- Bringing some love to the Gelli community I'm discovering online!!! I've been experimenting again and trying to find ways to transfer images. My latest discovery is using wax crayon rubbings on lino cuts / relief card cutouts etc - they transfer beautifully and you can just build those colour and texture layers on top!!! This example is my first try, so really pleased it worked. Enjoy, comment, like and all so on!!! Shout out to Kim whose comment on a previous video speculating about wax crayon was the seed for this idea!!!
My favourite gelli print tutorial on UA-cam by far❤️ I’m surprised you don’t have a bigger following. I’ve subscribed and love all your work and techniques🥰. Will have to try them out …. Many Thanks … you are very talented 🤩
Wow! What a comment! I'm really new to making and posting on UA-cam and am just getting a feel for what works. Your feedback is lovely and very encouraging - so glad you're inspired! Stay in touch and let me know how the techniques work for you. : )
You are a genius, indeed a very generous one! Thank you so much for all your videos...!!!!
A pleasure to share, keeps me busy and discovering : )
im sitting by myself and still audibly going, "THIS IS SO COOL". I think I've found my favourite cure for artists' block -- watching these videos.
Mate! I have learned SO much from your channel. Just wanted to say a huge thank you
O man, the best gelli plate tutorials and other printing ideas i have seen on youtube. I found your channel only today and i cannot stop watching. For hours now. This really will help me to make further steps into printing at home. Thanks a lot !!!
So pleased the videos are giving you ideas and encouraging next steps : )
This is an awesome technique!I’ve been teaching gelli printing to my grandchildren this summer. They’re going to love this one!
Great to hear, hope you have fun ; )
What a cool Channel!! Thank you for sharing!
(Love your joke about primary school, too!)
LOVE YOUR STUFF!! Came out very well!
You are so creative and your compositions are always amazing and well balanced. Thanj you do much for inspiring me. You have no idea the joy your art can bring in a day. 😊
you are my new gelli-hero !
Lol, a lot to live up to! Glad tyou're enjoying the techniques I'm sharing : )
Thank you for sharing . I would never have thought of using wax crayons ! Gelli printing is addictive ☺
I know what you mean, I can't believe, after years of lino printing, it wasn't the first idea that occurred to me!
Love your stuff
This is amazing! I love your frog and the colors of the finished piece. I can't wait to try something like this. Thanks so much for sharing.
Go for it, you get a lovely soft print transfer from wax crayon rubbing :)
I have been printmaking for about 10 years now…mostly woodcut…love your work and am so excited to try this. Gonna grab some old plates that have been hanging around and give it a go…mind just went to the childhood practice of using this technique on leaves…grasses…what about textures in fabric/rugs. Getting a bad case of the “what if’s” - thank you for that…keeps my heart beating. Smile. I will send this video on to my printmaking buddies.
Cheers Violet - the blocks with a lot of surface and minimal carved areas see to work best. My heavily reduced blocks I've had less success with : )
I appreciate that you use found objects and don’t just buy a lot of fancy equipment to do these techniques. Prompts more creativity. Now I’m looking around my house thinking about what I can try with my gelli plate!
Hi Heather, I'm much happier making my own or finding my own stuff to print with. I feel more creativity, ownership and the results are more spontaneous and surprising. It's also a lot cheaper!!!
Love it
The best presentation I've seen. So much valuable info packed into each vid! TKU!
Brilliant!!
: )
Love your techniques and your simple straightforward presentation
Cheers Kay, just tried this technique with a masking tape collagraph and it worked well : )
The toad, found one just like it hanging out in my flowers under the garden hose the other day. Had to watch the video to see what you did with the toad. Inspired. Please keep making and posting.
Hello Sunshine Bee, finding a toad under a hose, I reckon, must be the making of a day. I have been checking in with the baby frogs in our pond, no toads yet but we do have newts. I will keep making and posting - the videos, it turns out, are really rewarding. A lot of people are now commenting and letting me know they're useful : ) Have a lovely day
Very cool, indeed!
Of course, you could use the textured plate directly on the plate, removing paint, that would be a very different effect though!
