EXTREMELY helpful dude. I'm on the truck with a trainer now for Swift and he's been throwing a bit of stuff here and there at me about the logs, but it's ALOT to take in at once or even in little bits. This, I could listen to 3-4 times and get it down pact. Thanks so much for this upload!
You can also use PC to be smart about making a delivery if you were turned away at a receiver. I would have a pick up at 7am and it delivered at 1am. I would drive my whole clock and get to the receiver and get turned away. So I would find a truck stop nearby and about 30 minutes to appt time I would PC to the receiver
Yep, because since you arrived on your clock initially, you have "advanced the load" as far as it can be advanced. This means you can drive away and back to the receiver using PC as you are no longer advancing the load. Great point.

I worked for Qualcomm for 20 years. I got assigned to lead a project for the Qualcomm semi truck tracking division. The project go live was going great. And then a developer ran a script he was not supposed to. Brought down the entire system and all the devices were down for 4 hours. Let's say that the rear end kickings started from the customers and didn't end internally for weeks. I think that was around 2015.
I’m about to get my CDL back again. I dropped it 4 years ago for a local job and relationship. Single now and headed back out. Watching your videos making exciting to be back out.

I hadn't really thought to research it, so that was a nice bonus. But what had been confusing me (and I've seen a few other explanations on it) was recaps! Everything I've seen on the subject just confused the hell out of me even more. And then there was this. It made so much sense man! Thanks for getting this out there. I was confused about the break, I thought we had to take a 30 minute break during the first 8 hours of drive time, but it is the first 8 hours of on duty time. Excellent explanation, thanks again.

I'm in Germany (for the last 11 years) but will be back next week. I'm looking forward to getting back in the truck and also doing some videos. You got some great videos JJ (so does Mr. Oakdale). Can you put the link for your 8/2 Split reference? Can you also suggest some video apps to use when using an android phone? Thanks JJ. Stay safe and keep on truckin'. 😊
Hi Morphious421, I can only recommend you to leave Germany as soon as possible! It will soon be very uncomfortable to live here thanks to the corrupt government in Germany! Unfortunately I can't leave otherwise I would have gone long ago! and I tell you as a German who was born here! my country is lost !!! good luck and stay safe.
this is my first clock video and its anwsered so mank fking questions i had. I guess the 34 hour reset is frowned upon if you use it early by driving hard everyday in the 8 week period. Eventually that is what I would want to do after getting some conditioning underneath my belt. Running shorter loads gives you a smaller work week but inevitably you'll need to reset to keep your profits up. Especially if you're a company driver getting paid by the mile and not just the load. Does that sound right?
It does, but you have to keep in mind, some days will be naturally short on hours. Specifically delivery and pick up days. A lot of off duty time when at a shipper or receiver saves your clock and let's you build back up without needing a reset. That's the advantage of the short "day hopper" loads.
Ohhhhhh ok that makes Soo much sense now. I'm doing flatbed for now. Not a lot of detention and waiting in this division. My last trainer didn't workout. He was a beast on driving.
Question, you were saying the only way to reset your 14 hour on duty and 11 hour driving is for a 10 hour reset. So, if I drive 10 hours, still have 3 hours left on my on duty and start my 10 hour reset, will that 14 hours reset? Or, do I have to add those 3 hours still on the 14 hour clock to my 10 hour reset?
Regardless of how many hours you have left on your 14 or 11 hour clock, 10 straight hours in off duty and/or Sleeper Berth will reset both of those clocks.
@@JJtheTrucker same. Automatically reset on my home time. Which I start tomorrow...😁. By the way congrats on a year. Hopefully run into you sometime. Stay safe brother...its crazy out here
Also for you company mentality guys looking at his miles they are irrelevant as he is driving for PERCENTAGE of load NOT miles. So his goal is to make the most per load with least amount of fuel and time used up! Different kinda trucking.
Can you still get recaps of you go off duty for, let's say 24 hours, in the middle of the week? Or do you have to be on duty for 8 days in a row without missing a day?
