    Put a perforated tile line on the end of your French drain to the center of the pond, once it fills up you could remove it or just leave it

    When you have all your clay liner in place, get a couple of rolls of flexible 4 inch pipe, connect it the pipes you have feeding into the pond. Run the flexible pipes down to the lowest section of the pond. This will then remove the hazard of the incoming water from gullying out the clay. As the water level rises all you have to do is reposition the flex pipes outflow.

  • @thereplacementfordisplacement

    Once you are done with the liner you may want to harden the entry point of your french drain so that it doesn't wash out the clay when pond is full. I don't know for a fact but logic tells me that over time of repeated floods it could damage your pond by thinning it in that area. Good luck, amazing that the natural low spot on your property had everything you needed. Good thing you didn’t bury that area with your extra dirt.

    Two notes for you. 1. One benefit of that 2nd pond is it will actually help nature out. Provides a more accessible water to wildlife so I bet you'll see a bump in birds, frogs, deer, etc in a year or two. Also, letting water sit and soak really helps your ground water stay up higher (helps trees and native species too). 2. Told ya you should installed a diverter for your French drain for when you wanted to do pond maintenance in the future :) I guess you didn't have to do much extra re-work but think about it if you ever have to do maintenance at the top of that French drain.

    I think this will work as long as you can keep the runoff under control from washing the clay down to the bottom. Do everything you can to fill the pond as fast as possible to stabilize the bank. keep a small stockpile of clay to fix the ruts that may form on the upper part as it fills. I am rooting for your success on round 3

I’m interested to see how you make that second pond into something more than the pumping pond that it will be! Like maybe it becomes a beauty spot of your yard with a dock and underwater lights. Not sure how useful that would be for your property, but it would make great content that we’re all interested in!

  • @ProductiveRecreation
    @ProductiveRecreation Місяць тому

    Your smooth drum roller will smooth the surface, but without the kneading action of the sheepsfoot, it won’t compact the bottom of your loose lift much, if at all, unless your lift is really thin. With clay, the loose lift thickness should about match the height of the “feet” on the roller so they penetrate to the bottom to compact it from the bottom up rather than top down. In your application it’s probably ok, but more compaction generally leads to lower permeability. Believe it or not, compacting wetter clay (on the wet side of optimum water content) generally leads to lower permeability than compacting at moisture content dryer than optimum. Letting it dry more may make it better for the machine to work there, but might not be best for your low permeability goal. Of course, without compaction tests you don’t know exactly where “optimum” is, and where your moisture content is relative to optimum.