Hi there, I tried that a few weeks ago but it got a bit messy, but i was using tiny linocut stamps. Maybe if I used an old cut that covered the full Gelli...
You really sparked my Gelli frenzy again. I was looking for a way to transfer drawings other then with laserprints and your tutorials and experiments are amazing. And so much fun! I even bought some small Gelli's...:) So thank you so much for sharing. Always a pleasure to see what you have thought of next.
This is amazing ! Blown away by this technique- out to buy some crayons !! Thanks for being so inspiring Mark - absolutely love your work 🥰
I LOVE your tutorials. Always so inspiring and informative. THANK YOU BAZILLIONS!!!
This was brilliant!! Got my ideas flowing!! How long do you leave you print with the book ontop before pulling?
what is the wax crayon you are using? i tried using some dermograph pencils but it didnt really work well (i will try again)
No matter how many times i watch your videos i am inspired anew every time. Thank you so much for all you do. Great job!!!!
Fabulous! That has given my 1000s of ideas - thank you! Reminded me of brass rubbing!
Giving ideas and possibilities is all I was hoping for with the channel Maria so that's lovely to hear!
Totally subscribed, I am obsessed with gelli printing ❣️
So cool, I had not thought to use a rubbing from Lino cuts. Would a rubber stamp work as well? I will give it a go tomorrow and experiment to see. Thanks for sharing all your experiments. Such great ideas. Love all your techniques in one print.
This is just ingenious! Your adventures with the Gelli Plate are very inspiring, and much more artful than what many people do with it. Thanks for the creative jump-start!
Cheers Janet, glad you're enjying my adventures. been really enjoying adapting the gel plate to my existing loves. Glad to have given you a jump start : )
Yes : back to primary school. I did it to have some coins in my pocket when I was a kid.
This video is cool to me cause I did recently many linocut to print. I will change my way to print and i will also explore thé gelly plate and this technique.
Thanks a lot for sharing. All your vidéos are delightful. 😊
Thanks for sharing this is awesome! This is my 1st time to your channel but it wont be my last.
Hi Fiona, thanks for the encouragement, hopefully you'll be a regular and I'll hear from you again!!
As a kid, I spent many a fall afternoon rubbing leaves with a crayon onto paper. I’ve been struggling with my gelli plate, lately. If they’ve been stored properly for a number of years, do they still work, or do you think I just need to keep at it? I got the impression from one of your other videos that just practicing it over and over, until you get the right feel of how much paint , etc. is time well spent.
Hi there, sure you gel plate will be fine. One viewer commented that you can recondition them with baby oil, seems to work. Definitely keep practicing, I think it is really necessary with the gel plate : ) best of luck
Love your work & enthusiasm….so happy to have found you !….thank you
That’s Grade A poultry printing.
Thank you thank you 🎉
True Art with Geli Plates
Wooden block stamps have a new purpose, finally - what’s old is new again 🤘🌻
Yes Beth, indeed! Look at for my next video - more rubbings for transfers!!!!!
I was thinking the very same thing!
You are a sweet and imaginative male art maker! male for doing this video! Brilliant, I can use this technique for my prints.
Glad to be of help Kate! I'm finding making the videos very useful for me, keeping me with purpose and focus after a big life event.
Wow, from a wax rubbing, this is stunning ❤
Can you say more about the "wax crayon" - specifically, what are you using? I tried Crayola Wax Crayons (because that was all I could think of) - and it did not work :-( Any advice is much appreciated - LOVE all you do - keeping me going during these tough times and I thank you!!
HI there, just a plain old crayola! You need a decent amount down and then very light touch and thin layer of paint : ) hang in there!!!
Another inspirational video! Now I'm going to have to do some lino-cuts! lol Even just finding things with cool texture for background rubbings...so much potential! Thank you for opening up the creative ideas using geli plates! Pablo Picasso is one of my inspirations and he was known for his experimentation and playfulness in art! You have reminded me of that!
Cheers JL, lovely message. Lino cut is really rewarding, hope you enjoy it : )
Love your videos! Thanks for the wonderful instruction!!!!
A pleasure Rita : )
This is actually so cool, I remember going for walks just to find rubbing templates on wooden posts, gives me year 3 vibes 😂
Lol! People are starting to notice in my area and give me weird looks!

