I disagree on some of the stuff you said. You're quoting a guy who died when he 25. Almost every young metalhead/punk has that narrow view of music. When I was a young metalhead I was the same way ….if you were listening to anything other than metal/punk you were a poser. But I've changed as I got older. Most of the shit that happened was when they were kids. I'm sure if Euronymous was still alive today his views would have matured and changed. Just go watch the segments of "What's in My bag" with Necrobutcher (mayhem) and Nergal(Behemoth) episodes. They listing all kinds of stuff that isn't black metal, or metal. Necrobutcher had INXS in his bag for Christ sake. And you said go check out Lords of Chaos, which is notorious for being full of lies.
Later Immortal albums (re: All Shall Fall) became more melodic metal instead of their more frantic earlier stuff. Also reference Abbath's band "I" and their sole album Between Two Worlds. That is a fantastic metal album, imo. I'm not a fan of Black Metal but Immortal's later stuff really hits a "chord" in me and I'm a guy who grew up with mid to late 80's NY and OC hardcore. Are you planning on doing a video on the OC punk/ hardcore scene of that time?
Why do people like idiots making youtube videos in cool bro baseball caps talking about black metal? DO you even into black metal? 18 minutes wasted and I all I see is a wankster talking shit about BM.
@@hellinterface6721 It has a very "from the outside looking in" opinion to it. I think if he delved more into it he'd discover that young black metallers and young punks had a lot in common. Even Punks had a "uniform". Black Flag even said they grew their hair long to piss off the punks and their notion of what punks should look like. And as much as I love punk, there are no virtuoso's in punk. That was the point of punk and black metal to take the music back to basic raw, simplicity. Black Metal was just as much about being a revolt as Punk was. I'm not sure how he didn't get that?
Black metal has so many different sounds, you can't throw every band together in one pot. Last weekend I went to a festival, where mostly underground black metal bands played. Every band sounded different, even if two of them where actually the same people. They had good vocals, super deep and melodic instrumentals and nice and different looking outfits.
I would like to see a black metal band go on stage in like jeans and t-shirts. I'm sure it's already happened in a public setting but I can't think of any examples.
This channel also failed to address amazing bands and albums like Thantifaxath, Deathspell Omega, Satyricon (Mother North). He was spot on for the cheesy aspects of black metal.

The punk will always whine about nazis but love the stupid communism that every other punk band preach. There are worse thing in the world than dumb people with bad politics. Communism killed far more people than the whole second world war. Doesn't mean I can't listen to Napalm Death. Most metal musicians do not have a 12 year education. Why would I care about their politics. Max Cavalera has bee in Sepultura since he was 15. I doubt he took night classes in geo politics. So he just repeats CNN talking points. Arise is still the best thrash album ever made.
Black metal, like punk, is something you either get or you don't. It appeals to a very particular type of person. At its heart, the genre is a revival of romanticism. Its atmosphere and subject matter probe the emotional depths of, and darkness inherent within, human nature. Likewise, as someone who doesn't care for much of the genre, "rigid conformity packaged as rebellion" strikes me as about the most succinct description of punk culture possible.

