**UPDATE** it does work with Home Assistant and there are other updates you might want to know! Watch this: ua-cam.com/video/YnzxGfdHhR0/v-deo.html
damn Europe already sold out :(
Nice! I was wondering, based on the hint in a recent video of yours, whether we would finally have a reliably working mmwave presence detection sensors.😃
When we were building the smart research (lab pre-COVID times), we had assessed various sensors and technologies (BT - not accurate at all to be used in medical setting) and ended up going with a vendor using mmwave based presence sensors (almost 20 of them for the entire lab). After getting frustrated with the (lack of) accuracy offered by BT presence detection sensors, the mmwave sensors were amazing.
Furthermore, the product we implemented included additional sensors that Cohorts participating in the study would wear on a lanyard to enable the scientists in uniquely identifying each subject. That is one feature that I currently see missing from this Aqara sensor - I would be curious if you might know (or reach out to your Aqara contacts) whether they might be able to offer this kind of functionality via a hardware sensor or some software integration (e.g. user's registererd phone) to accurately identify a person detected by the sensor? I mean @5:30 into the video, would you really want Aly to listen to your playlist if, for some perfectly valid reason, she sat down in your chair? 😇😊 Also, any idea if multiple such Aqara sensors could talk to each other (I know, niche use case scenario but could be useful).
And yeah - the price premium for a commercially available sensor offering features not many (if any) other competing sensors currently offer is a bit high (IMHO) where only users who really know how good this technology compared to other competing technologies might consider. And even then, someone like me might think hard and twice about exactly how many of these I might want and which specific use case scenario in a home - whereas regular presence sensors are much easier to decide due to them being so inexpensive. Plus, FP1 can still be ordered via AliExpress for almost half the price and get (almost?) all the features?
Great video as always. 👍
@@toni7234 Be careful. Some sellers sell the chinese version as european and you will be limited in function if you don't link to chinese servers and app.
Thanks for your review Reed, just ordered mine!
EIGHT-THREE DOLLARS?!?! Nope. Too rich for my budget.
The Aqara FP2 Is A GAME CHANGER. Hopefully it supports more smart home ecosystems. 😍
Yup! This would be a great replacement for pressure sensors that are super DIY right now for detecting when you are in bed or sitting on the couch. Would be great if you could overlap zones slightly, so if you were moving from the couch to the dining table it would have it illuminated in advance and you're not walking into a dark room for any amount of time.
Hey Jesse! Yes I agree that it's a better replacement for pressure sensors. Factoring all the costs that this one sensor can replace makes it more reasonable.
Maybe 2 in one room could achieve this. One showing the middle zone with some overlap on the second one showing the outside zones. But yet it would be good if the app allowed overlapping zones!
You could make your lights fade off more slowly to compensate.
Nice video, Reed! Thanks for doing it and showing good examples of how you're using it. There will be a number of use cases where this will be a good fit. Thank you!
I reckon by having more individualy controllable down lights, and dimming then as you move, you could make the room lights follow you smoothly, dimming as you leave, but stay at 50% if you are in the zone next to it
This looks awesome! Might be what I've been looking for all this time to go all in on a Smart Home features. It being upside down on the stand and not Home Assistant ready yet are the only knocks against it. Can you do geofencing with it (tied to your phone's presence)? I'm def gonna have to look into researching it and eventually replacing all my light switches haha.
I was fortunate to get 2 of these. A suggestion, a video on how to setup and configure the zones and other features for this device would be very helpful. These tips would be huge. Thanks!
Something I love about this sensor is the look. I HATE placing my Hue motion sensor in the bathroom or other private areas, because people who haven't seen it before will DEFINITELY think it's a camera (due to the big white ball poking out of the middle). Having to explain it to everyone who visits me is both a little creepy and somewhat unbelievable lol.
"Hey guys, just so you know I PROMISE this totally isn't a camera peaking on you in the bathroom, just a harmless motion sensor" 😂
Good point! People do always think that and this will solve it.