Yay for the crayons!!! Yay for the collograph!!! Time for me to get busy. :o)
Go for it Kim! Any old linocuts you have lying around... loads of fun!
Forgot to add CHEERS !!!!! for the speculation about wax crayon as it was your comment that planted the seed for developing this idea and video!!!! This UA-cam community stuff is fruitful!!!

That little groggy is so cute! ❤
Such cool results from such simple supplies. Thankyou!
That’s the aim, simple and accessible 😀
Also l love your thumbnail, will you share the name of the video editor and how you create the thumbnails. Please.
Hi there. I am using the most basic equipment compared to a lot of youtubers!!!! iPad to record footage, iMovie to edit. I make the thumbnails using the Procreate app, again on the iPad. Hope that helps : )
wow this is great way to use some of my linocuts!!!
: )
What?!! This is brilliant!
so fun!!!!!!!!!! thank you
Don’t stop using the gelli plate! I love your gelli videos!
No danger of that anytime soon!!!
Thanks for sharing! Your experiments are so inspiring - and I love your artwork!
hi and thanks for the videos. Have you tried colour laser transfers?
Hello Ecky, no not tried colour. Have you?
Do you let the final paint layer dry before pulling it up with the image?
Yep, I let everything dry then pull with one, last wet layer.
A virtual masterclass on printmaking and the gel plate. It’s got it ALL!
Thanks for all the info. I have only just started using a gelli plate and you have given me plenty of projects to think about. I really look forward to your next videos!❤
Wow this is going to be fun can’t wait to start rubbing. Forget the ironing!
Why can't creases be in fashion,? just for a few years! I think irons should re reserved for creased paper
This looks so simple, yet nothing transfers to the plate. wax rubbing- check, acrylic paint on plate, press rubbing into paint on plate, burnish and pull paper away. Nothing on the plate. What could i be doing wrong? Loving these tutorials!!
Hi Mary, for me, a thin layer of acrylic and light pressure is essential.
@@yeatesmakes Success! I was too heavy handed, as usual! Thank you, I'll keep watching & liking!!
That is so clever I am Learning so much thanks
Pleasure !!!
HEY! Rosemary Morris sent us to come see your art! WOW
Hey there! : )
Awesome idea!!
Love your videos! Thank you!
Cheers Janice, a pleasure to share : )
Yeates, mate, how come me graphite transfers stay on the gelli plate and i can't seem to remove them? I've tried baby wipes, alcohol...still a very distinct image on the plate ?? Thanks.
I find baby oil and wipes get rid of it. however, I forgot to clean a plate recently that I had done a chalk pastel transfer on to and it stained it badly. No big deal, just a bit distracting for further prints!!!
@@yeatesmakes thank you, baby oil on my shopping list now!
Another Great idea!! Thank so much!
A pleasure : )
Excellent! Ty!
Top Artist!!!
Thank you for your fab techniques
Cheers Valerie : )
Fabulous
I love what you do with your gel plate. What is a China Graph pencil? Thanks for all the great vids!
Called a grease pencil in US, I've heard it called china marker in UK too.
@@yeatesmakes Thanks. I'll try searching for a grease pencil.
How long do you leave it before you pull it?
Give it at least 10 minutes, back when I made this video I wasn't leaving it long enough and sometimes paint that wasn't dry would rip the surface of the paper... a general rule is that if it feels cold to touch, it's not dry
Fantastic!
Your experiments are so fun to see!! Take care.
Glad they are enjoyable : )
Amazing
Love it!!
Wow! Awesome technique! So fun!
Loads of fun - I've been loving doing rubbings off lettering and numbers while out and about...

Thankyou, Kari. Really pleased you're finding my tips inspiring. Plenty more to come, all feedback welcome!!
Omg. You’ve just changed my life. Am working on a couple collagraphs at the moment and wasn’t sure how they’d work out on the gelli.
That's grand!! I could spend hours messing with this technique. If you seen some of my recent videos I've been doing a lot of wax crayon rubbings from anything i can find out and about! They transfer beautiful and add a lot of texture and atmosphere!
Thanks for the inspiration
