Excellent as always…. Mac is a seriously talented player and with Ian’s insight and explanations overlaying this, it makes for a quality piece of footage. Thank you 👏
Mac is not just a creative shot maker, he is an artist. Really impressive to see. With Ian’s scientific overlay and insight, this is a brilliant combination of an artist working with an engineer. Keep these coming. Very informative and entertaining. 🙌🙌👍👍🙏🙏☝️☝️💯💯
This is 100% my issue I hit spinny drivers! I noticed Mac sets his driver way behind the ball and I think I'm going to try this. I'm stuck between moving my ball further up in my stance to promote an upward strike but it also seems to bring in more of a pull/deloft through impact feel. Makes sense the bottom of your swing should be before you get to the ball.
This video is super helpful. Trying to get away from a draw because when it’s off, it’s way off. Feels like once the hook comes up it is super hard to get rid of on the course in the same day. Especially when you’re in a 9 hole league and only pulling the driver out 4 to 5 times a round. The explanation of the feels Mac uses is super helpful. Feels like that’s really applicable.
So glad I discovered Mac. Not as talented as him (not even close) but I flirt with single digit handicap depending on how much I am playing, however very similar in terms of style. When I am in trouble I can sling balls left (I’m righty), I know how to shot shape, just not consistent with it yet. I too have a very high hands finish. However I am a Former baseball player, with tour average+ swing speeds. I too used to be a big drawer with my driver. During COVID didn’t get to play much and then all of a sudden, I was a fader. As soon as I heard Mac say his miss was a “block cut” I was like wow. Been fighting that for all of 2022. This video was great. My best rounds are when I hit a big soft fade, and my worst are when I fight it. Why not just play it? Great video. Going to put this to work.
Timely video. The draw/bomb drive has always killed me but i kept going back to it.......not anymore. I've been doing the exact set-up Mac professes and so far so good. No dive bombs low and left. Thanks Ian/TXG.
nice one thanks. explains why i once managed to hit a par 4 green. the stars aligned - well face, path and attack angle anyway. Dr Kwon would certainly not be saying that backswing is too peaceful. No wonder Mac is hitting bombs.
This video is extremely informative! It’s about effective effort. 100 mph ball speed fade equals 300 yards! This epic information for me. This video maybe a huge help for the students that I help out too!!! Thanks a million!
This changes everything in my approach to hitting a driver! Even though this is my natural shot shape and I can see most pros using this push/fade swing, I was convinced I couldn't swing fast enough to get the distance to overcome the sidespin, therefore trying to force a draw swing path. Little did I know working harder at squaring club face, changing AOA, and centering club contact but leaving my swing the same could get me there. Another keeper in Bookmarks!!! My TXG Bookmark library has been increasing significantly recently!!!😂
What should be a feel through the ball hitting up and delofting the face? Should one release the clubhead? Or hold the shaft lean? Which is the right feel to put into your swing?
I changed to the low spin power fade with driver 12 months ago and it was the best thing I've done in terms of accuracy and consistency and, I haven't given up much in distance.
My natural shape is a fade but because I lose distance and so I think I have to try and hit a draw, I’m 66 now and watching this really informative lesson i hope to grasp the face, path and spin aspect of the shot. Big thanks for everything you provide 👍
One of the greatest investments in my game I've ever made was to buy one of those $600 launch monitors and hitting into a net in my garage. You will see the numbers and it will shock you seeing the distance difference between a solid hit and a poor hit. Smash factor is critical...and you learn to hit will enough backspin to actually stop a ball on the green...if you can afford it, buy one....then go to someone like Ian for a proper fitting and you're golden. You will be amazed at the improvement if you spend a week just hitting one club...amazing.
Thanks for the head's up, Ian. Watching my numbers, I was neglecting that angle of attack for the driver which might explain my consistent backspin numbers around 3200 with an elevation of 19 degrees! Strike almost centre, swing speed 95 mph and carry around 235, I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't go further. My next session will be all about angle of attack. :)
Wow that's is exactly it, I was a fader of the ball hit absolutely tons of fairways but short on distance, I changed my swing and moved to a draw shape gained 25 yards but misses kept appearing as blocks and was not comfortable with the swing...... Will be changing back to my fade swing and taking some of these tips with me
Great video lads. Looks like Mac is getting more comfortable and offering more insight. It was very helpful to hear some of his comments on why he sets up the way he does so his hips don’t get stuck and his visual path of swinging towards his lead foot. That was really cool. I would not have thought of that.
