Was 16 - heard it first with all my surfer friends - ICONIC. After Breakfast Club, Judd Nelson came in my McDonalds, I took his order. He was acting in a play next door at Burt Reynold’s Theater in Jupiter, Fl. Surreal times looking back now in 2023.

Ye at 1986 I had been a Joy Divison fan for year so when this EP came out of was blown of my feet of happines and the sound just spinn me around! The dance nights in clubs in Copenhagen and Berlin ...omg!!

The history behind this song is amazing. They literally assembled the synthetizers themselves. The bass line was borrowed from a western movie. Everything is epic.
@Barely Taupe well at the end of the 70's and beginning of the 80' Punk take some irreverent imagery from a lot of chaotic things as the Nazism. That doesn't mean that they were nazis, actually they are one of the most antifascist urban tribe ever.
If they were something close to nazi I've never let them come into my life as I'm anti-fascism, and JD&NO are two of my favourites bands ever! That is my view/opinion ...

oskarobit yeah. People have to be careful extrapolating meaning from names and titles. Like with the clash, “white riot” can be easily misinterpreted - but it’s basically saying poor whites should be in solidarity with poor blacks.

I was an abused teenager when this came out. The lyrics helped give me courage to recover from all that and leave home (at 15). I remember feeling, "Finally! Someone is calling out the abuser." Gave me courage to do the same. Thank you New Order ❤

When my Mom died, I was obsessed with New Order/Electronic. Very healing!
I remember playing it in the 80's when I was a DJ in the UK and it still gives me beautiful shivers up my spine, what a wonderful time and a garenteed floor filler!

Disco died in the early 80’s and this song brought it back. It also inspired House Music.
This song is 38 years old this year, and it still sounds fresh . The build up in the almost 2 minute intro gives me chills

The Brits definitely dominated the electronic dance music scene in the ‘80s. Their music still sounds so modern as it did back then. I was more into music coming out of the UK more than American music at the time. It never gets old. We also had amazing ‘80s bands from Canada, where I’m from. You should check out Platinum Blonde and also Spoons. So many great hits!
When i was 18 or so (1986), I had my first car (1982 VW Rabbit) and I had bought the extended version of Blue Monday on cassette tape. With an over powered Pioneer stereo that I had installed myself, I cruised Barrie ON (1 hour north of Toronto) blaring this song with the windows down. I was just finishing high school and didn't really know what I wanted to do with my life. New Order lead me to broaden my horizons and listen to other great groups such as Jimmy Somerville, the Bee Gees, The Smiths, Depeche Mode and the Cult among others...
Now at 54 years, I realize that great, danceable music has carried me through life with a religion all of it's own!

New Order was formed after Ian Curtis, the lead singer for Joy Division, killed himself to avoid a rapid decline into a horrible case of epilepsy. In fact, a few of their early songs, including 'Ceremony' were written by Curtis before his death. After his suicide, the remaining members formed new order and were later joined by Gillian Gilbert on keyboards. Which was a great addition IMO. The majority of their other songs don't have the hard hitting dance sound of Blue Monday but are more of a lighter, post-punk and new wave feel. If you like this track definitely check out 'Bizarre Love Triangle' but don't be afraid to also check out some of their lighter tracks. Some of my favorites include 'Your Silent Face', 'Age of Consent', 'Thieves Like Us', and 'Temptation'.

I would add that New Order's first album Movement was actually closer (pun intended) to Joy Division than other albums that came after it. New Order really started with "Power, Corruption & Lies". I would also call them a 90s band too with an alternative to Alternative and Grunge.
They were Warsaw before they were Joy Division.

This was arguably one of the most relevant tracks of all time. New Order visited NY in the mid 80's and latched on to the house music beat and came back to produce this track (amongst others). It helped create the EDM/House Music in Manchester in the 80's which led to the House Music scene in the late 80's/Early90' which made Manchester become the centre of the music world. The fact they owned the Hacienda (which was the most famous EDM/Dance club in the world) makes this tune an absolute classic.

