You ever consider finding a way to take those layers off as sheets instead of trimming it down for that first bit. It would make gorgeous floor or wall coverings! The gradients of wood and bark in a sheet are amazing! And you make some extra money while learning a new skill? This is an amazing video all on its own. I just thought about this and didn’t know if you had considered it.

Can only imagine how terrifying it must be to sit beside something of that mass spinning at those speeds. Let alone to poke and prod it with tools just wanting to bite in and take you on the ride of your life. Then you do it enough times that it all seems like it’s normal.
I’m more amazed that those small points hold all of that mass. If that thing came loose, it’s definitely game over. Amazing skill, you have to respect a tool & piece of of material like that or it will make you pay. That’s what makes this guy a master, he knows how far to push it safely.
It’s spindle turning…..nothing complicated about it. Impressed with the endurance required, but so much of the wood could have been cut away initially (and used for other projects) instead of turning it into shavings- “work smarter, not harder” - and I thought (hoped) we’d see a fountain, with colored water at night under lights, flowing out of the top (I thought that’s why it was drilled out in the center, for plumbing). That’d be cool. You could carve all sorts of wonderful designs into it - but if it’s going to be left plain, as is, well….it could have been styrofoam or resin (and a lot less work, and one less dead tree). Hope you’re planting trees to replace the ones sacrificed to ornaments…..remember, the trees made life POSSIBLE on this floating rock in the first place !!!! Without them, this place is full of CO2, and completely unlivable……and we thank them by chopping them up, endangering our own survival. BRILLIANT Ever consider how a tree produces hundreds of thousands of leaves every year, yet the earth around it doesn’t get used up ? How do they make all that material “out of thin air” ? Leaves are mostly carbon and water…..trees pull carbon right out of the air, and can DRINK water right from the air (mostly at night when humidity levels go way up) Now there’s 8 billion of us, taking in oxygen and exhaling CO2…….and what percent of the world’s trees are GONE ? about 5 years ago I saw one of these creations in a really large furniture store while visiting Laos, of the hundreds of pieces of furniture in that store I only took a pic of this. forgot all about that pic. A couple years ago I first saw this video and thought how cool is that! Shortly after seeing the video I found that pic taken in Laos and ever since try to come up with a way to buy a cargo container of these and have it shipped to the US where maybe folks would pay big $$ for one of these, and enjoy the beauty of it...

naive comment, akin to not removing natural undergrowth...even though it leads to massive fires from minor lightning strikes due to it being fuel. The result is burnt down trees and forests. Trees are a beautiful 100% renewable resource! No clear cutting though!

Only in Asia can you find such dimensionally stable, whole tropical logs. Here (in the good-ol' U.S.A) I would have had to turn this in conjoined, hollow and staved segments. The thing would have had to fit in boxes and be shipped to some distant destination. (Some assembly required.) Nice job.
When he first started working the rough wood on the lathe. That was the scariest thing I’ve seen for a while. I don’t know about that finish, maybe it looks better in the flesh. Amazing work though by a master.

I have to assume the log that you used was seasoned. How long do you season the logs before you turn them? Is splitting of the piece an issue as it continues to dry?
While the vase is lovely, there was too much of that beautiful tree wasted in its creation. When you look at what is left from what he started with, it's criminal how so much was gone. I love watching wood turning and these artistic people. The amount of waste though in wood turning as in this particular time, is wrong. The tree should never have been cut down in the first place. Yet it was, so it needed, all of it, needed to be respected. Too much waste here. Lovely, yet far too much waste.

Pro tip… always wear gloves and long sleeves when running a wood lathe. Especially on a lathe big enough to turn your entire body in a pretzel. 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
