Adam was one of the most loved characters on the show and Pernell Roberts became a household name because of the show. So why did he eventually leave the show so soon? Why didn’t we see Adam Cartwright throughout the entire series?
The sad reason why Pernell Roberts left Bonanza is because he didn’t like the character of Adam Cartwright. Pernell Roberts was a serious actor and felt that Bonanza - as a show - wasn’t a serious show. He also felt that Adam Cartwright wasn’t a serious character.
He thought it was ridiculous that the character still lived with his father and depended on his father’s approval to do anything. He also felt that the character wasn’t as forthright as he wished.
Even during his time on the show, he didn’t mind expressing his displeasure about his character and the show’s storyline. He wasn’t even afraid to tell his fans about how he wasn’t pleased with the show.
In fact, later on he felt that he didn’t enjoy working on the show at all and was happy to leave the show. To him, it didn’t matter that he was turning down a large paycheck - because he felt he was improving his emotional wellbeing.
Nevertheless, he managed to have a successful career after the show ended. But for many fans, we’ll always remember Pernell Roberts for his work on Bonanza. Even though he wasn’t pleased with the show, he gave a great performance as Adam Cartwright. It’ll go down as one of the great performances in American television history.

Reading how unhappy Pernell Roberts was on Bonanza, one was never able to tell! He was excellent in all episodes and enhanced scenes in which he starred. I am glad he returned in Trapper John MD where he obviously enjoyed his role. Miss him. Rest In Peace. God bless. Of note, he reportedly did not get along with the other cast members. But he attended the funerals of Michael Landon and Lorne Greene as well as paying for the funeral of Victor Sen Yeng who was destitute. A truly good person!

    • @verahall6498

He actually did get along with his classmates, it's just that he was very outspoken when it came to creativity in making things seem much more a reality within the episodes. He felt that having to always ask permission from their father wasn't absolutely necessary and I totally agree, especially in some scenes when Ben would tell them to go to bed, now that even I had to agree with but that's just the way that the scripts were written so he had to comply. I've read that he wanted to attend the funeral of Dan Blocker but the family just kept it to a close minimum for some reason in which I 'm sure that he completely understood, I don't think it had anything with any reported not absolutely true discord between the 2 of them but yeah he did get along with his castmates, he was just moreso the type of person whom just took his work very seriously and wasn't always for the fun and games.

Pernell Robert’s will always be Adam Cartwright even Gregory Harrison told him one time you know you’ll always be known as Adam Cartwright don’t you and Pernell said I Know. Pernell took himself and Bonanza way to seriously. If he had just relaxed and just remembered it was just a show and had bonded with Dan Blocker and Michael Landon a little better especially Landon he would have been a lot better off. He missed out on having life long friends. He did talk Dan Blocker into buying a race car with him that didn’t do very well and him and Lorene Green were good friends all the way until Lorenes death.
He was doing a guest appearance on Mission Impossible and visited Green and Landon on the Bonanza set after he had left. I remember entertainment Tonight did a week long tribute to Bonanza and Pernell refused to participate and when they interviewed Michael Landon he said “ I always got along with everybody then said I never got along with Pernell nobody got along with Pernell”.
Robert’s did officiate over Victor Sing Yungs funeral( Hop sing).
David Dortort said he saw him at Dan Blockers funeral and He and Michael Landon both attended Lorene Greenes funeral. I’ve read where he spoke at Michael Landons funeral but I never did know if that was true. I also read where Landon was visiting the hospital where Trapper John was being filmed a couple of different times to see his mother and came up and surprised Pernell and both times they gave each other a bear hug and talked a long time but I never did know whether to believe that or not. The reason I know all this is Gunsmoke and Bonanza along with the Andy Griffith show are my three favorite shows of all time.

True PR and ML had a nice reunion when Trapper was filming on location at a local hospital in LA. Witnessed by Betty Endicott, an actress and stand-in who worked on BONANZA and later, Little House and still later, Trapper. She spoke of the reunion at BONANZA Conventions near Lake Tahoe.