Awesome content! Like seeing things at regular human speed. Wondering more on the set up that allows Mac to get to that kind of attack angle, ball position, tee height, spine tilt?
all of the above, get on a launch monitor that can track AoA and play with it, its quite easy to hit +7* and ive found that exaggerating and going after huge AoA numbers has translated to me averaging +5-6* on course leading to a much better game off the tee
Great vid Guys👍 For most of my golfing journey, I have lived in the low heel of my Driver face. But working with a new Coach we have moved my strike pattern into the high toe area. We are now working on moving the strike a little nearer to the centre, when I manage it the feel & sound of the strike is amazing! I'm too old to be hitting bombs, but turning 200yard drives into 220yard drives is a result for me👍
Always a solid reminder with Mac that you are in Canada! LOL With oot him I sometimes forget. Would be great to see you get "oot and aboot" with him for an on course vlog to watch first hand how it all translates to the course for him.
This is great and should be pressed home much more often , ive struggled and struggled for years to get the right to left shot that my body just will not do . Ive given up and just gone with allowing a full power swing and working on killing the spin and its been a pleasure , not to mention the added yards and accuracy 👍. The graphics are a little misleading , you have it set at face to path and it shows open when really face to target is closed - i think an important ingredient here - the ball past the toe position you get when this open aids a closed face with an upward strike ( to target) With that in mind i actually find im aiming left side to get a fade that brings the ball back to centre . Ive found and it may just be me that a lighter shaft has helped my confidence through impact with this my natural path .
Always played the straight shot. With mostly good results. Watched this video and ripped 100mph/ 250y carry slight cuts on the DR consistently with confidence. And easier on my lower back. I’ll owe you guys some business - will book a fitting during our Michigan/ Ontario road trip this summer.
I was a range addict last year spraying driver all over the place. Joined Douglaston this year (one of the tightest golf course in Scotland), where that power fade is crucial and had to learn how to do this on the course. For instance the first hole is 263 off the yellows. But sweeps off to the right round the high pine trees. I can green it now using this technique. Same with the second hole. It's 324 off the yellow, but there's a massive fir tree on the centre of the fairway about 200 out, so you need to bend it round the tree. With no options, you need to do what your brain wants. Skinniest part of the tree (top) and go round it. So it's a power fade, which is amazing when you pull it off.
Tried the power fade today at the range, so easy and consistent! Thank you guys for the video and will use it on the course on Saturday and in my first competition of the year on Sunday 🚀 Have a nice one, cheers from Sweden
I swing just above 100 mph on average so I normally cruise in the mid-high 140s. My stock shot is a draw, tends to launch at 12-13/2100/ 4.5 up/3.5 i/o that goes 255 carry 270-275 total. Over the past year I've worked on what I call my bullet cut. I tee it up a touch lower, focus on a full turn back and firing hard left through contact. The result is 11/2300/2.5 up/.5 i/o that carries about 240 but rolls out to 275 or further. Def a nice one to have when you need good distance down a tight hole.
Nothing against RB and Mike but the way Mac hits the ball really is the “Tour Experience” of this channel. Love to come out here for the pure data and pure shots with Ian’s nuggets of knowledge that really help me out when I’m hitting on my simulator setup
this makes so much sense. I have a ballspeed of 155-160mph and 2 years ago could fly the ball 270yds but most of the time it was 245-255yds. I could never work out why as I was 2 degrees up but couldnt get spin below 3000rpm
You guys should do a breakdown video of Phil’s comment that’s circulating on every social media platform. I.e., “wedge in the morning goes 120.. ball warms up, grain into you.. ball sitting up on grass or a tee, the CG is below ball, goes farther.” Etc etc.
Would love to see and Above the head view of Mac looking down, to see how open he really is (or isn’t) tough to see what “open” looks like, to see if I’m open enough or not.