For motion detectors I wrap them with thin black plastic, like something cut from a garbage sack.
(The plastic sheet does not have to be black, just so it's polyethylene.)
I cover the red led with black tape.
Not to mention the little black dot on the hue motion sensor. Looks like a webcam lol.
@@bob456fk6 This seems even more sus 😂
You dont have to explain my home my rules.
Just lean into it its a camera, it takes pictures so be careful.
Aqara is consistently making really useful components available without vendor lock-in at very reasonable prices.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing and have been waiting to see how great this is!
Thank you so much for sharing this video! I have to say, this presence detector is absolutely revolutionary. The technology behind it is truly impressive, and I can imagine it being incredibly useful in so many different situations. Thanks again Reed and Aly for sharing this awesome content!
That is pretty amazing! Thanks for sharing
This is pretty awesome. Ordering now through your link!
I wish it was Zigbee though. There are already too many devices that I've got connected to WiFi, and it's nice to have a separate network for these devices that are not connected to the internet.
Great video! Zones is indeed great! Hope EverythingSensor can do something like this within HA.
Did not even hesitate to purchase two of these and cannot wait to see them in action. I think this is such a great potential and happy Aqara came out with it. If it is half as reliable as the rest of their products I have and use - this will be great. The zone feature is what I am most excited about. Thank you Reed for another great video.
They don’t work bought two
I was equally as excited, but unfortunately for me the two I bought both registered frequent ghosts - and weekly I had to reset presence… I had to send them both back. Which was a pitty
Boy that Texas Instruments mmWave sensor is really flexing it’s muscles! Up to 10 people detection?! Can’t wait to get my hands on an equivalent one to make a diy version :) great video! Can I bug you to make a short show casing how many users the sensor sees in app? I’m curious how it deals with several people moving at the same time :)
Hello! We enjoy your videos so much! Thank you! I am immensely interested in learning if there is a way to automate the exhaust fan of the over-the-range microwave when my family cooks on the slide-in range?
This is amazing! Wow. Need to get them asap!!!!!!
Looks very interesting. The only thing I would change would be the harsh light switch on/off. Instead I would have the lights fade on or off to give it that fluid touch.
Yes the fast on/off is for demo purposes to show how responsive it is. I would normally fade the lights and have a longer delay to turn the lights off.
Love the video cant wait till it’s available in Australia 👍
What is the brand or link to your rgb light wall bar ?
That is pretty impressive. I was reading the device specs and was kind of confused what this thing actually did but your vide definitely makes it quite impressive how it works. Thanks for the upload. Update: went to Amazon and the item is sold out, I guess a little too popular it would seem.
To add the FP2 to Home Assistant you need to do the following steps:
1. Add the FP2 to HomeKit through the Aqara App.
2. Setup your motion zones in the Aqara App.
3. Remove any of the FP2 sensors from within the Apple Home app. Removing one will remove all of them.
4. It should discover the FP2 within HomeAssistant using the HomeKit Controller integration, and you just need to enter the Apple HomeKit device code found on the FP2. It will automatically sync the zones you previously created, and any future changes in the Aqara app for zones will propagate to Home Assistant.
Oh I haven’t tried removing it from HomeKit first. I’ll definitely try that. I got it to show up in the HomeKit Controller integration but it didn’t work. Thanks for the tip!
so you have to add to homekit? what if you don't use homekit but use ha? thanks
@@joeld9663 I only tested my method using HomeKit. As far as I know you can't add it to HomeAssistant any other way right now.
@ TrueFormStudios your solution worked for me! Thank you so much for the help and I've updated the pinned comment giving you credit.
Hi, so if I don't have an apple device, I can't add it to Home Assistant? (as far as I know homekit is only for iOS)
Definitely getting a few of these for my bus!!!
Multiple peple in room detection is amazing. It knows your sitting on the couch? Crazy!
Love your reviews and videos! Thank you!
