Just a side note: MTS can be used in 4Hi (that’s why it did not turn off automatically when switching from 4lo to 4Hi). The only mode it can be used in 4Hi is “mud, sand, dirt”. Everything else is 4lo only.

When it comes to snow, it really doesn’t matter too much what rig as long as it’s 4x4, but definitly tires is the most important factor along with clearance if you are dealing with super deep snow. These traction aids are great if you have good actual snow tires or at least 3 peak snow rated AT’s.

I picked up a 2023 TRD off road premium with KDSS…… it’s my pre retirement vehicle most likely the last vehicle I will buy. Plan to drive it until I can’t drive anymore. Love the truck….did two quick oil changes to get all the wear metal out of the engine at 700km and 1300 km respectively…..glad I did. Lots of metal… hopefully by the next change it will have resolved itself and the break in is complete. I will plan to do the same with all the other fluids…. Transmission transfer case and diffs. Just to make sure everything is wearing as it should and get all the grit out of there.

At 11:30 you touch on my favorite part of vehicles like this. The mechanical nature of their four-wheel drive systems, where you can just sit there, gunning it and spinning the tires, and it won't complain. No clutches to heat up, no CVT to overheat, no warning messages and cut power. It'll just let you hammer on it all you want to your heart's delight. Sometimes you just need that. As capable of some of the Subarus and things like the Honda Passport are, they just don't give you that mechanical nature and robustness. Also, in this particular model, there's just something so satisfying about slipping that four-wheel drive shifter into four low. The manual tcase shifter is one of my favorite features of my 4Runner.

We picked up our new 2023 Subaru Ascent last week. Swapped the wheels/tires for 18" with Wildpeak A/T Trail and headed up to snoqualmie pass. First tried to make it to Gold Creek Pond, but too many unprepared drivers got stuck and were blocking Lake Mardee Rd. So decided to hunt for the old offroad trail you use to use for testing, but took the wrong exit (Tinkham Rd). Didn't realize it was the wrong one, but the fun part of the road was closed already anyway. Ended up finding a fun forest service road out near north bend (NF-5600) and had a blast in the snow. Still hope to find your offroad trail. The Ascent did awesome in the snow! We encountered 18" of snow at the deepest.
Already have the full 3 piece skid plate here, installed the rear diff plate, installing the last 2 plates (transmission and oil pan + front lip) this weekend when I can get the car on some ramps, then headed back up to the mountains this weekend.
Your channel and videos have been a huge inspiration for exploring more 'off' roads in the area.
Also really enjoy the 4runner. My Wife really wanted one, but lack of room in the 3rd row plus storage was a deal breaker for us. I'm looking forward to the redesign Toyota has for it soon and hoping they give more room for the 3rd row (we are a family of 6).

Having driving a no frills FJ Cruiser for 10 years, I have already regretted not getting the 4runner then. Today, the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk has priced itself out of contention, the RAV4 is great for a toy, the Cayenne gives me the towing I want (for a great deal of money for a used one). But this 4runner impressed me hugely. Loading up a TRD 4runner today, it looks like exactly where SUV's should be.
The only question for me now - do I wait & see what the updated 2024 is going to look like or not. I think I would love this before the update though.

What you continue to exhibit is just how important traction is. Which is why 4 wheel is better than 2 wheel, Traction control attempts to serve this to the operator by sending power to wheels that grip. The locker further servers this physics factor by assuring more wheels are getting power. When all this fails because of physics factors like grade and terrain (Snow &/or ice, slippery rocks etc) than traction breaks down despite the features. So, the driver here understands in certain situations momentum can help. (Again, physics; object in motion tends to remain in motion..) to a point... Speed in forms of a 'bump' can assist a vehicle over a large obstacle. Speed uncontrolled can make things very dangerous however. But physical factors can defeat even momentum. For instance uneven ground x speed = friction break. Or the Tire leaves the turf. The faster the tire goes without friction = even less control. (Like when your foot hits ice under a powder snow) Off roading has so many terrain features, adding snow and ice simply makes any of it more difficult. Having a tire that can shed snow pack is huge. Again a great tire packed with compressed snow is a slick. A mud terrain would have served you well on that track. I enjoy off roading for the physics of it. It really would make for the BEST physics classroom. Kids would LOVE IT! Adding in ropes & Recovery, block & tackle, leverage lessons. Nice job.

Why didn't you use rear locking differential on the hill climb? It would have made it easier.

Yup the TRD Offroad is just like the Pro. Except for the BBS wheels and different tires, Fox shocks, TRD skid plate, roof basket, etc. So yeah its exactly the same except for the very items people would kill to have on their lower trim levels. It”s not the same dude.

I just wish they would get a more reliable set of coil overs and shocks. I finally got rid of my Heep of a Jeep after two years but I have had three of the four fox shocks replaced on the four runner within 10k miles of ownership. Besides that, I do enjoy it a lot more and not having a radio that shorts out like the Heep is a wonderful feeling.
