I believe the song is telling women all over the world that they do not have to be ruled by men and that they are worthwhile and have rights.

Pink Floyd in the early 1990s was the best concert I ever saw. Sadly, I never attended a Peter Gabriel concert personally. Wish I did.

‘Come talk to me’ opens the concert, then leads into ‘Steam’ (which always makes me chuckle as his hair sticks up after the steam blasts. You catch him trying to smooth it down), also ‘Solsbury Hill’ and ‘Digging in the dirt’. All top notch and worth a watch. Enjoy!

I believe you were right the first time. Tony is playing an electric stand up base here. The Chapman stick has a flat fret board.

And has some extra strings. What a wonderful instrument, guitarists and bassist both can enjoy it. I've noticed either someone "gets it" right way or they sit and look at it. Suggesting to L33 he check out Levin's band ' Stick Men".

I love the two songs that you checked out so far, but the opening number to the concert is one of my favorite Peter Gabriel songs. *COME TALK TO ME* ua-cam.com/video/T7GRBHoTUbg/v-deo.html was written to his daughter Melanie when she was a young child. Peter was going through a bitter divorce and his daughter, too young to understand what was happening, stopped talking to him. He wrote the song to explain that he loved her so much and that she was not part of the problem. They eventually made amends, and years later Melanie became a singer herself. She joined him onstage at a concert in Bruxelles and sang the song with him (chills): ua-cam.com/video/4J1gWMLbV70/v-deo.html (good drumming on this one too)

Peter’s third album “Melt” had no cymbals on it. It sounded more percussive because of it. “Intruder” features first use of gated drum that was accidentally discovered during take. Phil Collins said he”ll gladly use it if Peter passed on it. It was used a lot on 80s records.

The tree on stage is used in a few songs in a row, each time more meaningfully. This ingenious show was staged by French-Canadian Avant-Garde Theatre director / actor Robert Lepage.
Peter Gabriel didn't merely "get caught up in" World Music, he introduced it to Western ears in 1977, and especially on his African-influenced albums from 1980 and 1982. (All four of his first four solo albums were eponymous.)
Check out the polyrhythms on "Moribund the Burgermeister" from 1977, the album with the blue car on the cover. Then his song that changed international politics in 1980, "Biko", and then "The Rhythm of the Heat" from 1982. Amazing percussion, and his 1980 album is where the giant sounding "Phil Collins Sound" drumming was invented. It shaped the sound of the entire decade.

Very nice pick, Lee! Gabriel was an early explorer of the riches of African pop music and "Shock the Monkey" became a major hit off his fourth album in 1982, released around the same time as he launched the WOMAD festival, a trailblazing forum for "world music" and ethnic/cultural crossover acts. The live version here, recorded on tour in the US, is simply amazing, it builds and builds to a climax where you can feel the tribal heat across the venue.
Peter Gabirel- Shock the Monkey (live): ua-cam.com/video/H4enPK3pZLI/v-deo.html
That 1983 live album is awesome, just as powerful and groovy as Seconds Out, and with superb vocals from Peter right through. 💗

@@AirDOGGe I vividly remember a guy who posted on a long-gone internet forum dedicated to Gabriel's songs: "is there somebody who can tell a Frenchman what the song "Shock the Monkey" is about?". The line sounds very funny if you imagine it said with a typical "French accent", like in the movies...😄 (I'm fluent in French myself)

Salut... The early-to-mid 1980s were an exciting time in music and film, especially in Montreal. We were the gateway into the Americas for bands from Africa and Europe. I saw Juluka's first concert outside of South Africa at Le Spectrum de Montreal, for example. Plus, we had amazing home-grown talent spreading their wings, which I used to photograph at Statio 10 night club.

Lee, go to the Top of this Concert. The Song, Come Talk to Me, sets the Tone for the Concert. It's brilliant to how Gabriel "solidifies", realizes Metaphors. Very "Lamb-like" in its Props, and very,.. British.

This live version of SHAKING THE TREE is best heard and seen when ACROSS THE RIVER leads into it. Next time.
Trivia: Peter wanted a huge tree that covered the whole stage, but due to limitations had to settle for that small one. The man is an artist. ;-)

Because you are a drummer as it is said, so from the same live, go check ACROSS THE RIVER (just seen that @user-dq5xx9hi4q did the same recommandation so I agree with him/her), but also the opening track of the concert : COME TALK TO ME (nice drums from Manu too).
For you information : Shaking the tree, written with Youssou N'Dour is about the Woman condition all around the world.
Suggestion ? Do all the Peter Gabriel's work, beginning by all the lives videos you can, even about the same songs ! All of them are amazing.