When this is directly available in Home Assistant including zones, I might be getting more than one - how neat. And the distance limiting seems kind of critical for this technology - I don't really want to know when my neighbors are walking around (well, I don't want or need to know it, but how fascinating that I could).
The sensor doesn't look through walls.
@@ParodieHecker-mobile Are you sure? The other mmwave sensors I've looked at easily see through many kinds of walls.
@@Dorff_Meister I'm not sure where you're from but I'm from Germany and the walls in my house are so thick that no mmwave sensor that I used could do such a thing. Your name sounds german though.
@@ParodieHecker-mobile Yeah, my surname is definitely Germanic. I think you'll find mmwave sensors, in general, have little difficulty seeing through most walls, although it will have it's limits. Between my condo and my neighbors is little more than drywall, lumber, and insulation and I feel confident without proper placement and configuration it would trigger on my neighbor's motions. Or even within my house the motion from an adjacent room could easily bleed through.
I love aqara products, just a shame that here in the UK we still don’t have access to their smart plug yet 😢
I will be using this for my under cabinet lights for sure
Have you attempted to set this up on 2 different levels of the home for stairway lighting? Looking to turn on lighting when people walk by stairs on the upper and lower levels as well.
I am using a ceiling-integrated zigbee mmwave sensor for a year now, works well. Zones would be nice.
I'm only using the fp1 but even that is a game changer! I'd been trying for years to find a good solution for smart lighting in our office where my husband and I both play video games. Motion sensors don't work because we're sitting and I've tried IOT link on my computer but it's buggy and hasn't been working with home assistant for months. These aqara fp sensors are crazy accurate at knowing when were in the room! I haven had the lights turn off on me ONCE. I haven't even set up zone detection yet either. I can't wait to set that up so Home Assistant can know if my husband is at his desk. That's something I've never been able to automate before because asking him to get IOT link would just be a hassle
Omg dude thats insane, Its crazy how its able to do all those things in such a tiny little device cant wait to see whats next when it comes to sensors like that. Now imagine that but it being built into ceilings :)
There should be a light bulb shaped one that fits in a standard socket
Hey Reed, thanks for your great video!
I'm struggeling with your "walk through different zones and the lights go on and off in each zone"-automation. Could you please show your settings in detail for home assistant?
Zone based automations is sick - best selling point!!!
This device is seriously amazing! It's a game changer for my smart home setup.
Wow! I'm not sure what I'm going to use this for exactly but I bought one!
I was part of the beta program and it's amazing to see how it changed over the course of months since being in beta
That's sweet! I bet that was fun to get early access to it.
Any way you can share with me how to join the beta program? I'm an electrical engineer so I'm tinkering all the time. Would be cool to try the new devices they have
@@omar10wahab you'd have to submit a request to join via the survey I'll get you the link 🙂
@@SmartHomeSolver it was great! Seeing the development and having insider information and hearing about updates, very exciting news . Aqara also has a new sensor coming soon which I don't want to spoil anything. But be on the lookout for that ;)
@@frankraym dude tell us it could prevent us from buying something useless lol
It would be good nice to see flush mounted versions or maybe a recessed light with one built in so that they aren’t so visible
For me the main problem is that it needs the Aqara application to be configured. It will be much more interesting when the Zigbee version appears, although I don't know if it will have the capacity to send all the information out there.
Great find!! Thanks bud.
Thank you for another great video!
What bulb do you have in the Ikea Symfonisk?
It looks like green at the bottom and blue at the top.
Thanks!
Oooooh an outtro that is both funny and a teaser. I’m here for it
Is it possible to program it to turn on hue lights at a specific color temperature if I walk into the room at a specific time? For example, when I walk into the kitchen after 6pm, turn on warm lights. But when I walk into the kitchen at 7am, turn on cooler, brighter light?
Hey man, recently discovered yout channel and loved it.
What downlight are u using in your home?
Would i need anything specific to.make it work with this sensor or any smart light would work?
can you make a video about the electricity consumption please I'm looking to see if it's worth making a smart home, really excited about it!
