Feels like they left out a section or something, as that’s the reason for the addition of the external clock generator: The devices with sensitive timing are driven off of it instead of the CPU BCLK, bypassing that instability.
EDIT: Apparently in recent generations they’ve reverted the change where they coupled these!

  • @siliconalleyelectronics187

It's important to note that the Renesas chip CAN cost that much. This is because the chip is a PCIe gen 5 controller which are actually fairly expensive on their own but adding the chip also means you'll be adding gen 5 lanes as well (which they do). Meeting the additional signaling requirements adds more cost to the board as well meaning anything with this chip (or gen 5 in general) will be more expensive. This is why the Max happens to be one of the most expensive B660 boards, pretty comparable to entry-level Z690 boards.
With their new lab, I would like to see testing on non-K CPUs to test the longevity and viability of overclocking those units. Intel is "supposed" to be binning those units because of instability from overclocking the silicon and it would be interesting to see the variance in potential clock speeds relative to required voltages for non-K CPUs and if Intel's judgements on their quality is justified. I would also not be surprised if Intel were to take steps to void warranties on overclocked non-K CPUs as they've theoretically priced the products relative to an expected life span of the silicon which is compromised when operating outside of the original set parameters.

@@olioxx Yes, that's expensive for motherboard components, $10 is 5% of the final product's retail price and it's just one part out of hundreds. Furthermore, you also need a redesign of the PCB, additional components to support the IC, an SMT mounted PCIe slot and higher quality substrate and material to support gen 5 signal standards. The original product (non max) carried an MSRP of $180 at launch, a year later and all this extra stuff you'll likely be seeing them around $210 which makes sense.

Also when you buy the K series at least you know it's binned to hit high speeds, the same can't be said of the lower end chips. As the video says, overclocking like the old days (20-25 years ago) like with what you could get with the original Celerons, Bartons, and early P4 chips is pretty much dead. I overclocked everything up until a few years ago when I abandoned it due to stability issues that always crept in after some amount of time, even on a "rock solid" mild overclock. The chips are already doing it from the factory by boosting to higher clocks when needed, and I found I much preferred a truly stable system to one that might be a couple percent faster.
Besides, CPUs have much longer legs these days, and they're less critical to good performance than they were back then.

The 300A I alluded to in my original post could frequently go from 300 to 450mhz (a 50% overclock!) on stock voltage and the stock cooler with what I think was a 40 or 60mm fan. I had one of those, and an i5 2500k. Both of them could handle an overclock with gusto. I got my i5 to 4.98GHz stable and the i7 was *almost* stable at double its factory speed (I forget the actual number). Both of them still work today after being overclocked daily for nearly a decade. They're built like tanks - I recently upgraded and put the i5 into the PC I'm building for my girlfriend to play various sim games (not *the* sims - simulation games like rimworld etc). Sure, it'll splutter and falter when things start getting super complicated but it'll outperform anything that most laptops can manage, and compare favorably to relatively recent (3-4ish year old) mid-range processors in single core tasks like many games are.

Budget overclocking is a very teenager thing to do, yeah. When you have time and energy but not money. I got up to some crazy builds when I was 16, I had a 400mm side panel fan in my case because why the hell not it's 2007, just to try and improve the cooling a little and keep my video card under 120°C. It crashed at 125.
These days I just buy good components and run them stock. Zero worries. Maybe 200 bucks more for the whole system which is nothing, but adequate cooling and good components are worth it to me now. When I was 16, 200 bucks might be my entire budget for the yearly computer upgrade! Of course I will tinker with it for two weeks until it has the performance I want at the price I can afford!!

On the down side, you're missing bug fixes, stability improvements and most importantly, SECURITY FIXES. Sometimes the lower chips like P3 333mhz were actually capable of running 500mhz solid, while another unit of the same model would crash at 366mhz. Luck of the draw from the manufacturing plant; they were all based on the same design, get tested, then add a limiter based on the test. There were other differences in the series though, and the really good ones with higher L2 & L3 didn't come in a lower clock speed.

Wasn't the multiplier always locked for a long time now?
I got into PC building in the CORE 2 days when the Q6600 was the golden budget chip. The CPU Multiplier was locked at 9X but people were able to overclock by increasing the FSB. The QX chips had the unlocked multiplier and was way easier to overclock.

Strange... I never over clocked my PC and always bought intel since around 1995. I would purchase mid to high mid hardware and typically would upgrade every 5 years. In recent years the upgrades are slower as it appears that gaming tech has slowed. So the last full upgrade was about 2012 or maybe a little sooner. GPU upgrade was more recent, 2019, and still mid to mid high at the time. I'll probably do a CPU and motherboard upgrade in the near future. I never really had an issue with Intel. It was actually more stable than AMD. First time trying AMD around the early 2000s and my pc would just crash. Instantly went back to intel and there were zero issues.

I love how I've gotten so use to Linus' videos that I can see the sponsor segway before it appears.

My first overclocking experience was BCLK overclocking my Intel Pentium HT 3,2 GHz, a single core, hyperthreading CPU. A powerhouse back in its days. (It was high-end, because it had hyperthreading!)
3,76 GHz was the most I could manage with the stock cooler and 8 year old thermal paste.
I still have the CPU, my first one, though the computer is long gone.