Yes, you'll still get recaps. Recaps are simply getting back the hours you used while you were on duty 8 days ago. If you take a full 24 hours off (but not 34 hours) that means you worked 0 hours on duty for that day. 8 days later, that recap day will give you 0 hours back in recaps.it sounds like it's not good, BUT, taking 24 hours off means you're saving yourself from using those hours up front, thus extending the amount of available time you have to use for the next few days. Hope that helps.
Great explanation of the hours of service. I used to drive in the 70's when timekeeping was a lot simpler. So, when she started talking about all the clocks, I was a little confused. There are some minut points I'd like to add. Drivers are supposed to take their 30-minute break before the 8-hour clock runs out. DOT states your break must be taken "within" your 8-hours. So, starting your day at 8 a.m. means taking a break no later than 3:30 p.m. Also, "on-duty" is defined as any work, including commuting to and from the job. Although there is no way to enforce this, drivers should keep in mind that they could be questioned about their drive-time to work. Thanks again for a great video!
What happens when your clock runs out and your no we’re to stop and you have run out of time. Can you turn off your log and keep going till your at a place to stop
Nope, no way to turn off the logs. If that happens, you're in violation, and if you get pulled over or pulled in for an inspection in the next 8 days, you'll be fined and assessed CSA points. You have to plan ahead so you don't get I to a situation where that happens, even if that means stopping a couple hours sooner than you wanted to.
JJ , Thanks for all the good video's you do keep up the good work and helping others with the great knowledge u have. Question- At a shipper or receiving do you have to log 15 min when going or pulling out of door ? Thank u
Technically, no. You want to avoid set times because things never take the same amount of time. Sometimes it only takes a few minutes at smaller shippers, but larger shippers may take longer. And when the truck moves, you'll need to select Yard Move anyway, so that logs the necessary (and real) time used.
@@JJtheTrucker, So what do you put on your eld when stopped at a pick up or drop off ? Like when your fueling do u go on onduty and in the remarks put fueling ? Sorry just new to trucking and would like the most Sense on these ELD.
When I'm at a shipper or receiver and I have docked and I'm not moving anymore, I go into off duty status. Then I go into the Sleeper Berth and watch TV or I may go out for a run or walk. When I'm fueling I do stay on duty and do note it that I am fueling. Hope that helps.
Im from England and i wish our hours of service was similar but we are under eu regs which can get confusing. A lad got done for driving 96hrs in a fortnight as we are limited to 90
Let’s say you go off duty and press Personal, and you drive the truck with a trailer and your toys personal Vehicle, would that be counted as driving time/ on duty?, I mean you own your truck then you go on Vacation and you wanna tow or haul your own personal Vehicle will they allow that?
Good question. No, when you run under Prime's Authority, that is not allowed. You can only haul their freight and trailers. I'm not sure what the rule is if you're under your own authority.
Very helpful, but if you could just do another video of just how to gained more hour on Recaps that would be perfect I'm having hard time to understand that. Thanks!
Is it true that the the 10 hours remaining after 14 hours(available for on duty), have to be used for sleeper berth? Does that mean that things like shopping can only utilize the 14 hours pool?
Good question. Fortunately, no. The 10 hours can be off duty and/or Sleeper Berth. The Sleeper Berth is only required when doing a split. Such as an 8/2 split. The 8 hours needs to be in the Sleeper Berth. The smaller number can be off duty and/or Sleeper.
I'm curious how fast your truck will go and if you are company or lease? I'm a company driver for prime and my truck tops out at 58 mph or 62 mph if I set the cruise control because of the governor.
When I was at Prime, I was a Lease /op then an owner/op. We can set our governer as high as 65. Im with Landstar now so now I set my Gov to 75 which is the speed rating of the tires.
Do you get time added back on to your total time? Or is it considered off the clock when they are loading and unloading your truck. How does the time on the driving time work when you are sitting and having your truck loaded/unloaded?