Hey love the videos. Keep them up. Will this work in ireland? Thanks.
Thanks for your information. Very interesting.
Thank you for all yours videos about this!
Do you know where in US can I buy the Aqara Roller Shade Driver E1 ? it is not in amazon!
Great review! And keep up the great outros 😊
Thanks!
Nice vid man
Gonna get this for sure as soon as it gets integrated with Home Assistant
Update on that. Thanks to @TrueFormStudios I was able to get it working in HA. You have to remove it from the Apple Home app before you can add it to HA. Once I removed it, I could add it using the HomeKit Controller integration and it's working great!
@@SmartHomeSolver even zones are working on HA?
Yes, you set up the zones in the Aqara app and they show up in HA. Then you don't need the Aqara app anymore unless you want to change the zones.
@@SmartHomeSolver Hopefully at some point zones can be done natively through Home Assistant.
Can you do a thorough break down demonstration of how you get your smart motion sensor lights/switches to dem in and off please?
If he's uses Lutron Caseta (which I think he is) this is a standard on/off feature.
The lights service in home assistant has a transition parameter to specify how long it takes to transition between two light states.
Damn, I just got a bunch of hive motion sensors to mimic this kinda of thing. I'll put them in the corridor and beroom then. I'll get one of these Aqara ones for my main living room which covers my kitchen too. It needs to be in stock sooner!
Aqara is one of my favorite companies. They really seem focus on building that are very fast, small, and capable
Hmm, I just bought 2 more EP1 few days ago... Seeing this I really hope there is a way to add something similar to zones to the EP1... The multi person tracking (at least 2) would also be nice... If not, I guess I will wait for EP2 or FP3.
Same, but don’t be disappointed, the FP2 isn’t what it’s cracked up to be and I’ve send mine back as they have their problems and got my EP1s out which still work flawlessly
Definitely going to get one
Does it work around corners, or does it need direct line of sight? Also follow up to that, can it be used for multiple rooms or you need one pr. room?
Would love to know where you placed it when you tested it out in your living room. Just wondering it’s range
Thats awesome 👍🏾👍🏾
Great video, not sure if this is possible. Can we have a zone defined and whenever someone walks in to the zone, pause the TV? My kids usually go near the TV while they are excited, we have to keep saying “go back to couch”. This can be a great help
Nice video. What about Smartthings integration? Do Zones and Routines work?
Thanks for the discount code but impossible to order in Europe due to a lack of stock since April 20th.
Have you done a full home assistant tutorial? we really need that
Reed, what is your home assistant set up on? Do you have z-wave and zigbee working? Newbie here looking to start on home assistant.. Especially for this fp2 sensor
Can't wait until this is integrated with Home Assistant, the possibilities will be amazing!
Awesome sauce 🎉
Do I need smart spotlights for this to work ?
AWESOME! Thanks muchly for the code! it worked great for UK AMZ. and I'm glad you've mentioned about the HA part. I'm fully on HA and not on Apple eco-system. And as you said, can't wait for it to be fully integrated with HA.
Sooooooo...item is coming on Saturday, is there any way at all in the mean time for it to be somehow integrated into HA? Cheers
Another person just commented and said to use the HomeKit Controller integration but don’t add it to the Apple Home app first. I haven’t tried it yet but I will later today.
@@SmartHomeSolver please do let us know how it goes. Cheers
And can now confirm it's now sold out in AMZ UK.
Got it working using the HomeKit Controller integration. The user TrueFormStudios said that the FP2 has to be removed from the Apple Home app before being added to HA. I removed it and it worked!
@@SmartHomeSolver thanks. Then it doesn't have to be added back, correct? As I am not an apple user. Sorry for the novice question as I have never used or configure homekit controller.
Aqara really ready for the era of smart home
Hi, which is the lamp behind you? I love it
Wow that one is super expencive!
Reed, The lights in the kitchen/Dining/Living room seemed to shut off too quick. On fast is good, but is there a way to delay turning them off?
