That was an EXCELLENT demonstration of the effectiveness of airing down the tires. And completely by accident, too. I think that moment should be highlighted. Good Work!

Damn I get 16 mpg combined and my 2018 4runner has a 2 and a half inch lift and bigger tires and heavier wheels on it along with other armor. Either way the 4Runner is my favorite vehicle. Absolutely have no complaints besides the mpg but it’s a sacrifice i make for the enjoyment, reliability, piece of mind, and knowing this machine can take me anywhere anytime and bring me back.

Fun video. Love my T4R. Theres a good reason why the 4Runner doesn't have all sorts of extras and the same engine its had 4ever. Nothing breaks. Ever. And when you are in the middle of nowhere you know it will get you home every time in any weather.

You can get accessories that you can get to air down all 4 at same time to a specific pressure. Just look up offloading clubs to see what one's work best and how far down you can go.

My wife has recently had her eye on a 4Runner up from her initial interest a RAV4. What a coincidence. For the last 2 years she's been scouring up everything about RAV4's. And then just recently she's been talking a 4Runner. This is from a lady who's already had 3 4Runners and got another one for her son. After watching this video I am really impressed with the 4Runner and I really hate to say this but I really like that Army Green 4Runner but my wife doesn't care for that color. Thanks for putting this up I enjoyed looking at possibly our next vehicle.

Atrac, which is called MTS in the newer Toyotas. MTS is a variable ATRAC that allows you to adjust the amount of slip allowed before intervention. For instance in mud you wouldn't want super early brake intervention because a spinning wheel is good where as on rock you would.

About fuel economy...the 1GR-FE is a bit thirsty but man oh man it may run forever. Having owned GM and FORD....TOYOTA rocks in quality and reliabilty. Where you finally stopped was the spot that you should have engaged the crawl control. I have a trd off road. In order to tow my boat off the beach sand I use crawl control. It is the only way I will get it off. I had people try without using it with no success. Momentum helps when you can get it, but from a standing stop crawl control is better than human control.

When driving in snow/ice conditions, car reviewers should be testing with proper winter tires: "All terrain tires have a rubber compound that is designed for warmer weather use. Dedicated winter tires have a compound that grips better in colder temperatures and a tread pattern that is better suited for traction on snow and ice."

Excellency review!!... I have the 4Runner TRD Off Road with Fox Shocks and a Magnuson Supercharger (installed last year) that I love so much, it is definitely my forever rig lol... My only dislike about it was the lack of power on the highway when it came to passing and accelerating faster when on the highway, especially when fully loaded for overlanding.. The Magnuson supercharger makes her feel exactly as you would expect an SUV of this size to feel.. I can pass on highways EASILY now.. Even when loaded up with water, extra fuel, my rooftop tent, food, spare parts, recovery gear and everything else needed for remote touring.. It feels more like a V8 now!.. Even every aspect of off roading is even more funner than it was!

The only thing (i can respect and understand why) is that, when you guys get stuck slipping or sliding, you go to "lets go as slow as possible and see if that will fix it" and most of the time, that will get you out of trouble. But i think at the end, instead of just backing down the mountain, you should have backed down a few feet to where you had grip, turned off TCS and just hammered down and see if it would get through that rough section.

Try it again with studded tires and lock the rear diff. Also, slow down when it gets rough! Tires are the only thing that create contact traction. Clearance is great but you can plow through snow with a FWD car on studded winter tires and a slow rate of speed. You might turn your front clip into a snow plow but it will work. You can have a car with all lockers, a center diff lock, be on street tires (G63 AMG) and not make it that far. Contact contact contact.

After the extremely wet snow comes down, it packs down, melts, freezes over, churns, and crusts over, it's like driving on ice cream mud that's crunchy with a thousand layers of different density.
I am originally from the Midwest, lived through New England winters and Pittsburgh winters, the packed snow here is really hard to drive on esp with hills. And I am a winter tire (Blizzaks) finatic

@@puregsr - I'm in Utah. I understand all that, to me it is weird seeing a TRD Pro struggle like that. It's not really a ton of snow that they were on, usually on these kinds of videos they have a harder time traction-wise with tons of mud, deep watery mud or a ton of sand. I know the packed snow and ice would be a problem too.

Was the locker engaged? Also recommend the TRD Offroad for most people. It has optional Kdss for better on/Offroad performance, as long as the vehicle maintains stock height. TRD Offroad does have the factory rear locker.

KDSS equipped vehicles can be lifted a few inches (3 I believe) without any major modifications. My TRD Offroad/Trail is lifted 1.75 and zero issues with KDSS. But I also agree with you. I think the TRD off road is the way to go. TRD Offroad with no kdss can be upgraded to an even better suspension than the TRD Pro, and for much less.
