What feature would you add to the Edge to make it worthy of the Ford Performance nameplate?

Driving Sports TV real exhaust note and DCT (mustang) in Edge. $50,000 is way 2 much for this lack of performance..

So I would suggest air bag suspension option to maximize comfort with large rims. suggest slightly wider tires. lower center of gravity by shaving some weight or lowering heavy bits, even if only by a few mm. suggest switchable beefy exhaust option as well. Macan has these and you can get a used one with 20k miles for 50k. And shave 5k off this trim base. As this is fitted for 50k I don't know how well this is going to sell. Lots of competition at this price point.

It's embarrassing what ford did with the exhaust sound. What were they thinking? 👎

    • @BRGT350
      @BRGT350 5 років тому +2

There isn't any feature that would make it suitable for a ST nameplate. The Edge ST should have been kept the Sport name and not used the ST nameplate. I drove one last month and it did not have summer tires, but rather all-seasons. I also found the suspension terribly soft for a ST product. Of course, I find the Focus RS in track mode to be a decent ride.

Yep - too much coffee for you. As a Raptor and Edge ST owner, the engine sounds are very similar. The ST performance is great - super fun to drive - very happy with power/handling and zero warranty claims. Really nice job by Ford.

I got a low mileage, fully loaded (401A package) for under $35k and I think at that price it's worth it and makes more sense. I actually enjoy it a bit more than the Audi A5 SB (2018) that I also have, even though the 0-60 is clearly superior on my Prestige-trim car.

The Edge (or Endura as it was called here) didn't even last 2 years on the Australian market. The first problem was Ford Aust. decided to remove the 2.7L petrol engine and replace it with a gutless 2L turbo Diesel. Then they decided to out price it by putting a ridiculously high price tag on it. So much so that you could by a much bigger and better Ford Everest 4x4 cheaper than you could by the endura. Bit of a shame really because it looks like a nice SUV and these newer overseas models look so much better than what we ended up with. There are so many of them for sale on the 2nd hand market but no one wants them.

It's pretty obvious most of the comments posted are from folks that have never driven an Edge ST. I own one and can say that this vehicle is awesome. You folks that say you'd buy some other type SUV, go ahead and us ST owners will laugh every time we blow by you. It won't be fake exhaust you hear when we blow by you.

Too bad you didn't Double click the ESC button, this puts the AWD in to Advancetrac Sport mode. You would have noticed a big difference. If you are going to do a review, know the secrets.

Is the RDX better than the Edge ST?
    Safety
The rear seatbelts optional on the Edge inflate when a collision is detected, helping to spread crash forces over a much larger area of the body and limiting head and neck movement. This can help prevent spinal and internal injuries. The RDX doesn’t offer inflatable seatbelts.
The Edge has standard Post Collision Braking, which automatically apply the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The RDX doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.
Both the Edge and the RDX have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, height-adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, available all-wheel drive and front and rear parking sensors.
    Warranty
There are over 11 times as many Ford dealers as there are Acura dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Edge’s warranty.
    Reliability
J.D. Power and Associates’ 2018 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Ford vehicles are better in initial quality than Acura vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Ford fifth in initial quality, above the industry average. With 18 more problems per 100 vehicles, Acura is ranked 20th, below the industry average.
J.D. Power and Associates’ 2018 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Ford vehicles are more reliable than Acura vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Ford 16th in reliability. With 7 more problems per 100 vehicles, Acura is ranked 20th.
From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ April 2018 Auto Issue reports that Ford vehicles are more reliable than Acura vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Ford 4 places higher in reliability than Acura.
    Engine
    The Edge ST’s standard 2.7 turbo V6 produces 63 more horsepower (335 vs. 272) and 100 lbs.-ft. more torque (380 vs. 280) than the RDX’s 2.0 turbo 4 cyl.
    Fuel Economy and Range
On the EPA test cycle the Edge gets better fuel mileage than the RDX:

    Edge
    RDX
    2WD
    2.0 turbo 4 cyl./8-spd. Auto
    22 city/29 hwy
    22 city/28 hwy
    2.0 turbo 4 cyl./Auto

    n/a
    22 city/27 hwy
    2.0 turbo 4 cyl./Auto
    4WD
    2.0 turbo 4 cyl./8-spd. Auto
    21 city/28 hwy
    21 city/27 hwy
    2.0 turbo 4 cyl./Auto

