Preach it Taira! John Taylor's bass guitar WAS the lead guitar in many of their songs. Andy Taylor was great in his own right, his haunting and beautiful guitar sound on this song alone is very distinctive. but the backbone of their songs was John Taylor. My FAVORITE bass player of all time... nobody is even close to him.

Looking back, it's amazing what an innovative/inventive and ground-breaking band they were. When there was a new DD video coming out, it was almost like a movie premiere! I really wish I could have seen them live around that time, they put on a hell of a show too.

And I can assure you DD weren't 'underrated', given that they shifted millions of records and spent at least half the decade in the charts (certainly in the UK, and presumably in a huge number of other countries). They happen not to have been my thing at the time - I was into post punk - but I didn't 'underrate' them, I could see they were great at what they did. I've noticed that for EVERY 80s video I've watched on UA-cam, people have commented that the band are the most underrated. By definition they can't ALL be the most underrated! It's getting boringly predictable that someone will say it, and is fundamentally meaningless because it's said so often.

I'm afraid the institution itself is grossly US-centric; nominating mostly US artists, and wherever US artists are nominated, artists of any other nationality will be overlooked. The fact that Kate Bush is still not in the R & R Hall of Fame tells me everything I need to know about it! Do try to stop thinking it matters or is somehow relevant. Nobody outside the US does.
My absolute FAVOURITE Duran Duran track. Perfectly encapsulates the sound of the early 80s.. it ‘s a credit to their talent that they were largely dismissed at the time, but, over time they have come to be respected and recognized for more than just the pop star pretty boys of the 80s to being recognized as true musicians and creative artists who are still creating to this day.

I just stumbled upon you and you are playing my youth. I don't know how many Duran Duran concerts I attended in the 80s. I have always been fond of Nick. My friends thought I was weird both for liking Nick, and initially for liking D2 - they were all fans within a year. They rubbed off onto my friends lol. And they are still rocking so well, putting out amazing music. The new stuff isn't like this, of course, because they matured as people and artists. I recommend everything they did, plus there were two splinter groups. John and Andy formed Power Station, Simon and Nick did Arcadia. Both put out amazing music worth checking out.

I've always loved this song and Duran Duran, there are great songs from them, I love Wild Boys and Reflex and I'm lucky to remember them lol. I can remember when my Sister & all of her friends were gathered in front of the TV to watch the World Premiere of this Video on MTV ! They kept announcing it for weeks and everyone was waiting in anticipation to see this Video & Song since I think it was their first release after the huge success of the "RIO" Album. Always loved this song & video.
The was the first song of my first ever live concert..great memories! Went with my sister Dec 83 Brighton/UK..dressed the same as that video with Black baggy "wet look" trousers and a blue shirt + a "wedge" haircut hanging over my eye - thought I was super cool!! :-D
Duran Duran set the bar for music videos. As they progressed, the videos became mini movies, were set in exotic locations. They were very much known for the visuals along with the music.

Duran already had lots of hits by the time they came out with this song, but this song totally cemented them as superstars and the biggest band in the world at that point in time. I recommend checking some live versions of some of the songs you've already reacted to (especially from the "As The Lights Go Down" concert video from their 1984 tour). I'd also like to recommend checking out the live performance of "Late Bar" (a B-side track) from the Storytellers special, and to also check out some of their newest tunes, particularly "Invisible" and "Anniversary".
John Taylor is one of the finest bass players around. Amazing he only picked up a bass a couple years before their first album came out. His syncopated bass lines are fire…..Also, Simon LeBon is an incredible lyricist. Amazing.

I HIGHLY recommend checking out DuranDuran spin-off group Arcadia. My favorite video is The Flame. In Duran style, it’s like a mini movie. So fun!

Their new stuff is just as good, in my opinion. Anniversary is a top tune, but Planet Earth, their first hit, will always be my favourite. John Taylor is indeed one of the best bassists out there.

I can remember when my Sister & all of her friends were gathered in front of the TV to watch the World Premiere of this Video on MTV ! They kept announcing it for weeks and everyone was waiting in anticipation to see this Video & Song since I think it was their first release after the huge success of the "RIO" Album. Always loved this song & video.
Andy Taylor's guitar work and use of filters is amazing. Always creates such a vibey energetic sound.
The was the first song of my first ever live concert..great memories! Went with my sister Dec 83 Brighton/UK..dressed the same as that video with Black baggy "wet look" trousers and a blue shirt + a "wedge" haircut hanging over my eye - thought I was super cool!! :-D
One of my favorite memories growing up was seeing them at the Hampton Coliseum in 1984. And no, I don't think I've ever heard a bad song from them.

Duran Duran set the bar for music videos. As they progressed, the videos became mini movies, were set in exotic locations. They were very much known for the visuals along with the music.

Duran already had lots of hits by the time they came out with this song, but this song totally cemented them as superstars and the biggest band in the world at that point in time. I recommend checking some live versions of some of the songs you've already reacted to (especially from the "As The Lights Go Down" concert video from their 1984 tour). I'd also like to recommend checking out the live performance of "Late Bar" (a B-side track) from the Storytellers special, and to also check out some of their newest tunes, particularly "Invisible" and "Anniversary".

John Taylor is one of the finest bass players around. Amazing he only picked up a bass a couple years before their first album came out. His syncopated bass lines are fire…..Also, Simon LeBon is an incredible lyricist. Amazing.
