Cuisinart Airfryer Toaster Oven Review TOA-65C

  • I've been testing out the Cuisinart AirFryer Toaster Oven (Model: TOA-65C) and it's blowing my doors off. I've baked everything from bread to sopapilla in it, and it makes the crispiest fries without any added oil. Just a note because it's come up: air fryers have smaller chambers and higher speed air circulation than a convection oven. Convection is not the same as air fry.
You can see my full review on Best Buy's blog: blog.bestbuy.ca/appliances/sm...
A few people have asked for my bread recipe. I make a modified version of my Grandma's recipe. I use a kitchen scale to measure.
    Shelly's Bread
    600 ml warm water
    12 grams active yeast
    1 tsp sugar
    1000 grams flour
    100 ml olive oil
    1 tsp salt
Mix yeast and sugar in water. Let stand until foamy (about 10 min.)
Mix flour and salt. Add oil to flour mixture, then pour in yeast mixture.
Mix well with a dough hook on a stand mixer (that's what I use). Once the dough pulls away from walls of the bowl, let stand for 10 min. The dough might be sticky. Don't add more flour.
Mix again for a minute. Let stand for 10 min. Mix again for a third time. The dough shouldn't be sticky anymore.
Put the dough ball in an oiled bowl and cover it with a towel. Let sit for about an hour.
The dough should double in volume after an hour. Once it has you can make into bread loaves or buns. It makes 3 standard size bread loaves and around 16 buns. I weigh the dough out before making buns and I usually use 75 grams per bun. The toaster oven will only fit 8 buns at a time.
Let your bread loaves or buns rise for about an hour before you bake them. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
I've got a system for baking both buns and bread loaves for 30 minutes total. You rotate the loaf pan at the 15-minute point, and at the end of 30 minutes, you brush with butter before pulling it out.

Excellent review thank you! I'm in Australia and just purchased the TOA - 65XA that looks exactly the same as the one you have here. After looking on several sellers websites and UA-cam reviews I had to call Cuisinart to obtain the correct external dimensions, most were the carton measurements or just incorrect, so for anyone that needs that info.

I just bought this oven and am learning about how to use it, as in how the dial, the screen and the start button work. I've tried baking biscuits so far and have not had success. So I set it up to bake, then the temp (because of convection I lowered it from 475 to 450), then the time, then it goes to preheat, then I pushed the flashing start button which then became a steady non flash. A little later it displayed "ready" so I put the biscuits into the oven. I pressed the start button again to bake and to start the timer but the oven went off so I went through the setup again and didn't press start, but I don't think it changed from preheat to bake because the biscuits ended up very dark on top, did not rise, and really did not bake. And they were "done" within about 5 minutes. If I'd left them in the oven for the full 11 minutes they would have burned. The next time I tied to bake biscuits I took them out sooner which made them great on the outside but raw inside. It's like it never switched from preheat to bake, even though it displayed "bake". I don't dare put the time into baking bread until I know how to make it switch from preheat to bake OR find out that I have a lemon and return it. Bottom line is that the transition from preheat to bake and turning on the timer is not clear or seemingly even possible. I'd appreciate any help (including exactly which buttons to push, when, and what to expect to see displayed) you can give me.

      Hi Leslie,
There is definitely a learning curve with this oven. It runs hot both with the air fryer and the convection oven, so you have to adjust your settings according to convection and according to your own instinct. I realize that sounds a bit odd, but I've been tweaking my temperature and time and I'm getting great results.
My first recommendation is to set your oven to preheat, but when your preheat time passed (about 5 min.), turn your timer back on to the full time. I treat the preheat like it's a manual step. I'm not in front of the oven right now but I believe you can do that by tapping the dial once to get to temperature and another time to get to time. So, for example, if your buns take half hour make sure your timer says half hour when you put them in. Or, if I was baking buns in it, I'd do 25 minutes instead.
I set my timer for 15 minutes for bread and when the timer dings I look at it, rotate it in the oven (which you don't have to do because it's convection and it should be even, but I'm old school), and turn it back on for 10. In my experience this oven will bake bread in 25, not 30 minutes.
In general, I would also drop whatever temperature you've set it to by at least 25. If you bake buns at 350, then drop it to 325. If you want to make fries in the air fryer and the preset says 450, drop it to 400. It's a hot little appliance, and the worst that can happen when you drop the temp is it takes longer to cook. I've done fries at 375 for 10 minutes and they are perfect. The preset says 450 for 15.
I hope that helps. I'm a huge fan of this toaster oven. It's still one of my favorite appliances.

Hi, can i ask you a question? when you plug the air fryer, do you have to adjust the time every time? bec. the manual says unplug when not used. But if you unplug it more than 30 mins (estimate) it resets the clock function. It's annoying to adjust the time every single time you unplug the fryer. Thanks.

    • @ShellyWutke604
      @ShellyWutke604  3 роки тому +3

I use the bottom rack for air fry. I found the second rack held the food too close to the top and it was getting very crisp. I don't preheat the oven. It gets hot fast, so I just adjust the time I cook the food.
It does require tweaking but I just love air fry. I've never had a bad meal with it, and it's had to believe food can get that crispy without deep frying.

It has a defrost setting which is great because I keep my bread in the freezer, and a rack that you can use to heat rolls. The rack will even reheat cold pizza! It does get hotter after the first slices are toasted, so for subsequent slices you need to reduce the toasting time.

I saw your video and you mentioned that you had "proofed" (?) the dough. What settings do you use for this. Also, I heard you say that you have 6 kids, so I can't imagine how busy you must be. Having said that, I've owned many Cuisinart appliances and have never had this much trouble just trying to figure out the step by step and order in which to set up all the settings prior to actually cooking, baking, or air frying something. Do you have an instructional, step by step video on just acquainting oneself with how to use this unit? I have the same one. I called Cuisinart and on there website, they have multiple videos, but they're all recipes, not going through step by step on how to do the settings. I would not mind if you shared your bread recipe. Thank you and God bless you.

Hi, I shared the bread recipe in the video description. To proof in this toaster oven, you scroll down in the main menu until you get to proof then tap the big button to select it. It just maintains a low temperature so the bread has a warm place to rise.
I have four kids and a hobby farm, so definitely always busy. :)

DO NOT BUY. Our rotary switch broke after 1 year and now we are finding online reviews are full of similar problems with other owners. We have yet to hear back from the Cuisinart warranty department.

1800w motor? It should've been an 1800w heating element.

    It's Cuisinart, not cuisine art...just FYI. 😊

Air fry and convection are the very same. So yours is really a convection oven then they charge you for the air fry basket. Clean your oven please.

Clean my oven? I had just wiped it down before I filmed this. When you test appliances you have to cook a bunch of different types of food. How would I be able to give an honest opinion otherwise? The oven is going to look like its been used, which is has.
Air fry and convection aren't even close to the same thing. I have a full convection range that doesn't cook food the way this air fryer does.
Please do your research before commenting. I spent two weeks cooking with this appliance every day before I offered my opinion on it.

Shelly Wutke what are the difference ?

@@supercooled air fryers have smaller chambers and higher speed air circulation than a convection oven. The basket facilitates cooking underneath the food so it's evenly cooked. Even if you put an air fry basket in a convection oven, you won't get the same result. I've used my full convection oven to cook fries and they never turn out like this.

No, convection and air frying are 2 totally different cooking methods. I've had convection microwaves since 1981 when they first came out and none of those cook nearly as fast as air frying. Air frying is higher temps and higher fan speed. Air frying a steak is fantastic, never got as great results in a convection oven. Same for chicken, chops, everything else.
