Frankie Avalon's Potato Bug's performance is a little bit of a jab towards the British Invasion. This movie from 1964 is during the period where the British Invasion is in full swing, changing many aspects of the American music scene. Avalon knew his music career was going to come to an end with the British Invasion honing in--a sentiment shared by many American musicians up through this time period. By the time 1965 rolls around, the effects of the British Invasion completely change American culture and music tastes, and well...the rest is history.
Frankie did a very good of playing both roles. There were times I would forget he's doing double duty. It's a shame he didn't go farther as an actor, because he really tried and had a family to support that I think he did film's he should not had wasted time but had to think of others.
What cracks me up is Rickles was put in this goody goody roll --Anyone that had seen him in stand up knows how antagonistic and sarcastic he was. I will bet that crazy wild smile was and attempt to keep it all together in this scene.
Peter Royce Bentley (aka The Potato Bug). Little is known about this British pop star. Surprisingly, even less is known about him in Britain. I think this film was an attempt to introduce Bentley to American audiences. Sadly, Frankie Avalon, a 2nd rate singer who was nowhere near as good as Bentley, seems to have destroyed Bentley's career. A great talent, The Potato Bug is forgotten except for this movie.
There are those who blame Frankie Avalon, but the truth is Bentley couldn't handle the success that came with his appearance in Bikini Beach. Then the Beatles went psychedelic and Bentley wasn't able to change with it. His comeback album "Potato Bug Redux" released in 1982 went nowhere and Bentley sunk into a downward spiral of depression and substance abuse. A Behind the Music episode was planned and scrapped as his story was deemed sad, but otherwise excessively dull.
Frankie played both roles, I am not sure how they did this scene, unless under the wig and fake teeth they just used a double who looked like Frankie as the "potato bug".

Nonsense! Potato Bug has a fake British accent. Avalon doesn't. Potato Bug has long hair and a mustache. Avalon doesn't. They don't even have the same hair colour and Potato Bug has a gap in his teeth. They couldn't be more different even if this movie had had a bigger budget for makeup. Next you'll say Samantha and Serena were both played by Elizabeth Montgomery (the credits on Bewitched clearly state that Serena was played by Pandora Spox)

The Carolyn Jones who played Morticia Addams died many years ago, I believe that she died of Cancer. My first name did come from her though, ( also my Fathers Brother Carl, my Paternal Uncle.)