I know what you mean by pernell taking the show to seriously, but on the other hand , that was part of his appeal, he was a man of principle's, I think he also was a good role model for kids. @@edmondcamp2878 , I think you know your stuff, but Betty’s account is verifiable. She said it numerous times, initially as a guest at the Bonanza convention at Tahoe in 1999 (I was there) and then in subsequent interviews. Why would she make it up? Certainly people who were on the set witnessed it and can talk about it, but who is going to ask a grip, a sound engineer, an assistant director? All those people who are on the set are not exactly standing in front of a microphone or being asked to give interviews on a variety of subjects, least of all one or two days with Michael Landon and Pernell Roberts at a reunion 40 years ago. Nancy Greene also said that Pernell came to visit Lorne when he was in the hospital not long before he passed away. (Of course she was there.) But the public knows Michael came to visit because ML issued a press release afterward. PR’s not that kind of guy.
PR didn’t consent to do the ET bit because he wanted to be paid. ML said snide comments about PR because he thought it was funny and entertaining on TV. They were not good, good buddies, but they were not on the outs as much as press would have you believe.
If BONANZA is one of your favorites, then you know CBS Paramount Home Entertainment released the complete series DVD set at last this past week. You may also know there’s going to be an online Ponderosa Party Time next weekend to celebrate the releases, where DVD executive producer Andy Klyde will show clips and answer questions via Zoom. @@jamesngetha6760 I’m not saying Betty was lying I’m just saying rumors get started about what people said. I’m not saying she didn’t say that either I’m just saying as much as Pernell hated Bonanza and knowing how much Pernell hated being on Bonanza I just wonder what’s hearsay and what’s not.
I heard an interview with Pernell Roberts on the Mike Douglas show in 1965 after he’d left Bonanza and he said he was miserable on Bonanza and was making everybody else miserable. He did say he would have loved to have stayed but the scripts were horrible and he couldn’t get the higher ups to do anything about it.
As far as Pernell attending a Bonanza convention he never did. He never had anything good to say about the show. He didn’t even want to call Lorene Green Pa and they said what are you gonna call him Pernell hey you? As far as Michael Landon joking about Pernell it was on Entertainment Tonight in 1983 and they were doing a special on Bonanza and Michael was dead serious when he said “I never got along with Pernell nobody got along with Pernell”.
However there are photos of Mike, Dan and Pernell laughing and clowning around on the set of Bonanza but Pernell said on more than one occasion Bonanza was what he called junk tv and it was ridiculous for three grown men to still live with their father and get his permission to just go into town. David Dortort who created Bonanza said Pernell was a great actor but he was never happy and always wanted to leave. When Entertainment Tonight did the special on Bonanza they said they couldn’t even get Pernell to talk to them about it or even commit on it.
In Lorene Greens daughters book she said she said she was disappointed when she ask him to tell her something about Bonanza and he wouldn’t even talk about it. She said later she sat beside Pernell on a plane and he was very nice but never ever said anything Bonanza or never would.
Pernell was first and foremost and theatrical actor and according to Landon he thought Bonanza was beneath him.
I’m sure Pernell was a nice guy but he hardly ever if at all have anything good to say about Bonanza.

As much as I've loved ( and still do and always will), Bonanza, I have to admit that it was because of Adam Cartwright, now don't get me wrong, because I loved all of the entire Cartwright family but Adam was and always will be my most very favorite member of the family so much so that once Pernell left the show I actually stopped watching it altogether, plus once the tv series came out on DVD, I purchased seasons 1-6 because of Pernell portraying Adam, I 've never purchased any more DVDs after season 6, shucks no Pernell , no me , but I've always followed his entire career, loved him on Trapper John MD, amongst other projects as well
but for me he was and always will be my most ultimate A#1 very favorite Cartwright family member. Thanks Pernell Roberts for all of the magnificent entertainment memories. May you and the rest of the wonderful beloved Cartwright family forever rest in peace together within the great Ponderosa beyond ❤️💙❤️💙❤️💙❤️💙

There’s no doubt Pernell Roberts was a versatile actor who gave his all to a role he didn’t enjoy. He was at his best in The Crucible with Lee Marvin. But the rest of the cast were perfect in their roles, think of the relationship ship between Adam and Little Joe. Adam, 12 years older, can belittle his younger brother but also be protective. If I had to nominate a favourite it would me Michael Landon, who wrote and directed several episodes - noteably those in which he casts Little Joe as a comedic character. There’s one 2-part episode I have yet to watch that Michael wrote in which Joe

I can understand Pernell Roberts frustration at none of them ever got married, despite Ben having opportunities of having a 4th wife. Bonanza had already run it’s course, Joe getting married was the last hoorah for an iconic western series that I still enjoy watching on UA-cam. I think Pernell was somewhat frustrated not singing or playing classical guitar. As a classical musician I can relate to all those feelings, whereas the others in Bonanza didn't fit any classical mold.

The producers should have listened to Mr. Roberts. It was their fault for not accepting others points of view. So maybe that was why he dragged his feet a bit. They didn't appreciate him enough and focused on Landon which towards the end changed the original Bonanza terribly ( it was great already and should have been left well enough alone) Landon, a favored one, was being groomed for Little House on the Prairie which was great too, but not for Bonanza 👎👎👎. Ironically, most of my favorite Bonanza episodes are the ones featuring Adam Cartwright, and I think that's for good reason. Pernell always had the more mature episodes, and brought a lot of nuance and depth to the character of Adam that distinguished him from the other cast members for me. (Not to say the others were bad!) I was always a little more drawn to Adam as a character. I do think Pernell brought up a ton of valid points about the scripts and direction of the series. I always thought it was bizarre that none of the sons got married and had children of their own. IMO it would've allowed for more expansive stories on the show and taken it in a new, fresh direction. But the series remained pretty stagnant and formulaic in character development, which I don't think Pernell was wrong to comment on. Glad he did what made him happy, but ultimately I wish they took some of his concerns into consideration before he left. Magnetic actor, he was really great.

He did potray the character Adam real well, and nobody else couldn't match him on it. It was said that he was unhappy on the show, and wanted out of it, think there was no contract so, they released him even though his tv dad, Lourne Greene tried very hard to talk him into staying, however his mind was completely made up, and he walked, never to return again to Bonanza.
