The pits you noticed running along the jaws are called Foramen and are thought to supply the soft tissues of the face (presumably big lizardy-lips) with blood and nutrients. Many lizards today like monitor lizards have them too! Phenomenal attention to detail, just really outstanding work!
I was hoping someone in the comments knew, that's neat
I thought they were heat sensors like snakes ngl
Some nice lip holes
@@randylivingston9440Dude, since when t-rexes were known for sensing heat?
@@greenapple9477 to be fair, a Rex is just an ancient reptile, and a lot of reptiles do have heat sensing capabilities. Even if not to the extent of a modern pit viper. Again though it is more likely these are foramen and not heat sensing pits.
I have no idea how you can sell something you’ve wanted to do for so long. A true artist. I certainly couldn’t sell something so cool
400 hrs of work is expensive though
Never seen you craft before, happy little stumble in my feed. As a huge fan/nutcass for dinosaurs, jurassic park and all things prehistoric, I was absolutely glued to the screen watching this. Your narration, tone of voice and craft skill is incredible. If I had the money and didn't live over the pond I'd be buying this for sure. I'm truely amazed at the work. Incredible my man, amazing
by the way, trex skulls are full of old fractures, broken teeth, lacerations, etc... that void above the eye is very realistic like the trex got into a fight with another animal or even another rex! we also commonly see laceration marks on trex bones that line up exactly with triceratops horns. Beautiful sculpture ❤
Great points!
your workshop has got to smell soooooo good with all that wood. My shop smells like engine guts and oil.
I would say both have a great smell haha
I wish i had a shop to smell
Haha maybe we need to start making candles of our shop smells. “Freshly sawed wood” “carburetor delight” 😂
@@BMSculptures Yes?? do it! id totally buy candles with wood! Such a magnificent sculpture. So beautiful.
My "workshop" (my room) smells likr fresh hay and greens because of my bunny, and honestly? Fresh hay smells amazing.
1000 years old Redwood Burl, and you matched the significance of a piece of wood like that.
Phenomenal work!
Absolutely incredible, and sold for $48,000. I wish I had seen this sooner, I would’ve bought it myself LOL. What a wonderful piece of art, and congrats on the massive sale
To be able to acquire an old growth redwood that's over 1000 years old is astounding on multiple levels in itself, but then to turn it into THAT exquisite piece of art is the kind of transformations in life I will never tire of. Congratulations on a long journey that proved beyond successful.
Thank you! It was a very special piece of wood and I am so fortunate to use it for Old Red.
Only a answers: AMAZING, ADMIRAL
Just stunning work....a great white sharks Jaws next please... incredible
That needs to be in a museum! Amazing work, once again.
For real. Hopefully a museum buys for people to enjoy it.
“That belongs in a museum”! Thank you for that!
The only problem with it going to a museum is those fuckers will want him to donate it cause they are cheap he won't get paid for it like he should
@@brandon3777 true which is sad. If that’s the case I wouldn’t do it. Just too much work to just donate it. I’m sure the redwood alone cost way too much
I raise the same question, I don't really know how museums acquire their work... That is why I brought it up, to see if anybody viewing works at a museum... I am hoping someone can help me find the best direction to go.
That’s the most amazing and beautiful wood sculpture I’ve ever seen and I’m a massive fan of dinosaurs and their realism/attention to detail and I believe you nailed it and did the right thing with keeping all the small blemishes to give this sculpt character. Truly inspiring!
Thank you for making something so amazing to honor this special piece of wood, and for sharing this with us. Thank you for not giving up!
The dimples around the jaw are for nerves! I don't remember whether they're anchor points or something else but they've got to do with the nerves in the tyrannosaur's lips (we know they had lips partially _because_ of the even arrangement of the dimples, which I think is really neat). Glad you included them in the sculpture, it came out amazing!
With the way they seem to come out of the skull it's very likely they were nerves yeah! My guess would be the same as yours, them being anchor points for nerves to sprout out off.
I think you are correct! Have had lots of people mention this!
If I remember right from a film I saw ages ago Crocs have very similar dimples and they're nerves that detect vibrations.
@@tsunamihilmy I was thinking about the whole vibration thing which iirc sharks have, not sure if that would explain anything since I'm not at all sure if the dinosaur in question has been proven to have some form of vibration location (in sharks it's with electromagnetic waves or something similar). Aside from nerves and blood vessels, those holes seem huge still.
@@tsunamihilmy For the hole be that big you'd expect something like a human leg to be provided blood, I doubt it's just nerves and blood circulation.
The holes you're referring to at 12:37 are called "foramen" or "foramina". Originally they were passageways/tunnels for nerves and blood vessels. Pretty common in most vertebrae lifeforms, including humans. Love your work, sir.
Those “holes” allows attachments to the lips to kiss, smile, and even snarl, depending on your attitude.
Came to comments looking for an answer to this. I never knew about these - thank you for making it clear
Thank you for telling us what those holes are!! 😊

