    I actually like this Edge ST. It's not perfect, but with enthusiasts in mind I think it's one of the most well-rounded crossovers on the market. It pretty much does it all and makes little to no compromises with its performance, while still being fun in a "you just got smoked by a Ford Edge" way. It probably should be called the Edge Sport, ST-Line, or Edge SHO, but whatever. If you don't want to shell out $40-45k for one wait a few years, throw a tune on it, and decimate all at race wars.

    Great review. It's nice to see 1) A UA-camr whom looks at the car in the perspective of what it's intended to be 2) A UA-camr that actually knows how to set a car up in a corner then flow through it. As an ex NASA track driving instructor used to 1.0g + cornering I'm thoroughly impressed at how much I can get away with in the corners in my Edge ST.
    You can feel the torque vectoring erase understeer on heavy right footed corner exits and that's pretty darn cool to do in a 4200 lbs crossover. BTW, you're one of 2 UA-cam reviewers I know of who's even mentioned feeling the torque vectoring effects. Pretty much all the others except the guy who took it to a track day limit their "Sporty" driving to flooring it for about 3 secs in a straight line.
    I got this car to replace our beloved but aging Saab 9-3 2.0 T Sport Combi wagon and could not find a wagon I liked to replace it. This is as close as I got to car like balanced handling / responses and lack of rolly polly ride in a quiet and comfortable road trip vehicle for my family of 4. With end of the year deals I also got just under $10K off the sticker + 0 % financing making my near 50K sticker priced car less than $40K. All and all a great deal for a car that's more fun than any SUV / Crossover stickering for less than $65K on the market today.

    Currently have a 16 Edge Sport. Just drove today 700 km from Ontario to Mont Tremblant in Quebec. This vehicle is practical and can carry four people and luggage with comfort for all. Has a suite of convenience and safety features galore. The Sync 3 works extremely well with voice prompts so you don’t need to fiddle with controls. More than enough power to pass in any situation safely. Is excellent when fitted with winter tires in adverse weather conditions. It is not quite up to European fit and finishes but most North American products have similar shortcomings.
    It’s a sporty SUV and the V6 is a great power plant where most offerings come with 4cylinders now.
    It’s not cheap but haggle on the price, buy a demo or wait a year or so to buy used with some warranty. A Macan S is a wonderful machine but will come in at 20K more with equivalent options.

      The edge sport is a good vehicle no doubt✅ That said the Food EDGE ST is FAR SUPERIOR in EVERY WAY

    We bought a new 2019 edge st in the spring of 2020 and my wife and I love the car. This car is excellent when entering the freeway, stops quickly, and goes from 65 to 80 in the snap of a finger. The car responds!
    Since I am not a car enthusiast, I can't get into the nuance of shift points and stuff like that, but my sons, who are drivers liked this car a lot.
    One of the things I like about the 2019 is that the monitor is smaller. If I want to look at a monitor, I will stop and use a pad or laptop.

    Thanks so much for such an open minded unbiased review on the ST. Soooo much hate, so it was nice to hear a sensible review that didn't really try to compare a crossover to a car. Some folks need or want a crossover that moves and handles well, and this is it. Keep up the great work!

    To all those out there who buy based on magazine articles, I'm telling you don't. I just test drove one and to the idiots who say the sport is quicker I say they're foolish. The ST has much more torque down low, it handles better and actually has a better ride. As far as price goes the leftover Sport they had retailed for high 48k and the ST was low 49k. I was actually quoted 42k which I thought was fabulous. The biggest surprise to me was how good the ride actually was. Probably will be my next vehicle.

    I looked at a lot of different things in detail before I got one of these ($43k fully loaded). After a month with it, I have no regrets. Apart from the base Stelvio, which is way smaller and less comfortable, I found nothing in its price range that can out-perform it.. The RDX A-Spec and new Blazer RS have nothing on it. It’s a good car. Sure, in its price range you can get something this size with nicer fit and finish, but you you won’t have as much fun it.

    I bought one and it give a smile on my face each time I drive it! It feel solid and I i let it on Sport mode and I do not use the paddles shifters and it works great! I had a 2016 Sport and you feel the differences right away! Better acceleration, suspension, handling and adherence. And no problems with the new transmission, it work perfectly! And better fuel consumption. No vibrations from the hood. The cabin is very quiet. And by the way in my point of you it is really worthy of the ST badge! No matter what others may think!