I like black metal because of the atmosphere, the cold, grim vocals and music. It's the furthest thing from pop music. It just feels so real and pure metal to the core
Silly criticisms from someone who probably doesn’t have that much experience with the genre. Black metal is insanely diverse, and even the bands that all share the same edgy imagery have their own signature styles and lyrical themes. But there’s far much more to the genre, a lot of experimental and melodic stuff that’s a lot more accessible.
Euronymous was a dick to everyone in the band, particularly Dead, whom he treated like complete garbage and heavily encouraged Dead to commit suicide. Necrobutcher perhaps had the most legitimate motive to kill Euronymous since he and Dead were like brothers. Varg just happen to beat him to the punch.
OttoVon Feelmark I don’t think it was self-defence but at the same time, I don’t necessarily blame him either. Nor do I blame him for the church burnings. Varg is the epitome of being morally grey. Keep in mind that Euronymous was an overall POS who also held the rights to Burzum hostage. As for the church burnings, it was more or less payback for the brutal Inquisitions during the 11th and 12th century where the Christian Church all but erased the Pagan religion. Norse paganism perhaps was the biggest victim as we now know next to nothing about the culture. Norwegian Black Metal (at least during the 80s and 90s) was to harken back to Norway’s Norse pagan root so you can kinda understand where Varg is coming from. I think he said it best; “If Christianity can’t respect Paganism, then why should I respect Christianity?”
"This nerd from Norway" I love that people are calling you out when that is literally the best description of the actual basement goblin known as Euronomus.
Thank you someone said it. I genuinely find it hard to believe that Varg killed him in self defense because Euro seems way too much of a dork to actually make the first move.
Dancing around the history until summarizing it as "Edgy bois being edgy and taking themselves too seriously"*. Seriously, it's as if he heard the plot points of who died and that one Euronymous quote and was like "Yup, that's it."
It's good to see another perspective. You know he doesn't like black metal, so he's not "fooling" anyone. And as someone who also doesn't like black metal, I thin he has valid criticisms, while as he say himself, a lot of the same point can be said about many other genres/groups.
@@wadeb5042 until the light takes us is a more fair representation of what went on. It has multiple perspectives, shows that Euronymous was actually a pretty bad guy. Exactly, like there is litteraly a fuckton of bm bands with superb songwriting and excellent productions. Not even talking about all the different subgenres wich all sound very different from one another. Black metal was a rebellion against the norm, they didn't have the technology to record music in hifi. It's not that they wanted to sound like a garage band, but since that's all they had, it became the staple of black metal sound. The history of black metal is amazing! It set a foundation for people, better technology or not, to just speak their mind and push the envelope. It was a revolution, and I'm glad it gained notoriety
Hmmm... I think I've read a quote from one of the guys from Mayhem saying that they intentionally sought out shitty equipment because it suited the aesthetic they were going for. Something about testing different microphones to see which one sounded the worst, finally settling on a cheap headset for landline phones. Could be misremembering, though.

Then 'Left Hand Path' happened, and bands started bringing Entombed albums to studios as a reference for what they wanted to sound like.

There are so many new and interesting things happening in Black Metal, this guy is talking like we just have five thousand Mayhem clones running around or something, but that can't be farther from the truth about how much experimenting goes on in Black Metal, in some ways it's actually one of the most creative genres, currently.
Dude.... he's a punk fan. How original is punk in all reality? It's not. At all. Same shit over and over, horrible vocals, talentless guitar, it's literally 50s rock trying to be edgy.
This is one where Finn is in the wrong. Also the fanbase doesn't help it. Plus Mayhem are still kings. A Grand Declaration Of War is one of the best albums of the 2000s. Cradle as well took the genre forward with Dani's love for poetry.
Thats all facts. Celestial sword doing "vampyric" black metal, warmoon lord mixing in mideval instruments, spider god is super unique, I think black metal is awesome because it lets people without access or money to get to a true studio, have an outlet to express themselves. Just like youtube, the issue is that because everybody has a platform, there's alot of untalented people in the genre who also have a platform. So black metals blessing is also a curse in that sense. But also 1 man bands are super talented and thats something you mostly only see in black metal as well.
I love black metal and I've been listening to it for twenty years now, so it is with all sincerity that I say this: shut the fuck up, dude. you sound like a clown and you make the rest of us look bad.

purple headed hedgehog it’s an aquired taste, i hated it at first but after listening to death metal for so long and realizing it never really sounded “evil” to me. I wanted to hear something that sounded like pure evil, then I listened to De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas and it finally clicked for me. The drums, the guitar riffs, the whole atmosphere. Nothing comes close to it, i fucking love it and tbh its still the only genre that stands by “fuck the system, religion, etc.” You can listen to misanthropic bm, depressive suicidal bm, trve black metal and even NS bm. No other genre of metal has so much variety to me that bm has.
@jvalex18 This "system" literally doesn't exists. It's a myth that whiny facebook metalheads spread whenever someone got a more traditional opinion on metal.
This true. Punk lost its way a long time ago. Both of them weird frankly have lost it’s way. Though I don’t agree with Varg philosophical on world views, when it come to Burzums 96 album, Filosofem his take on not just black metal but metal in general I like it. It’s all recorded in one take and not to be high production at all and keeping it pure. All the mistakes. It just brings another level rawness to it, like a cold dead winter night.

