Bro, you perfectly timed the on and off. When you said it, you did magic. Lights flickered inside the house! Of you said it even more, it would be satisfying. Nobody is talking about that...
If your lights are doing the "dance of death", so are your appliances. First turn off the main breaker to protect everything from those surges. Then watch outside lights (streetlight, neighbor's houses) for the power to become stable. We've experienced enough brief and day-long power outages to now keep flashlights in every room and have UPS units on all the electronics. For our most recent 12 hour outage (caused by 7"+ of snow), I used the solar generator I've been assembling over the past year. Still need a gas generator for central heat but the 540AH battery bank can keep fridge, a few lights, internet, etc going for about 24 hours. If it's not too cold, the gas logs in the fireplace can keep about half the main level of the house comfortable.
all of that flickering could be a sign of big problems at the generation side not being able to supply stable electricity, which could be caused by shorts from fallen trees due to snow.
@@andrewc1199 yeah, because us Floridians had hurricane Ian. And when I go up north for Christmas, I actually hope it snows because I can’t really experience that where I live.
@@idkanymore9590 I've only seen snow once in my life, and that happened when I was visiting my uncle in Atlanta in 2006. I've been to Boston during the winter, but I've never seen it snow there.
What I can guarantee was happening was either at your main/sub power station snow piled on lines causing shorts, or a tree was on the line causing it to ark
That arcing/brownout thing is awful. I once had it during a briefing in an apocalyptic lightning storm at an RAF station in Yorkshire. Lights went off, then every time the OIC tried to speak, the briefing room speaker system would start pouring out deafening 50Hz hum. Not good - it's quite intimidating when the systems we rely on and know for total stability go wrong. Respect for linemen and electricians.
My grandparents had that happen during hurricane Irma, I was about to flip the breaker and just let the generator take over, considering they have thousands of dollars worth of electronics in their house.
I at least watched this video 100 times! My power longest been out for me was the 2013 Ice Storm was out for 4 days! In December! Now I have Emergency lights that came handy in 2 power outages I got a video of!
Same thing happened in Massachusetts! A big storm came through and transformers exploded and caused a 7 day power outage! Happened on October 30th 2011 right around say 2 pm eastern time I believe! And it was a mess everywhere!
That flickering and flashing, if someone hasn't already mentioned it, is phase to phase arcing on the primaries. More often than not phase to ground will trip a cutout or open a recloser due to the load which is when the power completely goes out. I'm surprised with that much arcing on the primaries that at some point you didn't have a voltage sag where you lose a phase. Now those are very interesting, and admittedly a little creepy. Don't believe me? Just try running your microwave during a voltage sag (known in the US lay terms as a brownout due to the lowered voltage causing incandescent lights to glow glow more of a brown being starved for voltage). Okay one other thing. You never want to use pine, pine needles or pine sap in a wood burning fireplace. The residues those put off are an excellent way to start a chimney fire, and the last thing you want is to have no power AND have your house burn down.
@@friendlyneighborhoodcow8776 no it's not. It's an all-in-one desktop PC, but has no power. That's why you buy a battery backup (UPS unit) to allow you to shut it fown without destroying the drive

You might turn off the main power to prevent a surge of power coming into the house a breaking something but if the power is doing that it might be a good sign it shows that it could be a fault switch or fuse on the power lines
Late reply but if the switch the light is wired to is a dimmer then you can set it to middle and the surges work be able to go through the switch to the lights!

Grant, you should get a garage door opener with battery backup so you could still open it electrically without using the emergency release rope. Great idea for long term power outages
4:32 my heart jumped into my stomach. That would have made me poop all over the floor. It also sounds like it came right out of a horror movie. It also looks as if it is those broken lights in the untreated gas station bathrooms.
Looks like there is an arcing fault occurring across some power lines, shorting the system and dropping the voltage. in this position, I'd unplug/turn off all electronic devices, and just leave a light on or something.
once a power out came then the electricity started sending a lot more power and that caused are whole house power to flip and we had to turn the main power breaker off then back on to fix it
1) Turn off all electrical systems during power outage. For one to reduce the load to help it come up again, and also to avoid damage by on-off bursts as you said in the beginning. 2) Don't burn green organic material. It doesn't produce any heat, but hell of a lot of smoke. 3) Do not put a plastic bag over lights. They'll get hot and damaged, the plastic melts.
the generator is not that type of generator to have electricity to power the house he needs like a diesel powered generator for to power his entire house
Also, tips for having gas generators running during po’er outages, make sure that you have plenty of fuel to keep it going for at least a few days, and if it’s a dual fuel system, then make sure that you have as many 20 pound propane tanks full.
I remember back in 2017, the power outages didn’t hit me too hard as I only got 12 hours without power 1 day. Over the days after the power would flicker a bit but it was mostly fine
even though this is 6 years old, that power company must have been trying their absolute hardest to restore electricity to you. If you still live there, have you ever considered having a whole house generator hookup so you don't have to run extention cords everywhere?
4:33 the last beep i the answer from the Control Panel to the Power went out again 😂 Edit: 4:42 I think there is a ghost in your house. 5:20 Satisfying
And the power flicker means that it's windy and it's making the power lines shake like a cord with a short in it. The power will come on within a few days until the streets are safe for electricians can fix the lines and so the snow on the lines can melt a little.
Coming across this a few years later, I have to ask why you didn't just turn off the master switch in the breaker box so the power wouldn't keep coming back on and suddenly go back off
Glad I live here in florida, but still I was without power for nearly 3 days when hurricane irma came through. We just took a car battery out of one of the cars plugged it into a power inverter and used it for charging phones. I also had some of those atomic beam lanterns and flashlights. Kept lantern on all night in case anyone had to get up to go to the bathroom in the night. Individual flashlights to see anywhere else. Those atomic beams are pretty bright. Of course canned food to eat. Only entertainment is what you can get on the radio or if you have enough cell phone/tablet/ portable wifi hotspot battery which is what I was getting my internet through at the time and watching netflix/hulu on either phone or tablet.
The flashing of your lights initially,is a number of pre determined attempts by a recloser,to re energise the line,if a fault is persistent,on the third attempt,it will lock the feeder out, resulting in a prolonged blackout.
