This is my absolute favorite of all of Shirley Temple's dance routines. Really fast and difficult. I read that this routine actually gave her trouble. Still, Shirley was a dancing prodigy.
its so unbelievable for a little girl like her to memorize such a long dance performance, songs and lines in her movie but she did it like everything was all just a game for her... so brilliant! R.I.P
Shirley was gifted. She had no trouble learning dance routines. She often had the entire movie script memorized and would correct the adult actors when the flubbed lines. She was a smart cookie!
It didn't go as smoothly as you would like to think. According to Shirley's bio when it was time to go into the recording studio to dub in their taps to the already filmed sequence, they had great trouble. "Someone" was always off a little. The dubbing of the taps was not matching the taps as seen on the video. The engineer could not determine who was off and so Faye and Hayley blamed little Shirley. Shirley did not think it was her and so she blamed Faye. Things got rather tense after hours had gone by and there was not one acceptable take. So the engineer came up with the idea that Shirley, Faye and Haley would each dub in their taps separately. That seemed to solve the problem.
I love all three, but Jack Haley looks like he's having the best time and there's nothing he'd rather be doing. *Very* attractive quality! I wish he'd made more films, but he said he never thought being in the movies was the be-all to end-all. He was so talented--singing, dancing, comedy, acting--he could do it all.
Oh my goodness! I can't take my eyes off that little darling! What a gift from God! There hasn't been one like her since! Of course the tin man is great and Alice Faye. Loved watching this! Thanks to whomever posted it!
Alice Faye said she really wasn't that familiar with Shirley Temple when she was cast in this movie. She wasn't thrilled with being in a movie with some kid and couldn't understand how they expected someone so young to learn such an intricate routine. Shirley not only was a delight to work with, but breezed through this number. Faye said Shirley was the greatest natural talent she ever knew. Her mother would sit to the side and say "Sparkle, Shirley!".
The highlight routine from Poor Little Rich Girl. Military Man paired Shirley Temple with Jack Haley and Alice Faye. The results were fantastic. At age eight, Shirley showed the world that her dancing and singing were enough to pull in moviegoers to theatres during those Depression days. A time when they cursed the movie stars on cross-country train tours to promote their latest films for their wealth while millions struggled to get jobs. However, Shirley gained their love. Who could hate a child who was, at one time, the number one box office draw? Thank you for posting. FOOTNOTE: Not all of the adult film stars were hated. They had their share of fans, of course, but the public was frustrated with so many out of work, in spite of the WPA and other job creation programs during FDR's New Deal.
I love the swell close-up of the trio at the very end. It was as though Fox knew what a show stopper this number was, and decided to give them the "star treatment sign-off" in that brief shot, a sort of "tip of the hat" that all three so richly deserved. What a wham!
That was a very hard tap routine. I have taken tap for years and I could never have mastered this without someone dancing in front of me so that I could imitate them.
Just saw a documentary with Alice Faye. She commented on this dance and said she felt it was one of her more challenging dances and that Shirley kept up with her and Jack Haley. This was always my favourite growing up (B&W, of course). Whenever I look at the six on dice I think of this dance and call them my little soldiers. Don't know why but it's been that way for the past 45 years.
This was a different time definitely. What a performance. Great ensemble casting with Shirley, Alice Fay (one of my favorites) and Jack Haley (good old Tin Man himself). It's hilarious how old man Peck can't control himself in the control booth.
@@SillyCreatureSally No, actually I thought Alice Fay was the ideal woman. Earlier in the movie she sings "But Definitely" -- I can watch that again and again and never tire of it.
It was a beautiful world back then. Children were cherished and they grew up the way they should have been. People had manners and respect. Nowdays kids don't have very many role models. As parents we must teach them. Or they will fall apart.
Wonderful routine and of course Shirley Temple was phenomenal... but I'm also noticing that Jack Haley and Alice Fay had to do this all in "baby steps" to exactly match Shirley's little leg movements. It's a masterpiece!
How can any kid of that age be such an amazing dancer, it's fantastic! She said in an interview long after she'd grown up that this routine took ...oh, 'bout a week' to learn! Lord alive, HATS OFF, THAT'S what you call a star!
