Peter was the first musician to raise awareness of the Aparthied state in South Africa. He wrote the song Biko in 1980, no-one in the west was even aware of the atrocities being carried out against South Africans back then. Steven Biko galvanized the people to stand up against an occupying regime and it was thanks to his steadfast courage that a massive groundswell of resistance took hold and the world finally noticed and the governing regime was deposed. Stephen Biko was arrested and beaten to death by Police before he was even incarcerated. Peter Gabriel ends every one of his live performances with this song. I’ve seen him twice, 40 years apart, and this is such an emotional way to end the night. I imagine that Mandela and Biko were personal friends.

Peter had been involved and was attracted to the percussive uniqueness of African music as can be heard in the album Security. I don't think he's ever come back. Martin Scorsese got Peter to do the soundtrack for Last Temptation of Christ. He used only instruments available in North Africa and the MIddle East at the time that Christ was walking the Earth, and created a symphonic masterpiece. Props to Paula for not breaking out in laughter when he's hanging off the line practically in her face. Brilliant staging. The Slegehammer video is brilliant, but it's almost a shame to react to because it would be great to hear more reaction to the music. He always end his show with Biko, and the line - the rest is up to you - then leaving the stage - Peter first, then the band, drummer last - leaving the audience to continue the song.
He certainly lead the "world music" movement with his record company (Real World) and his music festival (Womad) back in the 80's. As far as growth, i'd say The Beatles (from Love Me Do to Sgt. Pepper's in five years) or Joni (from The Circle Game to The Jungle Line in five years) did grow reaaaalllly quick. Peter G. presented Joni with an award back in the early 90's right after they collaborated on My Secret Place, and talked about her influence, notably her foray into african and brazilian percussions in the mid-70's.

What Gabriel did here wasn't innovative - it was actually a throwback to what stop-motion pioneers were doing 80 years before him. Much of what he did here was just recreating what filmmaker, George Meliies did in 1902.
And it was used in movies until the 80ies. One of the last movies I know about is Clash of the Titans from 1981 with the work of Ray Harryhausen who was one of the grandmasters of this techniques. I always saw Sledgehammer also as a hommage to previous movie makers.
The US cop show, Miami Vice was huge in SA: one episode played in SA during Apartheid times got to the end, and the censors hadn't played it that far: 'Biko' boomed into the households of SA. Love SA - beautiful country: always remember: the ANC did not 'win' - it was the ordinary Bokke that decided enough was enough and ended Apartheid.
About xhosa look here: ua-cam.com/video/n-4U2hfMpnk/v-deo.html There is also a movie about Biko with Denzel Washington and Kevin Kline. At first sight I thought it was a good idea to make a movie like that about Biko's actions and death. But when I saw it a second time I was disappointed because I then found out that half of the movie is not about that topic but turns into a heroic epic about a white journalist bringing his book about Biko out of South Africa. "Come talk to me" is about communication difficulties between him and one of his daughters.
(Steven?) Biko was a figure in South Africa that was part of the Anti-Apartheid movement. I believe he was beaten to death in prison by apartheid authorities but google it for yourself. I find the whole thing depressing since it seems to be an example of one form of human brutality and injustice replaced by another.
The dancing turkeys reminded me of a scene from a movie called "Erasurehead," a movie by David Lynch. The movie was like a nightmare. I cannot explain the connection however. ua-cam.com/video/JamnCWXNsPs/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
'Good singer' is a very subjective opinion! Curious who you DO find is a good singer? What is your criteria? Tone, pitch, clarity? To many, PG is an excellent singer. Rougher tone, but his pitch is excellent. I liken him to Bryan Adams - more of a gravelly tone, but still quality pitch & dynamics.
He doesn't have the greatest voice, but he is a great artist and his song writing makes up for not having a perfect voice. Compared to, for example, Greg Lake, I love Lake's voice but would prefer to listen to Peter's songs.

Interesting though is many years later Melanie started touring with her dad and they sing that song together and you can see it in Peter Gabriel's Growing up tour, I think. You should give it a watch.
Keep up the great work 👍
You rock man. Thank you so much 😊 Peter is an amazing artist. And no I didn’t know that… thank you for sharing that
@L33Reacts just to make you jealous lol, I saw Peter's Secret World live tour here in Australia back in 94. And on a side note I saw Steve Hackett a couple of years back. He was doing Genesis Revisted tour and he did the entire Selling England by the Pound album plus all of Three Sides Live.
Tony Levin of King Crimson on bass
Trippiest video ever
Lay your hand on me, live from Athens
Top 10 as far as creativity for videos.
"Is that a turkey doing kung fu?"
No. It's a chicken dancing. Now it's two.😁
That was called stop action/motion animation. That was 2 dead chickens dancing.
React to his songs Big Time and Steam please.
You're dead on when you say this video looks like pictures strung together since a lot of it is stop motion animation. I can't imagine how much time it took to film!
Peter's sneaky, if you re-read Sledgehammer's lyrics and watch the video again you may notice the entire song is about sex.
I highly recommend Peter's "Wallflower" as well. An anti-political prisoner masterpiece.
Peter gabriel, manu katche, david rhodes, paula cole, tony levin....shot in Modena, Italy, 1993
Hope you'll play the video version of "Shock The Monkey"
It did make the list! I’m sure Lee will play it in the next two Thursdays
Stop-motion animation was being done as early as 1900's (meaning 1900 - 1910) and was even crazier than anything seen in this Gabriel video, just FYI.
A show against apartheid.
You should make time to watch the movie "Cry Freedom"

There is also a movie about Biko with Denzel Washington and Kevin Kline.
That time was also a massively inspiring aspect of the human will to overcome evil
Hopefully you watch the Sledgehammer video again, to catch all the great visual stuff you missed looking away
All single frame live animation before CGI.
The dancing turkeys reminded me of a scene from a movie called "Erasurehead," a movie by David Lynch. The movie was like a nightmare. I cannot explain the connection however. ua-cam.com/video/JamnCWXNsPs/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
Eraserhead
While the sentiment is felt in my heart, I was never a big fan of the song, Biko, musically speaking.
And now for Palestine? - Oops …
You're missing out on some good songs if you don't go past Abacab, just saying...
LAME. He is not at all a good singer.
That’s just like your opinion, man.
He doesn't have the greatest voice, but he is a great artist and his song writing makes up for not having a perfect voice. Compared to, for example, Greg Lake, I love Lake's voice but would prefer to listen to Peter's songs.
