To me pernell roberts or adam cartwright made bonanza complete. He built the ponderosa house can you imagine? He was cool on the show I love his character wish he would of stayed to complete the whole series but now I understand why he left thanks Barbo for the great info on pernell roberts bonanza 🐴❤
I did not realize that Pernell had offered to come back on occasions to visit or still kind of be a part of the family still. ( I think I had read that somewhere) Why didn't they take him up on that? That would have made it so much better. They were a great family and he would have made that seem so much better. I have seen an interview with David Dortort talking about it and he just seemed angry with Pernell so that is probably why he wouldn't just have him back occasionally. Big mistake! The ratings would have been great. The episodes with Adam kind of made it complete. I loved them all but I liked having them all there. I love your videos. Thanks for making them.😊
Great vid! 😁 Personally, I think people are really too hard on and judgmental of PR for leaving. I am sure we have all been in situations, professional or otherwise, that we left because they no longer fit our goals or served our hearts, sprits, and personal growth. Bonanza was no longer serving PR, and, from the sound of it, never really served him to begin with. While it would have been wonderful to see the series continue with the character of Adam, I fully understand his need to walk away.
I really wished he had taken Lorne Greene’s advice and stayed for the money…enough money to do the acting he really wanted to do on the off season. Can you imagine 14 seasons of Bonanza with Adam? ❤️ But now, as the truth comes out, I understand why he did…had to do…what he did, and I admire him even more for it.
14 years as Adam Cartwright? A 45 year old single cowboy still living with his pa? Untenable. Pernell wanted to do all the other roles that would come to an actor of his age, 31 plus. The money wouldn't buy him back those lost years. What we are not to know--what there doesn't seem to be much information about--is why his career was so rocky afterward when he had already proven his immense talent before Bonanza as well as on the series. He wanted to go back to the stage but that didn't happen in any very fruitful way. He should also have been making movies. William Shatner also had a classical career before Star Trek and he had mixed feelings about having given the rest of his life over to Captain Kirk. While Michael Landon, in contrast, loved playing Little Joe and developed from a total doofus to a competent writer and director.
@@mickyalberta3484 Agreed! It would have been wonderful though…and this is a total selfish wish on my part…if David Dortort had agreed to let the character, Adam, marry (but not Laura Dayton) and let Pernell visit the main household a couple of times a year. This would have let PR follow his heart and allow us to see Adam mature with a family of his own. If only….sigh ☹️
pernell roberts left bonanza after the 1965 season but at first it seemed he was gonna be able to leave after the 1964 season..so that was why they brought in guy williams to play cousin will to be his replacement..in addition they also brought in kathie browne to be pernells love interest..the plan was they would get married by the end of the season and that was how they would explain adam leaving the show..but as things turned out the producers found a way to keep pernel for 1 more season..so what to do with guy williams and kathie browne? so they changed the story line right in the middle of filming and had guy williams and kathie brownes characters get married instead and together they leave the show in the final scene of the 1964 season..so i guess had pernell left in 1964 we might of seen guy williams play cousin will for a few years and that also means he would never of able to take the role of john robinson on lost in space which started airing in 1965..
I would love for you to cover his album come all ye fair and tender ladies on your guitar barbo I love your voice ! ❤ I have that album too ! Love it 😀
He was my favorite and I was kinda in love with him. I was young and I just couldn’t watch it anymore because he was not on anymore.
Never the same without him, the four together made Bonanza perfect. 🥲

A good actor has to honor his own experience and instincts. Pernell did the right thing for Pernell. I honor him for it.
This is great thank you for doing these videos!

I also read that Pernell offered to guest occasionally but NBC turned him down. The biggies with their little nosies out of joint, who knows now?
Great vid! 😁

Wonderful information, thank you. I understand his motivation. It's lovely to know they continued as a 'family' after the show ended.
This just makes me respect him even more! ❤ Thank you so much!

What was the purpose of the stand in?
Hi. Thanks for watching. The stand in is just for lighting and blocking.
