead a GREAT life.
Wow great information. She was a super star.
Thank you for a fine bio & tribute to everyone's Granny! They all portrayed their roles so well that you cannot say Irene made the show-- but the Beverly Hillbillies would not have been the same without her and not nearly so much fun to watch every week.
I love the Beverly Hillbillies. Still watch on you tube all of the time on my smart tv
Irene was a neighbor of my grandparents in Brentwood during the 60’s. She was just as colorful offscreen as onscreen!
Very Cool!
Dear I-58 , Farms , nice to know.
Wonderful tribute to Granny. She was darling.
Watched The Beverly Hillbillies series as a kid in Australia, loved Granny !!
Me too..🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
My great grandmother, a woman who with my great grandfather raised me from the time I was born until I moved in with my parents and began kindergarten at 5 years old, earned her "granny" nickname due to her many similarities to Irene's character. She, like Irene, was such an important figure in my life and I'll love them both forever.
We called my grandmother Meme, but l always refer to her as my Granny. They were so much alike! I loved both Grannies, but especially my own!❤️
Granny was the grandma everybody wanted.
Irene was great as granny, but I loved my own grandmothers just fine.
Why say “everybody wanted?”
Thank you. I am 67 grew up watching Granny reminds me of my great grandmother;)
So many funny episodes that revolved around Granny, like her seeing a giant rabbit (kangaroo) or her being a "doctor" who used moonshine as a remedy. Plus she was constantly battling Mrs. Drysdale or taking a broom to Jethro's backside when she wasn't cooking up possum. LOL
It might be viewed as another deeply shallow 50s/60s TV show but it was brilliant.
It's nice to know about actors as real people, with real lives. Thank you.
Just the fact we're still talking about her after all these years speaks volumes. She reminds me of my Great grandma who was a country girl and Irene portraid the ways of the back woods to a T. I miss them both.
Thank you, I always enjoyed this show and granny so much. I did nor know her history and I'm now a granny myself. The fact granny sang the song " I'm a Woman" at an award show makes sense to me to me know.❤
I really enjoyed watching that video. I also learned a lot about Granny!
I'm so glad!
The Beverly Hillbillies...
I was born in 1959 and was just a young-un when that show was a playin’ on the television. Absolutely and unquestionably was my all-time favorite TV show -and still is! I can be down and out having a really bad day and all I’ve got to do to have a complete mood turnaround is watch an episode of TBHs and hear the beloved voices of the beloved Clampett/Bodine family and it feels like sunshine again! Jed described the feeling best when I once heard him say: “We’re all just as happy as gophers in soft dirt!”.
And oh, how I miss hearing Granny’s voice callin’ the boys: “JED!!” ... “JETHRO!!”... or making the announcement that she’s got “vittles a cookin’ and they’ll be ready for eatin’ directly!”
We were all blessed to be a part of that family back in the ‘60s, partaking of the “heapin’ helpin’ of their hospitality”.
I miss ‘em.
Pot passers
@@SOULRELIEF22
Yes, the Bodine’s and Clampett’s were pot pissers. They didn’t have indoor plumbing back in the rural hills surrounding Bugtussle and got use to using the bedside pot at night. Knowing their simple natures as we do after spending so much time with them thru the 60’s, I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that they brought the ol’ brass piss-pots with them to Beverly Hills and continued using them even though they had that city luxury of indoor plumbing. It’s a lot easier to just hop out of bed and use that bedside piss-pot when the urge wakes you up at night rather than making the trip all the way over yonder to the bathroom!
I reckon Jethro had to have a couple of those pots by his bed bein’s how he was such a big strapping large and active feller and always et so much.
Yes indeed, they were genuine pot pissers, those Bodine’s and Clampett’s truly were.
@@iDONTdoFacebook They were so dirt poor they may not have even had the proverbial "pot" to do their business in. 😄 But, I think @JESUS LOVES HIS PEOPLE! refers to that delightful Thanksgiving episode where the Clampetts and their guests shared a meal at the billiard table and used the sticks to pass around the pots of food, mistaking them for "pot passers." 🤣😆😄

Irene Ryan was my favorite actress on the Beverly Hillbillies . This was one of the best sitcoms for families across the country , she will always be remembered for her charm and her ability to make us laugh at her antics , especially her making home brew and taking a swig or two when she didn't get caught tipping that jug !
Yes she was the perfect granny! Her personality was everything. A great character actress
"Grannie" was always my favorite character in that series!
Very very nice. As rough as she was.... Everyone LOVED Granny. Thank you.
Still one of my favorite shows, they will never make any show like this or any classic again .
During WW II Irene Ryan did USO shows with Bob Hope. The GI's looked to Hope for a laugh when they were down, and Hope looked to Irene Ryan for laughs when he was down. She was VERY talented and funny. I grew up with the Beverly Hillbillies, and it has always surprised me how hard it's been to spot "Granny" in any of her other roles. She was a a real beauty as a young woman.
I remember one of her sayings - "It don't make no never mind" , meaning "it doesn't matter".
This was wonderful, thank you! I didn't know much at all about Irene Ryan. She lived a very good life! Granny was a hoot. I never understood where she found all those possums to cook in Beverly Hills! 😆😆

It is so easy to take these fantastic actors for granted, but it takes tremendous skill to develop a character and then bring that character to life week after week. What a brilliant woman.
One of the few shows I can sit down and enjoy still today even after seeing them so many times. If Aunt Pearl would have been cast as Granny the show would have suffered tremendously.
Growing up in the mid 70s we had to watch many re-runs of classic shows on TV and old movies. I feel lucky to grow up in a generation where film and TV shows are lost today or forgotten!
Great job on the biographies of these people who we have NO knowledge of their lives!!