I'm the shortest in my 4-6 guys I pay regurlay with 5'4, they are 5'7 to 6 fotot, I have always had a natural fade and I almost always out drive my group by 20+ yards, but it doesnt matter if I cant beat them, they always are better at scoring than I am, but it does feel good to smash the ball.
Top video as always guys. Time to get disciplined and work at slower speeds on the range. Are there any ways to monitor this if we don’t have access to a launch monitor ?
ty for this I've always been a chandelle player but never knew how I did it and would over cut, worked on drawing the ball but ugh those snap hooks suck, know I know how to use the comfortable swing and keep it long and straight!!!ball position still at left heel (you know)
I know this is an older video, but so good. Curious what his driver/hosel/weights setup is. I always played a natural fade/slice but the spin would kill me especially in the wind. I have an 8* Callaway TD set in the draw setting. Trying to play a soft draw. Would love to go back to a fade with low spin and swing away. 110-115 SS at 40 years old. Any advice for weight front or back and hosel setting. Probably need to just go play with it or set up a session but just curious. Thanks a lot.
Great video, this is exactly my problem, just went through a recent fitting with 100 mph swings -1 attack angle and 3400 spin which is leaving a lot of yardage on the table!
What loft is he driver set to? I seem to have developed a fade with driver recently playing draws with irons etc so this is right up my street! Will have to have a look at doing something similar 😀 Mac is a baller!!
What is your ball position for these power fades?? Also what is your tee height? Which number birtee do you recommend for this type of driver power fade? Thank you.
Great content. As many have said, my miss is that 220yd slice where I try to hit it hard, but hit down on it. I've always tried to get an upward angle of attack with a draw, but can't get the draw everytime. Perhaps I need to play with a more natural fade, but hitting up on it.
I'm confused by the software showing a right handed golfer yet Mac is a lefty. When I'm trying to figure out what's going on, do I need to reverse the path in/out and closed/open to see what Mac is actually doing?
I know the low tee safety slice. I used to play a Cobra ZL with a three wood length shaft, teed it low (white tee) and played a squeeze cut and found fairways. But it gave up 20-30 yards. Swing speed in and around 98-102mph but feel I am still leaving yardage on the table.
Late to the party here, but a question for you - When I play the low-spin fade off the tee (upward AoA, hold off the release, etc.), I tend to start push-fading my irons (natural shot shape is a draw) so it becomes an either/or proposition: I can hit good drivers or good irons, but seemingly not both. The alternative to preserve my iron swing is my natural driver swing path (I/O, more neutral AoA, slightly closed face) which leads to low-launching, super low-spinning hooks that are basically unplayable. Any advice? I am trying to keep my basic swing the same throughout the bag rather than effectively using two different swings (driver and everything else).
Can GC Quad not having the right settings give a false reading on spin-rates and thus throw off yardage/distance? Quad was showing that he was hitting a draw I assume it was still thought a righty was swinging.
Very impressive....Mac is a beast. That said, Ian, it is not Mac's speed and deliver, it is HIS style of hitting a ball...hence his OVERALL swing. Sure I see the "recipe" but my physical structure and my bodies ability to "swing" like he does with his arms, body and ground work, I would need to up my insurance policy because I would need major medical treatment after a week of swinging like he does.....if you get my meaning :P In fact, Ian I challenge you do attempt what he is doing....batter up!
Would love to be a fly on the wall for a conversation between him and bubba. They accomplish very similar things but I’m sure their feel is very different

is it just the angle or is the ball further forward than typically reccomended?
Late to the party here, but a question for you - When I play the low-spin fade off the tee (upward AoA, hold off the release, etc.), I tend to start push-fading my irons (natural shot shape is a draw) so it becomes an either/or proposition: I can hit good drivers or good irons, but seemingly not both. I do think I spin it too high even when hitting up on the ball. Not sure how to get that spin loft down… Any ideas, peanut gallery?
Would love to be a fly on the wall for a conversation between him and bubba. They accomplish very similar things but I’m sure their feel is very different
Seems similar to controlled fade that Haney talks about in his book about Tiger.
Would you tee the ball low and still hit up on it 7 degrees?
Can we have Mac's Driver Head head loft and what it is set to? Thanks
How would one be able to get in touch with Mac to consider some lessons?