That’s one of the finest pieces of wood sculpture I’ve seen anyone has made..outstanding 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I’m so glad you chose to work with the imperfections! It adds the perfect character to it, and lends itself well to an old fossil look! Awesome work!
I'm so glad you didnt give up because the piece is fantastic! Truly a major accomplishment.😊
I would go with it and if I didn’t like it I’ll would do one of the two options
When you said the 400 working hours I knew this will be epic, but man the result exceeded my imagination. Defiantly your best sculpture ever. Also love the fact, there is not any epoxy in this project. Well done
Thank you David. I am very happy with how this thing turned out. Love your channel BTW!
@@BMSculptures Thanks Blake, much appreciated. Good luck selling this piece, no doubt this will be an awesome decoration for the right customer.
@@DavidsWoodturning A $48K price point is absolute lunacy, no matter how nice it looks. It is indeed a nice sculpture. That said, the price is ridiculous.
@@deadbirdwalking1159 People normally say “ridiculous” price when they definitely cannot afford that specific item even if they would work non stop. Hey Blake
I came up to this video after i was trying to recover from a sad incident as my wife suffered from a miscarriage and we lost our twin boys...
I watched this video with my wife and she was really astonished !
We realized that this is life...ups and downs

I have no words. It is absolutely mastful, it's like magic watching you carve it! I love the imperfectsion as well, especially because I too struggle to accept them in my work/art too. Either way, this was absolutely worth it, and you are incredibly strong to have persevered enough to finish this spectacularly epic sculpture! ❤

It’s always the most challenging works that you’re the most proud of. Absolutely gorgeous piece
This piece is freaking unbelievable. I've watched all your videos and love every piece you make but this one has to be my favorite so far. You're a true artist!!
Awesome sculpture! I think the void on the skull makes it look more like a proper fossil from either morping or an injury (called a pathology). Also, the little holes above the teeth are likely attachement points for muscles and nerves that would lead to the lips that covered the teeth on most dinosaurs! These holes can also be seen in lizard and crocodile skulls.
👍😍
They are for sensory glands like Alligator & crocodile have. You almost got it completely correct. Pray especially afraid or spooked pray put off an odor those sensory glands pick up on. We'll that what I've read & I'm 99.9% positive. Nah I'm 100% or I would not have mentioned it. They are usually night hunters or ambush predators.
As a person who is in contact with skulls on a daily basis I found this so cool seeing you carve one, most dinosaur skulls are ridiculously similar to bird skulls and seeing the same holes I see on this as I do on bird skulls was enlightening to me
What do you do that you come into contact with skulls daily??

This is a truly stunning piece. I enjoyed watching it come together from start to finish. It's just beautiful and looks like the real thing. Wow!
I love the flaw in the wood you are right it makes it look more authentic. You really did do an amazing job!
As soon as the void came up I immediately thought that I would’ve kept it. It not only is apart of the ancient tree’s past, but it would look like the skull is more withered and authentic. Very beautiful piece ❤️ It would be absolutely stunning in a museum!!!

Most museums would accept this as a donation, I don’t think many would pay you for it, as they’re mostly government funded, and don’t have the right to make purchases.
More than anything I'm impressed that you had the courage to cut into such an incredible and valuable of wood. I'm hoping you found some cool uses for the scraps and cut offs.... would make some peutiful pen blanks and small carvings....
I feel the same way. For a huge burl like this, i would be so hesitant to do big cuts…
This is a stunning piece of art! Thank you so much for sharing!! You are very VERY talented!
The void over the eye gives the sculpture a unique touch and also represents the original wood even more. I love that part. Would have kept it too.
Your work is amazing! It is awesome what you are able to create out of a piece of wood (and sometimes other materials).
Wish I had only 1% of your skill.
This is absolutely a piece of art for a museum! But not for free! You deserve a hell lot of money for that masterpiece!
You are gifted beyond words. Such talent should be showcased on a level such as a Master class. Your works should be sold out worldwide.

Hey Blake.. I've been watching ur videos for a little over a year now and even though I've already seen this sculpture , I had to watch it again. All of ur work looks very BEAUTIFUL...u keep saying that this was ur favorite to do and I really think it's because this was something u have always wanted to do and u had all of the control in everything in the design of it (meaning not commission and someone else's idea) so this was something you finally got to do after all that time and it turned out absolutely gorgeous
Breathtaking sculpture. I look at my cutting board that you made and understand, just a little more, how talented you are and how much work it took to make the T-Rex. Stunning piece.
You're SO RIGHT! The notch over the eye looks incredible. It adds so much character and life to an already spectacular work of art
Thank you so much!

this looks absolutely incredible!
amazing work, Blake!
That is absolutely incredible! I love the complex grain of the wood, and the extreme detail, absolutely gorgeous!
The complexity and physical difficulty of this project clearly offered a mountain of challenges, but you overcame it all to create a real masterpiece. Truly mind-blowing to see this gradually taking shape. Such a treat to watch a master sculptor at work on his craft. Thanks.
The lines that dynamically run along the top and sides of the skull got a huge “whoa” from me, this is absolutely insane levels of craftsmanship.