Haha! You're wrong on so many levels.
1. This song predates house music, it was released in spring of 83. House emerged in Chicago and almost automatically in many underground clubs in the north of England, though not the Hacienda, in 85/86.
2. The story of Manchester, the Hacienda and house music is they turned up late to the party. It was when Acid took off around 89 that the Hacienda started to fill out.
3. Manchester become the centre of the music world? Only if you lived in a tiny world called Manchester and never left the city.
@@bertiew6771 Not arguing that House originated in Chicago (That's a given), but Manchester took it to a different level because the US wasn't ready for it and the Europe was.
Truth is I headed north to Blackburn around 1990 for the illegal raves and most of the early 90's driving south to clubs in Stoke (Shelleys Entropy and Club Kinetic) even though I lived in Manchester. The number of times I was out in Manchester and cars pulled over, with accents from all over the UK, to ask for directions to the Hacienda was countless. It was a very special place and I feel grateful to have frequented it on many occasions. It woudn't have been what it was if New Order hadn't experienced the Chicago vibe in NY. I'm not on her to fall out Bertie, I respect your opinion and you are right about Acid House.

Again I don't see the link between Blue Monday and Chicago house, completely different times. If there is a US link it would be places like the Paradise Garage in NY with DJs like Larry Levan and Frankie Knuckles.

I was 16 in 1990 when I went to Blackburn for the first time in 1990 and 17 in 1991 when I went to my first night in Shelleys in Stoke. I just watched a few videos that suggested New Order's visit to NY in the mid 80's brought back a beat (Blue Monday) that assisted many house artists. Whatever, they were good times and we both got to enjoy a special scene.
Ironically I moved to Blackburn in 1992 after signing for the Ice Hockey team and ended up spending 20 years in the town before moving back to Altrincham. I also married a Blackburn lass. The scene was so special I ended up sacrificing my sporting career but it was worth it.

Pretty simple: the bar for good music was set higher and it takes something like 'Blue Monday' to not only get noticed, but to push the envelope.
"Blue Monday" is an absolutely perfect song. I wish I could hear it for the first time all over again, but watching this guy having that experience is a pretty damn good substitute. :)

When this record came out I owned multiple Kraftwerk records, but when I heard this, it was like a new sound within the total body of electronic music.

While I agree that Kraftwerk inspired nearly everyone in the synthpop/synth new music movement, I have to give credit to New Order for Blue Monday. A lot of synth acts at the time were futurists that were trying to sound like robots or some kind of futurist sound. New Order pioneered adding a rock aggressiveness to the synth sound at the time. I don't think we can take that away from them. The only other synthpop song that sounded as "bangin'" at the time was Yazoo's "Don't Go". I think we can live in a world where we can give both Kraftwerk and New Order their respect for their contributions to electronic music.

i was raised in the heartland of the US & i have NEVER heard anything remotely like Joy Division or New Order in any public area. EVER. not radio, not clubs, not parties. it was considered "underground" there. i was a weirdo outcast who happened to hear music through friends who came from big cities. (fortunately, cuz i'm a big ol' fan of both JD & NO! and exposure to punk music changed my whole life.) i did once hear it on the sound system before a punk show i went to in chicago.

Joy Division became New Order after the lead singer Ian Curtis committed suicide. They added other members but all the remaining JD members became NO.👍👍 The JD guitarist became the lead singer of NO.

@@SeanConway99 I absolutely second that. He was the only guy who played the bass as if it was a guitar. And the story to the iconic line in Blue Monday is that he "stole" it from Ennio Morricone, it's from the soundtrack of "For a few dollars more".
New Order were so ahead of their time. Not only in music, but in their videos, the cover of their álbuns, the partnership with DJs from the England scene. I hear Blue Monday and The Perfect Kiss (another masterpiece) every day
Memories of me playing this full blast in my room way back in the early 80's, playing it so loud i couldn't even hear my mum and dad and neighbours screaming at me to turn it down...ah them were the days.

This was THE club song in the 80s. Definitive. Only available on 12" for years, so about the best-selling 12" in UK history.
It was on most versions of Power, Corruption and Lies. They did lose money on every sale due to the floppy disc sleeve which cost more to make than they made from the album.

The song came out in 1983 and the effort that went into producing this song was pretty much a first at the time. They actually programmed the song in binary code to sequence it on machine they built. Go read about it it's pretty amazing. There's also a pretty good documentary about it.
And apparently there was no persistent storage media for their sequencer, meaning that it had to be programmed manually, entering bytes by hand off of a giant strip of paper laid out on the floor.
This song is complete. It’s complete music. It needs nothing more, because it has everything and is missing nothing. It’s the 80s version of Spectre’s Wall of Sound.

