I was born in 1958 and everything you show relates to a memory one way or the other… I’m a particularly nostalgic and empathetic person, and when I watch these I think of my youth, I think of easier times… I’m retired now, and I’ve come across your channel several times, but only subscribed today… You do a terrific job here and I appreciate your effort. It brings back memories of my family and especially my father, who died this past January, nearly a century-old… and he was an enormous fan of Agnes Moorehead, given that most of his early life was radio only… and being a huge sci-fi fan, I remember the hatchet on the flying saucer scene like it was yesterday!
    Thanks again!

Nicholas, Thank You! For the wonderful comment and the generous support! 😁
I grew up watching all of the classics because my parents were born in the 1920's and loved all these shows and people. I lost my father in 2020 at the age of 93.
Now when I watch the classics, I feel relaxed and nostalgic. I sometimes feel like one or both of my parents are watching them with me. (Depending on the show lol)
Again, Thank You So Much 👍💜

I worshiped Agnes Moorhead as Endora, as well as Liz Montgomery. Every Friday night, without fail, we were crowded around the TV enjoying Bewitched. It was later that I found her in Citizen Kane and The Magnificent Ambersons, among many movies. Her acting skills were matched by none. I am now heading to find her on radio. I have come full circle with Agnes. RIP darling.

I loved her too. She was so much like my grandmother, who had a running feud with one of my uncles very much like Endora vs Darrin. Just to illustrate her personality, I can easily imagine Endora doing something I saw my grandmother do. My grandmother loved art, and she had a lot of originals and numbered prints hanging on her walls. One particular wall, as is typical of grandmothers, was covered completely in family portraits and photos. One of them hung noticeably crooked, and if you tried to straighten it for her she’d screech “NOOOOOO!! That picture is supposed to hang like that. Those are my in-laws!”

Per Wikipedia, re: Agnes on Welles directing her in "The Magnificent Ambersons" : In a 1973 interview with Dick Cavett, Moorehead recalled the arduous work involved before filming her climactic scene where she sinks against the unheated boiler. In rehearsal, Welles told Moorehead (who was still a novice to film acting) to "play it like a little girl," a characterization which went against what Moorehead had prepared. Then Welles told her to play "like an insane woman." Following that, Welles told her to play it "like she's absolutely inebriated." Then he said to play with "an absolutely vacuous mind." Moorehead was thinking to herself, "What in the world does he want?" She did the scene 11 times, each with a different characterization.
For the twelfth time, Welles told Moorehead: "Now play it." After those rehearsals, her playing the scene had "a little bit of the hysteria, it had a little bit of the insanity, it had a little bit of the little girl...[H]e had mixed it all up in my mind so that the characterization that I played had a little bit of all of these; and it was terribly exciting."
Moorehead continued reflecting on Welles's directorial abilities: "He never directed obviously; he always directed in some strange oblique way where you thought 'Well, that isn't right at all.' But if you put your career or the role in his hands he loved to mold you the way he wanted and it was always much better than you could do yourself. Agnes Moorehead is unquestionably one of the finest actresses as well as being one of the most underrated actresses of the 20th century. She managed to preserve the integrity of her craft by not becoming a star whatever that is. I know what it isn't, if you're a star you're probably not at the top of your craft.

I've always loved Agnes Moorehead and I remember the Twilight Zone episode fondly. When it first aired on TV I forget how old I was but I was completely gobsmacked by her acting in that episode. Not a word spoken but everything was powerfully conveyed. As for her playing Samantha's mother in Bewitched she was without a doubt outstanding and completely embraced the kitsch of the era. I never realized how very versatile and actress she was. Thank you for doing such in-depth research. It is very fulfilling to learn new things and to put a life force behind the actor.

Thank you for the terrific bio on Miss. Moorehead. She was one of the most professional and gifted actresses of the last century. Her volume of work is immense and lucky for us so much f it has been preserved for new generations to enjoy. She was a major contributor to the entertainment industry on radio, stage, films, and ultimately, television. I admire that you addressed, what some may call, the elephant in the room. You neither embraced it nor denied it. Quite right. Whether she was or wasn't a lesbian should not matter to anyone; it was her life. Artists provide us with entertainment and help us to escape our daily grind. What they do in their private lives should be of no concern to us. Kudos to you!

@@alleylew9439 My comment was addressing the "concern" that people have about other people's private lives. We will never know the truth about Agnes Moorehead's private sexual preferences. We weren't there to witness it one way or the other. There are people, who to this day, argue that Liberace, Rock Hudson, George Michael or Ricky Martin and so many others were/are straight. If you agree with that statement then you are either living in an altered reality or you're insane. Still, it doesn't concern us. It's an opinion. We just like their movies , music, and TV shows. They brought joy into our lives. If we were to concern ourselves with "lies" that are touted as "truths" we would never open a another magazine, read a book, watch UA-cam, and continue to believe that the planet we live in is flat. Paul Lynde started this entire dialogue because he was a flaming Queen and he felt that he could joke about others in his realm. It didn't make him a a liar or a person who spoke truth to power; it just got him some laughs and that's what he did. He made people 😂.

So, it’s “important” to you that people “believe” that those you listed are gay? Why should I, or you, for that matter care about them? I believe they all personally “ outed” themselves. Sounds like you’re the one with the problem. Thought you didn’t “care”!
I’ll speak about “truth” any time I please, especially when those with an agenda find it acceptable to tell tall tales when the person involved can no longer dispute it.