      It 100% should not have an ST badge. It's the same type of shit that Mitsubishi pulled when they brought the Eclipse name back for their new garbage crossover, just on a much shorter time scale. Before this hunk of shit, the ST badge meant small and fun hot hatchbacks paired with a manual transmission. But Ford decided to remove those from America because people are obsessed with giant crossovers here, so this Edge feels like a slap in the face to us with good STs. Oh well, Ford is now dead to me.

    I own a '17 Focus ST and I probably wouldn't mind the ST badge on this Edge if Ford still came out with the Focus and Fiesta ST's but since those vehicles won't be coming to the States anymore, I feel like the badge is kind of being diluted by "loosely" applying it to vehicles that really have no business being specialized as "performance" oriented. Yeah sure, the Edge ST is fast but it's still a heavy, bloated people hauler that's built for comfort and convenience, not a raucous, superb handling, zippy hatchback that's made to handle roads and tracks with aplomb. Yet Ford wants to convince you that the Edge ST (and the upcoming Explorer ST - really?) is the next generation of performance and handling, which is probably no different than the Edge Sport.
    I'll still keep my Focus ST. I can haul my family and all our stuff when needed but when I'm by myself, I can hit the back roads with plenty of performance AND handling and have way more fun than doing that than in a ST pretender. I don't hate the Edge ST. I just don't think it deserves that badge.

      In sport mode it either skips 2nd or it is unnoticeable. In drive it will sometimes buck between 2 and 3 at very light throttle for a moment before making up its mind. At moderate to heavy throttle I have never noticed any concerns. After 1000miles I noticed higher boost even with 87 octane. Switched to 89 and shift issues decreased. Going to go 93 next fill and see if the 2/3 shift smoothes out more.

      ... It's heavy, feels heavy, has an isolated sense to it, the full leather seats will be slippery with little bolstering (the alcatara middle might help reduce the slipperyness); and I believe Ford dorked up the transmission by going cheap. [see the review by savagegeese]

    • @rhydynamic8306
      @rhydynamic8306 5 років тому

      K03sport+ I believe some people were complaining that the bolsters were too much for some reason, but it’s an SUV.. So handling isn’t on par but it’s pretty good for the SUV segment, the Macan handles fairly better.. But that’s a compact SUV, this is a midsize SUV and has more weight than the Macan. I do agree on the transmission, 2nd and 3rd are pretty much just the same, so it’s technically still a ‘6 Speed’. But I don’t find the seats slippery, I test drove one of these ST’s in town took it through some corners and went up an on ramp at speed, my butt doesn’t really slip from the seat. Maybe it’s just the kind of pants people where that makes the leather so slippery for them.

    Actually, I believe this is a slap in the face of car enthusiasts. Ford takes away ST/RS cars from the US, then sticks ST badges on a bloated SUV to ease the pain. So much wrong with this car and then there's the price. Should we expect an Escape ST (or RS) or an EcoSport ST (help us all) to fill the void in Ford's street performance segment. Mustangs are cool, but not for everyone...neither are CUVs /SUVs.

    • @thedriver5462
      @thedriver5462 5 років тому

      I know but companies who usually sell a lot of their cars to rental agencies tend to make cheap interiors to save some money and make more profit.(Toyota is good example ). My wife had 2013 Taurus and it is very similar in design to new Edge and they even share a lot of interior parts, switches etc. I am not bashing Ford here but 6 years later they shouldn't put so similar interior in their 50k performance CUV. Other issue is strange disgusting smell of interior materials. Both Fords we had (Taurus and Mustang) had that issue and they start to smell bad only after 4-5 months of ownership. Currently we have CX5 that is 2 years old and interior is good as new.

Their US marketing team obviously doesn't understand what that badge is supposed to be marketed toward. Savage Geese said it best, "Thanks but no thanks". The only people who would defend this are Ford loyalists who'd buy anything they put their logo on. For a stupid box, it doesn't even justify its existence over their cheaper premium trims. Put an Edge ST up against any AMG or M offering...yeah, exactly. It's a dumb comparison because this thing is slower, bland looking, outdated, and a terrible value for the money spent. AMG or M might cost a good bit more, but you actually get something for that. At $35k this would maybe appeal to more, but Focus STs were $23-24k and often discounted from that. What genius at Ford thought to replace their previous more value conscious car with an overpriced one that most of those buyers can't afford and won't spend?
    The cross section of buyers who'd even care about what this thing is trying to do and those who'd be willing to pay it is so small as to have not even been worth the lazy effort Ford put in throwing some ST badges on an Edge Sport and shoehorning in extra gears lazily into an existing transmission so they could say it had more speeds. That's some '50s-60s era lazy cost cutting engineering.