I remember exactly where I was and with who when I first heard this song. I played it non stop. It was like a drug. I couldn't get enough. I feel so lucky to have been a teen during these years. One of my favourite memories from the 80's.
That intro was the perfect length for me to hear from far away and make my way to the dancefloor, via the bar, by the time the lyrics start

They REALLY gave that Oberheim DMX drum machine a serious workout with this song! New Order was pure musical talent (as was joy division) but in another way. Back when this song came out, making music like this was DIFFICULT as all hell. I have used an Oberheim DMX (I used to own one in fact) and you basically have to be a musical AND a computer genius to operate it deftly.
This song is part of the reason that the 80s sounds like the 80s.
Regardless of what genre of music is your thing, be it Techno, Trance, Progressive House/House, whatever..., everyone lands at this track at some stage

Really freaky psychedelic old stuff is Einsturzende Neubauten with a song called " Futter Meinem Ego" , not many like it, it is one of those songs that you hate or totally love. Enjoy!

My mom told me she used to go to the club all the time during the 80s and this was THE dance song. Now I just hear it on her iPod during trips or when I play it for my own listening. The band didn't split. They just reformed, asked Gillian to play with them as she was with another band The Inadequates, that practiced in the same area as Joy Division

One of my favourite songs ever - played at my wedding as the next party dance after I had danced with my wife to our wedding song. A complete contrast to the slow number we danced to straight after and the floor was filled with happy dancers! Classic tune - love it. :)

Kraftwerk, massively sampled on early hip hop tracks. It's funny looking back at the progression/transgression of music.
@@clew5687 Afrika Bambata used samples for his first tracks which define hip hop in the 80st. But kraftwerk also influences electric music like underground resistance with their Detroit techno.

My son and daughter both stream it regularly on Spotify after I introduced then to New Order - me I'm old School although I have it on my phone I crank up the record player and still play the 12" vinyl original.

You also need to hear Depeche Mode another great 80s British band.
This used to play at the underground dance clubs in Chicago. I danced until I couldn't. Used to call this genre of music new wave, I believe.

From uk 🇬🇧 here. We used to call it 'Indie'. Not your mainstream pop culture of the 80s and 90s. Plenty of British artists who became really big back then used to do the Colleges and Universities.
@@anaseijas3923 'Indie music' were bands that weren't part of the big labels at the time and were independently produced by smaller labels. Then it progressed into New Wave. But so many categories, new romantics, new wave etc. As you said a pop/punk collaboration was a nuance of the Underground Indie scene.

JayveeTV thanks for exploring 80's music. I love when I see younger people open their minds to the beauty of this decades music - which was vast. I was a teenager in the 80's Joy Division/New Order is my favorite band. If you have a chance to see them, do it. They are still amazing to see live.
It’s hard to underestimate the impact of Blue Monday, it was the biggest selling 12” single of all time. In many ways it was the prototype for ‘dance music’ and the rave and acid house scene in the UK. New Order owned a club in Manchester called The Hacienda and many late 80s and early 90s iconic bands either directly or indirectly sprang out of that scene including The Happy Monday’s, The Charlatans, The Stone Roses, Inspiral Carpets (side note: Noel Gallagher was their drum tech) The Smiths and many more...

Im a 59 year old dude but people say I look 45 and maybe its because this was all the great music we used to dance with in the 80's and I was constantly dancing at the clubs with my girlfriend at the time. Listening to this music again now I just had to jump up and start dancing again, yup, lol, still have the old old moves, God I miss the 80's. Thanks for keeping us young. There's an excellent podcast "Transmission, the Definitive Story of Joy Division and New Order." They have an entire episode dedicated to how the song was made. Far more cumbersome to make back then than today.

This song was so HUGE back in the day, its an absolute classic track, it's way ahead of its time, it still kicks ass today
back in the 80's i was influenced by electronic music of Art of Noise and such. my uncle had a synthesizer and an RX-5 drum machine we both used to tinker about with, this song was one of the first i learned, looking back and not realising how ahead we actually were when it came to electronic music. sadly things went other ways and we never took the music further than inside our house.it's funny how you can look back at life and see points that could of taken you on different paths in life.

New Order is the surviving members of Joy Division. Bernard Sumner took over on lead vocals after Ian Curtis's suicide. This was longer because it was an extended 'Club Mix' so yeah, you often got lots of crazy studio tricks on club mixes. Try "True Faith" or "Bizarre Love Triangle" next. Thanks.