I grew up watching Bewitched even when it first came on TV in 1964 all the way through 1972 until it went into syndication. I STILL watch the show today, 60 years later! "Endora", the first "Mrs. Kravitz", and "Uncle Arthur" are my all time favorite characters on the show.
I am so glad you showed so many more of Agnes Moorehead's other artistic endeavors as well. She was so talented. She deserved an Oscar for her work in "Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte" from 1964. I have watched that movie at least 20 times to watch Agnes Moorehead, Betty Davis, and Olivia de Havilland act so well together.
I do not believe for one second that Agnes was ever bisexual or lesbian. I did know she was extremely religious and was eager to share her Christian faith with everyone. I had family in California in those days who knew her. Agnes was very much the conservative and endorsed GOP candidates like Ronald Reagan. They said she was a joy to be around and loved children. Sad that she never had the chance to have any children. Agnes left us too soon.

@@joypost5337 It was the fictional Jeannie's real mother, played by Lurene Tuttle - as opposed to the "mother" (and "father") that Roger met, whom Jeannie "conjured up". BTW In a twist, later, in season 4, just as Eden herself also played Jeannie's scheming sister, she played Jeannie's _mother_ twice, as well.

When Orson Welles arrived in Hollywood in the early 1940's he brought with him his Mercury Theater players who were: Ray Collins, Joseph Cotten, George Coulouris, Martin Gabel, Norman Lloyd, Paul Stewart, Everett Sloane and the only female member was Agnes Moorehead. In Citizen Kane her part was small but distinctive, with the coming of her second film The Magnificent Ambersons her performance proved to everyone in Hollywood that she was an actress to be reckoned with. In the film The Magnificent Ambersons (1942, RKO), Moorehead plays Aunt Fanny and she gives a remarkable performance as the highly sprung spinster aunt. For her portrayal Moorehead received and Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting actress but lost out to Teresa Wright in Mrs Miniver, there was some consolation Moorehead received the New York Film Critic's Award for Best Actress. The film that Orson Welles directed has astonishing visuals and a compelling narrative, focusing on the rise and fall/decay of the Amberson family at the hands of George Amberson (Tim Holt), whose family had spoiled him rotten since he was a boy. The entire family is filled with many engaging characters, perhaps no more so than Agnes Moorehead's Fanny Minafer. Fanny is the spinster aunt of George who like the rest of the family seems to pick on her often to her despair and discomfort. She has very little in her life besides her family and her cooking, and she pines for the handsome Eugene Morgan (Joseph Cotten), who only has eyes for her sister-in-law Isabel (Dolores Costello). The Magnificent Ambersons maintains a very heightened and melodramatic tone throughout the film and in its performances. Moorehead becomes so engulfed in the despair of her character that in each and every scene, Moorehead gives Fanny a larger than life character with a theatricality that borders on hysteria. Everything about her performance is magical especially with the voice Moorehead uses, It alone explains so much of her character, her voice is high pitched and strident that gets even more shrill and unbearable whenever Fanny gets angry usually with George. Her relationship with her nephew is a highly contentious one, as the two spend a good deal of the film quarreling and interrogating one another. George knows just what to say in order to get a rise out of Fanny, recognizing immediately her attraction towards Eugene Morgan and calling her out for it. The scenes between Holt and Moorehead are always very entertaining, as Holt badgers her with questions and insults and Moorehead overplays her hand with her sharp and expressive reactions. Moorehead shows the very fragile shell that surrounds Fanny, while her performance allows the audience to wait on pins and needles for her complete and total breakdown to occur. Moorehead shows the audience her motives behind Fanny's acid insinuations and makes her an extremely complex and layered character that is always a thrill to have on screen. She spends most of her screen-time in the background but she adds incredibly to every single scene she is in - I love how the camera occasionally focuses on her reactions and glances, and in those spaces between words Moorehead adds a lot of nuance and complexity to the character.
But before that breakdown occurs, Moorehead creeps around the background showing the complete and utter devastation she feels with her life, and just how sad and broken down this woman truly is. Orson Welles clearly loved to fix his camera on Moorehead, and even in scenes in which she is not featured or talking the camera constantly slips by her and we get a brief glimpse at Fanny's fragile emotional state. When Isabel's husband dies we see the melancholia on Fanny's face, its beyond just sadness for her brothers death it's a sadness that she knows that Isabel will give Morgan a choice as an option. As Morgan talks to Fanny and Isabel about how grateful he is for their long and loyal friendship without once even looking at Fanny, we see just how resentful and bitter Fanny is towards Isabel from the despondent look on Moorehead's face. It all builds to the eventual final breakdown in the boiler room after the family is officially without financial support anymore. It's a scene that is often regarded as one of the greatest bits of acting of all time, but perhaps it doesn't go quite that far. What Moorehead does give us is the final straw in the loneliness and plain desperation of Fanny, and she lets it all out in a raw and emotional outburst. It's a scene that borders on panic (as does the rest of Moorehead's performance, really) but manages to do so without completely isolating the audience.
In all of her theatrical glory, Agnes Moorehead is nothing but completely memorable and starkly emotional in the role of Fanny Minafer. Moorehead's performance plays with a larger than life acting style that completely complements her character. Fanny Minafer has the same over the top dramatic qualities of a great theatrical role, and Moorehead recognizes it and adapts it well enough to her own style.

Thank you so much for this endearing look into the incredible life of Agnes Moorehead. I had only ever seen her in Bewitched reruns, as most of her long and outstanding Hollywood career was before my time. As for the rumor regarding Agnes gender selection, I'd say she simply gave up on men after the third marriage, and devoted all the rest of her time to acting.

While I like Paul Lynde don't know if I consider him the most trustworthy source, couple that with the fact that Agnes was in a very emotional situation and may have simply chosen her words poorly. Thank you for doing this video. I have always admired her acting ability, I mean, her presence on stage or set alone is top-tier, and then her ability to emote so exaggeratedly in a believable way is just amazing.