Hardcore and early black metal go hand and hand! You can hear the direct inspiration in bands like Celtic Frost, Hellhammer, Carpathian Forest, Ildjarn, etc
I'm gonna be honest with you man, Black Metal is not for everyone. I can respect that. It's obviously not for you and that's okay. But what really rubs me the wrong way it's how you think you know what you're talking about based off silly quotes and misinformation. Lords of Chaos IS ABSOLUTELY NOT A GOOD REFERENCE. Instead watch "Until The Light Takes Us". They actually interview band members, unlike LoC, where half that shit was made up. I'll admit Euronymous was kind of an Elitist asshole, and Varg is Nazi fuckwit. But not even I can deny the influence and importance of their work. They literally changed metal forever. You don't have to respect these people, but you should respect the accomplishment and craft. Now, why do people like Black Metal? Lots of reasons. One of the more common reasons is depression and any sort of inner struggle. The harsh, raspy vocals, the raw and visceral instrumentals offer people who listen to Black Metal a great catharsis. I listen to these people scream and cry about suicide, hate, and darkness so I don't have to. I also find the introspective, occult, violent, and misanthropic themes utterly fascinating. That's why I like Black Metal. Watching you shit all over a genre because some aspects of it seem silly kinda breaks my heart. But hey, at the end of the day, you're just some dude on the internet, and so am I. Also about the Nazi problem, punk has that shit too. And every genre has its portion of shitters. You need to go and do actual research about this. Listen to what Necrobutcher has to say. He's Mayhem's bassist and he knew Euronymous, Dead, and Varg. And last thing, give black metal another chance, try some newer bands. The Infernal Sea is a great example. And if you still don't like it, then Black Metal isn't for you and that's okay.
Probably the best response in this entire comment section, respectful and well thought-out. My main pet peeve normally [in BM] is its fans or its gatekeepers that still preach Euronymous' words. I think by now everyone can agree on him being some sociopath kind-of cult leader more than anything else, or aspiring to be one. Thing is, I came into black metal from 3 different routes more or less at the same time; Slavic pagan metal which is rich in melancholy and pride of their ancestors. Speaking of Nazis, there are alot of Nazis in Slavic punk and metal - mostly as communist protest, because that was what Hitler was fighting in their eyes as well - they were oppressed enough to embrace an (in their eyes) lesser evil, besides being an antisemitic cunt. Then, second route, dare not to laugh, Metallica's Creeping Death, but there are bits and pieces that have thát guitar tone that I can still find in some better produced BM. And to top it off, shitloads of (Melodic) Death Metal and me being in an urgent need for something different. I still love all of the things I just mentioned, in the eyes of gatekeepers unacceptable. I don't even wear black or paint my face. But I can feel the music, the emotion and that's what grabs me. I'm probably also supposed to dislike Mayhem's Esoteric Warfare, but I just love it. But I'd lie if I said the rest of the comments here made me laugh or shake my head, haha. Either way, thanks for your response here, it was refreshing.

Deafheaven gets a lot of shit for being a really great “blackgaze” or being the only black metal band that everyone likes, but god dammit they’re just so great
Back Metal is like the eye in the center of the vortex of this genre. A thematic and aesthetic point of convergence. It has tons of styles and harbours all kinds of misanthropic ideologies along with pure creative geniouses and just plain normal people wanting to say their part. It can be rough, draggy and noisy or technical, speedy, lyrical . It can be a simple emotional exclamation or deeply contemplative, political or removed. It can be paired with folklore or futurism, paganism or contemporary beliefs, death and hope etc etc. You'd have to have a very narrow scope and very limited experience in the genre to think it's "boring"