People are not the way they used to be. For instance, Jack Haley seemed like the ideal guy, and, sadly, most of the boys at my school are complete idiots.
Always thought it was strange that they put a tap dancing number on a radio show. Just read that Jack Haley and Shirley Temples mom got into a argument because Jack claims Shirley couldn't keep up on this routine. Mom of course said otherwise. They secretly had the 2 adult actors do the number without Shirley, dubbing Shirleys taps in later. That did look like a difficult number for s child to do.
Shirley said in her bio, of her Fox audition something like "What mother didn't even know, what nobody knew, is how much I loved to dance...." :) It shows!
I love ALL Shirley Temple movies--but this is my absolute favorite. I think Jack Haley is so funny, and I wish he had made more movies. The whole cast is just great, and the musical numbers can't be beat.
According to Shirley's bio, they weren't so synchronized when it came to dubbing in their taps in the recording studio to the already filmed version of the number. "Someone" was always a bit off from the tapping on the video as Faye, Haley and Shirley kept pointing fingers at the other. Eventually the sound engineer had to record each person's tapping separately.
I love this number...takes me back when I was a little girl!! The girl on Seinfeld who plays George Costanzas' fiance "Susan Ross" could totally play Gloria Stuart's part...they resemble each other!
Apparently during filming Hayley complained because he had trouble keeping up while Shirley was doing just fine. After the film was released rumours spread of Shirley faking it which made Gertrude Temple upset so she had Shirley do the dance in front of a live audience to prove her daughter mastered the number.
the last movie she did as a child actress was when she was 12. she went to high school and they asked her if she wanted to keep acting when she was older. She said yes and retired from acting until she was like 23.
@1laughinggravy Yeah...I love this movie, too. I'm not a big Shirley fan, but I can't resist this movie. This dance number is incredible. I wish "Poor Little Rich Girl" was on DVD!
Gosh, I'm crying as I watch this. I've seen this many times before but it never ceases to amaze me. Is there any wonder why she was tops at the box-office?
I love old movies and know a lot about them and I do believe that they had a routine because when they did some radio shows, they also had an audience at the same time.
That Shirley is not the thinnest or trimmest! Not that she ever went into the FAT category, but maybe flirted with it. But, she is incredibly cute for all the "solidity". There's something about her, a very great star indeed, that combines so many ingredients that I don't think there will ever be anyone like her. Her "imperfections" are part of her enduring charm, which even as late as 2012, I can tell you from personal experience, can still steam-roll you quite nicely!
I wonder if that is Bill "Bojangles" Robinson singing in the acapella section that starts around 40" -- I would love to know -- the lead and vocals are fabulous.
Who was it that said never act with children or animals? But Shirley was the biggest movie star of her day and I'll bet Jack and Alice were delighted to share the stage with her.
You couldn't be more wrong....Jack Haley and Alice Faye were fantastic dancers and would hardly have trouble keeping up with a kid. "The film’s final musical number, “Military Man”, was too fast and intricate for Temple. Without telling Mrs. Temple, the studio called back Haley and Faye to repeat the number with Temple‘s taps dubbed in. You are right. It was a very difficult dance. In a documentary on Shirley, she once said it caused leg cramps and was one of the hardest routines for her.

I've had a crush on him for only 9 months. I was a picky little kid, not at all interested in The Wizard of Oz, and, last May, I decided to give it another try. I caught the Tin Man adorably tapping along with the music, and the rest is history.

She was so brilliant. In this routine, she had to learn more steps then the adults 😳
She had trouble redubbing the taps in the recording booth so that they would match up with the filmed version.
My favorite too!!

It took longer it was very complicated, she said this took 6 weeks.
she a mimic, she could see you do a dance step, and pick it up right away, she was incredible.
Regardless of how many weeks still a fabulous routine & her timing was exquisite

Can't forget the beautiful GLORIA STUART, who later around fifty years would give an ACADEMY award performance in TITANIC.
Jack Haley played Nick Chopper, BTW. I'm just spreading awareness of the mysterious phenomenon that is continuity.
Amazing how Shirley remembers every step! In all...her movies!
Not only was she a little one doing all those dance steps, she was keeping up with Jack Haley and Alice Faye. She was such a talented little girl!