    n/a
    21 city/26 hwy
    2.0 turbo 4 cyl./Auto
The Edge has 1.4 gallons more fuel capacity than the RDX (18.5 vs. 17.1 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.
    Brakes and Stopping
For better stopping power the Edge’s brake rotors are larger than those on the RDX:
    Edge
    RDX
    Front Rotors
    13.6 inches
    12.4 inches
    Rear Rotors
    12.4 inches
    12.2 inches
The Edge’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the RDX are solid, not vented.
The Edge stops shorter than the RDX:
    Edge
    RDX
    70 to 0 MPH
    175 feet
    177 feet
    Car and Driver
    Tires and Wheels
For better traction, the Edge has larger standard tires than the RDX (245/60R18 vs. 235/55R19). The Edge ST’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the RDX (265/40R21 vs. 255/40R20).
For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Edge ST offers optional 21-inch wheels. The RDX’s largest wheels are only 20-inches.
    Suspension and Handling
The Edge’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The RDX doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.
For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Edge’s wheelbase is 3.9 inches longer than on the RDX (112.2 inches vs. 108.3 inches).
The Edge ST AWD handles at .83 G’s, while the RDX A-Spec AWD pulls only .81 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.
    Chassis
The front grille of the Edge uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The RDX doesn’t offer active grille shutters.
    Passenger Space
The Edge has 9.9 cubic feet more passenger volume than the RDX (113.9 vs. 104).
The Edge has .6 inches more front headroom, 1 inch more front legroom, .9 inches more front hip room, .6 inches more front shoulder room, 2 inches more rear headroom, 2.2 inches more rear legroom, 7.6 inches more rear hip room and 3.9 inches more rear shoulder room than the RDX.
For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Edge’s rear seats recline. The RDX’s rear seats don’t recline.
    Cargo Capacity
The Edge has a much larger cargo area than the RDX with its rear seat up (39.2 vs. 31.1 cubic feet).
    Towing
Maximum trailer towing in the Acura RDX is limited to 1500 pounds. The Edge offers up to a 3500 lbs. towing capacity.
    Ergonomics
In case you lock your keys in your vehicle, or don’t have them with you, you can let yourself in using the Edge’s exterior PIN entry system. The RDX doesn’t offer an exterior PIN entry system, and its AcuraLink can’t unlock the doors if the vehicle doesn’t have cell phone reception or the driver can’t contact the service.
The Edge’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The RDX’s standard intermittent wipers change speed with vehicle speed, but can’t turn on and off or change speed based on changing rainfall.
The Edge (except SE) offers an optional 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The RDX doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.
The Edge Titanium/ST’s optional Active Park Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling speed with the brake pedal. The RDX doesn’t offer an automated parking system.
    Economic Advantages
According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Edge is less expensive to operate than the RDX because it costs $54 less to do the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance for 50,000 miles. Typical repairs cost much less on the Edge than the RDX, including $116 less for a water pump, $167 less for front brake pads, $356 less for a starter, $29 less for fuel injection, $142 less for a fuel pump, $14 less for front struts and $315 less for a power steering pump.

Putting 21inch wheels on a crossover is ridiculous. Also, I’ve had one car almost crash when using auto park, it was a Ford. Thankfully I hit the brakes before it went full throttle in reverse through a fence. Your points are many, but they don’t contradict our review at all. As I said, “it’s not the amount of power, it’s how you put it down.” Same can be said for many of those other figures. The Edge ST is not as good as it should be. I’m not talking about the standard Edge, just the ST.

I should make a video myself...I have the 2020 ST and this is my review: good car, however the engine consumes a bit of oil, so check level about 2k miles after change. also the oil pan is made out of some plastic material, it leaks, which dealers want to replace often for about 1300. and as you may know, dealer service is higher than your neighbor mechanic. I did get the car used, have put in 10k miles and am learning the cons.

The RDX is in the same size class as the Ford Escape and Honda CRV. Not even comparable. It's not in the size class of the Edge. The A-Spec has the same power and torque as the base model RDX. The RDX A-Spec was a bigger dissapointment than the Edge ST was.

Does not deserve the ST badge. I own a Focus ST and the two could not be further apart. When I think of the ST badge on a car it means Ford has made it fun, engaging, and worth your money. This thing is priced at over 50k with options which puts it out of reach for most average buyers. Its a shame Ford has deserted its US enthusiasts while we have to look on at Europe enjoying the next generation hatches. There is an obvious market for performance SUVs but this one should just be a refreshed Edge Sport.

  • @66skate

I'd add adaptive suspension. A car like this will be used as a grocery getter most of the time and should be capable of adjusting for that. It can use a few interior improvements, such as sliding 2nd row seats, and a more premium look to the instruments and center stack like the 20 Escape and Explorer will have. As far as the fake noise, I have a Raptor and it has that also. With the radio on, I don't even notice it. There are ways to disable it if you really find it that annoying.

Which auto parks the Explorers perpendicular or willl parallel park. And I think take the SUV back out of the spaces. You have to hold down the button. Can't press it once then forget about it.

Not a fan. They are pretty proud of this thing as it sits atop the model line, but in the end, it is just a fast, numb, porky, utility vehicle, and in all honesty, is overpriced for what it is...imagine that. So, their grand plan was to kill off cars, but then make their SUVs faster. Should we expect an Escape ST and EcoSport ST in the near future? Maybe and Excursion ST too? I drove a '14 Edge Limited for a few months and it felt like a disconnected cocoon of a vehicle.

Oh, I only watched the first 5 min. and had enough. To make it short....No it doesn't make it worthy of the Ford Performance nameplate !

Ford is charging 10k+ for the same engine and speed edge sport.

Why would they compare to a pilot ? A pilot will be a car that will reach 200k miles while the Ford is crap.

The pilot is great, but the Edge smokes it! I tried both. It leaves the pilot in the dust

This is just a fat Focus ST but less. At least in the Focus ST and RS you can get a real transmission, 6 speed manual. Sorry you put the ST badge on a pig. At least give me the option to have a manual. The Edge ST and the Focus ST/RS have their place. They are 2 separate things. One wants to be a fat sporty thing, the other is a fun sporty thing. I love my RS... i'll never buy an Edge. Don't need the space. Guess all that we want here is oversized cars with no soul to drive around. R.I.P. for the Focus, Escort, Fusion and Taurus. God Americans are lazy ! And yes I live in Wisconsin.

They're pretty different though. This was designed more for performance whereas the subi is more of all weather/light off road car. This Edge, as it's mentioned in the video, wouldn't even be great on gravel roads.

This thing is so feminine looking. You’d expect more from a Company that makes the Raptor. Heck, can’t you get a base raptor for $55k?