@@ThePunkRockMBA Black Metal doesn't work like Punk does. If you listen to the "greats" of Punk: Dead Kennedy's, Black Flag, and the Ramones you will hear the best the genre has to offer with very little effort. But if you listen to the "greats" of Black Metal: Mayhem, Emperor, Immortal, you will hear only the tip of the iceberg, and walk away with a very basic idea of what the genre has to offer. This is why Punk is a easy to get into genre, finding the good stuff is easy. Black Metal on the other hand is a very deep genre with many layers and will most likely not resonate with the listener easily, but the genre is more rewarding over the long term ie the longer you stick with Black Metal and spend time hunting, the more hidden gems you'll uncover. I started listening to Punk when I was 14: Dead Boys, The Damned, Misfits. The songs were short, simple, and the kind of stuff you could sing-a-long to, but it was when I discovered G.I.S.M. and Plasmatics which got me down the road to Metal and ultimately Black Metal. And Varg is actually a Pagan not a Satanist or a Nazi even though he openly says he's not fond of Jews, those are some of the inaccuracies
Black metal is one of my favorite generas of metal. I think it is often a logical step for people who are constantly looking for more and more extreme metal, plus it's the next step in rebellion. It was also very closely tied to punk in it's DIY attitude. While punk was raw and in your face about politics, black metal was raw and in your face about religion or being anti-religious. It took punks cheap/raw recordings but turned up the speed by 1000 and instead of talking about Ronald Reagan or some politician it talked about how Christianity had destroyed humanity, in particular most bands in places like Norway felt Christianity had destroy much of their heritage which is why so many bands talked about pagan beliefs or beliefs that were held prior to Christians forcing conversion on so many people. A lot of those early recordings were very good and even though the kids around that time did some stupid things, just as many kids in the punk scene did, that doesn't take away from some of the fantastic recordings or ideas that were originally coming out at that time. Unfortunately, just as almost any scene, after about the first year or two so many copycats came out of nowhere and used the exact same formula that a great idea quickly became old and overused. Great video though as always.
The simp/weeb fest in the baby metal video is a close second. My favourite part of these videos is that literally any criticism is validated and confirmed as entirely accurate within the first 10-15 comments max.
@Saitama What is or isn't good and/or special is purely based on personal choice. The dude in the video implied there is no variety which is totally untrue.
@Saitama He got called out because he did not make sense in this video. One thing I will have to agree with you though. Black metal is not the most innovative genre of music. And what exactly do you mean by accomplishment?
I felt like Venom was almost Satire, like people already claimed metal was satanic so they made it come to life and trolled everyone, they didnt believe half of what they said.
That's what Cronos wanted Venom to be really. Some interview went in among the lines of them liking Black Sabbath for satan and devil and such but having it be ruined by Ozzy vailing for god to help. Another one was that he wanted to bring "piss and puke and blood" or something along that line to Metal, to make it threatening and dangerous again i.e bringing aggressiveness from Punk to the mix. Just for interest listen Venoms "Welcome to Hell" album and then (punk band) Amebix's "Arise!" album you can hear certain similarities between the two which was due to them keeping contact with each other in very early 80s.
I like black metal because it feels like home. I'm Australian born but my heritage is Welsh/Scandinavian and I never felt like Australia is my true home. Black metal, the lyrics, the melody does something to my soul like nothing else. Others may understand the longing you have in your soul for a place or a home you don't even know and black metal takes me there. It's a heritage, a culture that so many feel deep in our core from our Scandinavian roots that we've never got to live being born elsewhere..
Hell yeah man. I’ve been into Black Metal for over a month now and I still feel like a noob. I’m 16 so it’s hard for me to find any shows to go to. I need to find ways to get into the “more underground” shit. I love all genres in general but I feel like Black Metal is my place

Black metal, like punk, is something you either get or you don't. It appeals to a very particular type of person. At its heart, the genre is a revival of romanticism. Its atmosphere and subject matter probe the emotional depths of, and darkness inherent within, human nature. Likewise, as someone who doesn't care for much of the genre, "rigid conformity packaged as rebellion" strikes me as about the most succinct description of punk culture possible.

Im pretty certain Finn was on his way to kill Euronymous
I was going to try to get him into therapy and on anti-depressants actually! Could have saved his life
Nice okawari art

Modern bands like Mgla, Batushka, Deafheaven, Zeal & Ardor, Uada, In Twilight's Embrace, Behemoth, Numenorean, Winterfylleth are really creative and decent. Everyone should give them a chance. And no, none of these apart from Behemoth wear corpsepaint. This video just focuses on stereotypes of a typical Norwegian black metal band, there is a whole different world of black metal out there.

Ultimately though I guess it’s not for everyone and nor was it ever intended to be but it is for me and helped me through the darkest moments of my life when nothing else seemed to so I value it possibly more than any other kind of music.

A natural progression really.

I hope the point will come for all metalheads where they won’t limit themselves and enjoy the vast greatness every genre has to offer.