As a hobbyist carver I must say that this is incredible!!! Your skill is very apparent! The wood is beautiful and working around the void was the best decision you could have made! Bravo sir bravo!
I am calling it, right now. You are on your way to becoming the “Bob Ross” of wooden 🪵 sculptures. Keep up the good work.
Ahh, that's going a little to far. I know some world class carvers from big bear lake Ca. Google it & the wood carving scene. That place is full of carvers from Canada Europe & even Russia. They carve eagles that look life like Totem, bears & you can name the animal & they can carve it with just a chainsaw only. No little Dremel tools just chain saws of all sizes of blade. This guy's good really really good but I've personally seen guys that talented if not more talented in big bear lake Ca. Well they were from all around the world but lived up there at the time I was into chainsaw carving. I'm not even on this guys level. Especially after I broke my neck. I can't hardly hold something that heavy for that long anymore. Lol..

Master wood worker here and I am not impressed…
I am in AWE! That is the most amazing piece of wood working I have ever seen. This is a priceless piece and belongs in a museum!
I'm very happy I'm glad to have found this video. The last few days I've been under great emotional stress. Still am. I'm 48 years old, was born with cerebral palsy, almost died twice in the last 15 years. First time I almost died in the hospital from a chemo overdose. And last year roughly I almost died from a stroke. Basically the ghost a Christmas past. I had caught Covid, and it had mutated within my body. Once you have cancer, you have it for life even if it's dormant. What had happened was that covid fell in love with the fragments that are floating around in my bloodstream, and try to absorb them into itself, causing an allergic reaction to the virus. So I suffered a stroke.
I'm currently in and out of a wheelchair, and I'm taking care of an elderly mother who is wheelchair bound. She's legally blind, and has a lot of medical issues. I wouldn't say that she's senile yet, but she has neurological issues from things that have happened to her. Sometimes when dealing with her you can tell that the record is skipping. She gets very confused.
I don't want to get into details as to what happened, but a few days ago I think I had a nervous breakdown because of the immense stress that I've been under. I'm getting NO help. No family, no friends, nothing from social services or anything or the like. At this point I feel emotionally numb and I don't even know exactly how I feel.
So I understand how it feels to feel broken.
But I thought this was a beautiful video. I appreciate the work that goes into it, and being a dinosaur nut, I appreciate it even more. Probably wouldn't know it, but when I went to college, I initially went there to be a paleontologist. So I get more out of it than you probably think I would
I don't know if you know this, but would you have any idea what the closest living relative in the animal kingdom that's alive now that's actually the descendant of a T-Rex?
Believe it or not it's actually the chicken. That's why in some ways when you were doing the skull it kept reminding you of a bird.
Figured you get kick out of that!
As to the dimples around the lip, some of those are blood vessels or holes for blood vessels to get to the outer part of the face so that the blood can get to the muscles on that area of the face. As human beings we have 6. 2 where our eyebrows are at, 2 on our upper lip, and two on our chin. Same concept here.
And depending on the cavity / dimple, it could also be openings for nerve clusters. The T-Rex had a TON a sensory organs on its head. Similar to the snout on a Gator. They had extremely good smell, and exceptional hearing. They had pretty good eyesight, but they relied more on smell and hearing. It looks like they actually used echolocation similar to a bat when they would hunt. Some of these holes that you see in the head fed into organs inside the skull that helped him track pray. So that's where that comes from.
But again, thank you again for the video!
Your ability to flawlessly merge wood and epoxy in your sculptures mesmerizes me every video!
Appreciate your decision to keep the void over the eye as nothing is perfect in this world . That adds character to the sculpture. Incredible work
man i hope this was sold on an exclusive art auction for at least a million dollars. seriously. impressive work.
When I first seen T-Rex, it was completely breathtaking. What a remarkable job you did you should be proud of it. I was sitting here looking at it, and I was sitting here, crying, remarkable.
So what ya do with something like this is you get several other of your pieces and display them at a well known art gallery. Art galleries attract potential buyers of art works like this. Plus it’s a great way of getting your name known in fine art circles, which could bring you even more commission work from interested parties.
I forwarded this to a wood carving dentist friend who would appreciate your efforts on many levels. Incredible work. Good eye. Great ability to rework the plan as you progressed. Patience is a virtue that rewards those who practice it.
There aren’t words to describe this piece. Simple words like beauty and amazing just pale in light of the piece itself. Fantastic job!!
Congratulations on creating (and finishing) your Magnus Opum! The end result is nothing short of astonishing beauty. The rugged look on the brow is fitting for a T-rex, none of these beasts lived their full lives unscathed