Yes, the total amount of time you were on duty 8 days ago will get added back to your clock at midnight (the 9th day). As for sitting at the shippers /receivers, there are various thoughts on that. Local guys tend to stay "on duty" but for the most part, otr drivers go off duty. We can go into our sleepers and watch TV, play Xbox or even take a nap, so why not save our on duty time for when we're actually working?
JJ is right you log that as sleeper berth when you're getting loaded or unloaded but I show 20 min on duty time as either loading or unloading before I go to sleeper berth. Your logs need to show some sort of activity. If it was drop and hook I personally log on duty not driving with a check in notation for about 2-5 minutes then ten minutes for a pretrip on my new trailer I'm picking up and nothing for the trailer I'm dropping other drivers do it differently. Technically though whenever you are performing any work related task you are supposed to show yourself in an on duty status so technically you should log on duty not driving for checking in at the guard shack then say you go to the shipping office next you technically should log on duty for that then log on duty when you drop your trailer then on duty again when you pick up a new one and then on duty again when you check out with your paperwork but nobody does that because it would eat up your entire clock

Hi Morphious421, I can only recommend you to leave Germany as soon as possible! It will soon be very uncomfortable to live here thanks to the corrupt government in Germany! Unfortunately I can't leave otherwise I would have gone long ago! and I tell you as a German who was born here! my country is lost !!! good luck and stay safe.
always good for a refresher, thank you!
You bet!
this is my first clock video and its anwsered so mank fking questions i had.
Thank you so much
You bet! 😊👍
New driver asked about hours couple weeks ago. Didn't believe me when I said I can run a month without a reset
Exactly! Ive never done a forced reset. Any resets just came naturally with days off here and there.
@@JJtheTrucker same. Automatically reset on my home time. Which I start tomorrow...😁. By the way congrats on a year. Hopefully run into you sometime. Stay safe brother...its crazy out here
Thanks. Enjoy the home time.
Also for you company mentality guys looking at his miles they are irrelevant as he is driving for PERCENTAGE of load NOT miles. So his goal is to make the most per load with least amount of fuel and time used up! Different kinda trucking.
Exactly. I actually look at $/day instead of $/mile.
@JJtheTrucker Thank you so much! And thank you for the quick response. Us truckers have to look out for each other! Stay safe out there.
Huh?
You can take a 30 minute break On Duty too to gain the rest of your time.
Yep. Of course it would figure that they'd update the rules for that right after I made this vid 🤣
Very informative video
Thanks
What happens when your clock runs out and your no we’re to stop and you have run out of time. Can you turn off your log and keep going till your at a place to stop
Nope, no way to turn off the logs. If that happens, you're in violation, and if you get pulled over or pulled in for an inspection in the next 8 days, you'll be fined and assessed CSA points.
You have to plan ahead so you don't get I to a situation where that happens, even if that means stopping a couple hours sooner than you wanted to.
That why Canadian hours of service is easier the only thing you need to remember is we have a 70/7 but only need a 24 hour off every 14 days
Yeah that's a lot easier to remember.
Plus we can split, don’t have no 30 min break and can drive 13 hrs
So say you don’t use them 6 hrs as you say you’re not are they added to the 10hrs and 45 mins of recap time to make 16hrs on your 70
JJ ,
Thanks for all the good video's you do keep up the good work and helping others with the great knowledge u have.
When running on recaps do you still take a 10 hour break?
Yes. You still need to take your 10 hour breaks so your 11 hour drive clock and 14 hour shift clock will reset.
Very helpful.. thx
Im from England and i wish our hours of service was similar but we are under eu regs which can get confusing. A lad got done for driving 96hrs in a fortnight as we are limited to 90
Wow, that does not seem like enough hours. Maybe we get more hours because it takes us longer to cross the country?
Can you do a video explaining Comdata check
Good idea... I can do that.
Thanks!
So if you don’t want to run on recaps, just average 9 hours of driving per day?
8 hours, 45 minutes of on duty time, which includes driving, pre or post trip inspection, fueling, etc.
Great vid 👍
Thanks JT
16:30. Review