I was going to get one, after watching this video, but it’s currently out of stock. 😢
I know you got tons of devices running for all your automations, do you mind sharing what is the router or mesh router that you are running with? Thanks!
I wonder if you could make an automation for example, if your in the dinning room, to dim the kitchen lights and turn on the dinning room lights and vice versa.
I bought this thinking it was going to be an amazing product, specially with that price tag, but the issues with ghosting make it extremely unreliable for any serious application.
The most recent patch did not completely fix the ghosting issues, as was promised... so I am finding myself running the absence training over and over.
@smarthomesolver Hi there. I am a bit late to this video, but do you know if the Aqara door sensors can turn on a TP-Link Kasa smart switch? Or would it only work with Aqara switches? Thanks for you help
Can you do a how to ie showing how to program it to switch lights on in each zone using HomeKit thanks
This is pretty cool!
Will this work with Phillip Hue lights as far as on/off in different zones as you demonstrated with your ceiling lights?
You mentioned your pet is too small to trigger the occupancy. Is it possible to edit the sensitivity to allow the sensor to detect pets as well?
What a device!
Nice, yesterday was thinking if position detectors exist
Oh Supreme Master of All Knowledge, is there a way to use more than one FP2s in the same room? I'd like to extend their coverage to improve on blind spots, is this even possible?
I like how we're at a point in time where every smart product has one of these two sentences in it:
"It runs on matter so connectivity is really rough"
or
"It'll get matter soon so connectivity should improve!"
hahah
Do you plan a feature on Home Assistant's Voice stuff they plan for may? :)
Yes this is a great sensor, I actually control lights in three rooms... Pass through the door (zone) and turn on lights in the next room... Too cool...
We need a full video on how to set up the lights thing! 🙏
I'll see what I can do!
Reed, an amazing device, very pricey tho. Where you able to run the on/off lighting effect in you great & kitchen area with one sensor? Also does it work with SmartThings? Thx!
The price sure is a shock to the system, but the number er of sensors it could replace would offset that.
Though it's too late for people who have already invested heavily in PIR and contact sensors.
Yes all of that was just one sensor. It doesn’t work with SmartThings right now but it will for sure when Matter support rolls out.
Great stuff! Mine comes in the mail tomorrow. Question: What brand of lights are you using?
Lucky you. It's sold everywhere I looked.
informative but also entertaining video, just bought one for my own use. also love the code you included for us, thank you bro.
So do you have to use Apple Home kit and have an ipad, home pod mini or other hub device from apple in order to the Aqara FP2 to work with Amazon Alexa?
Will they work in random, for example have more than one in a room too increase accuracy .
For example can u set a routine if sensor 1 detects someone and sensor 2 detects someone can you run a command.
Thanks @SmartHomeSolver so much for a great video, showed my wife and it might just work! :)
Any chance you could organise an Australian promo code please??
Do you know how to use the nest thermostat e temperature sensor to toggle smart switches?
Super cool! Now I can't wait for your ChatGPT video!
Reed, after 7 months are you still as enthusiastic about the Aquara FP2 as you originally were? I ask because the reviews on Amazon are surprisingly low at 3.5/5 (although, I do recognize Amazon users' experience is much less experienced than you). And long shot question - I just read FP2 has fall detection. Have you tried or tested fall detection?
Haven't skimmed through the comments or your other videos, but was intending to ask - do you have a video where you automate your lights? I assume you have them connected to apple home or something and thent he sensor takes care of everything by using some automation software? Would you care to elaborate?
I dont seem to be able to get these in AU yet, but hoping HA intergration will be available by the time I can. But thinking I can use it to turn on and off switches in Alexia that HA will see, so might be able to work around that way.
It's not even available in the USA anymore. Got to wait. How long? No one knows.
Can you share the script/HomeKit setup where you auto turn off and turn on the light please? I’ve been trying to do an automation similar but with an ac but with no luck.
