Introduction by award-winning filmmaker Louie Schwartzberg, the creator and director of the blockbuster documentary Fantastic Fungi. Plus, a brief montage of mind-blowing fungi images to open the event!
In 2016, a New Yorker profile by famed naturalist Robert Macfarlane introduced the world to one of the most important young thinkers of our age: Merlin Sheldrake. Moving from the labs of Cambridge to the jungles of Central America, this revolutionary plant scientist had a hunch that fungi possess superpowers far beyond the mushrooms we know, however mind-blowing their culinary or psychedelic varieties might be. He discovered that fungi are an ancient underground communication network that undergirds the natural world and offers inspiration for rethinking human society. Merlin’s riveting first book, Entangled Life: How Fungi Make Our Worlds, Change Our Minds & Shape Our Futures, has become an instant classic of nature and philosophy - a work of rigorous science and poetic expression, drawing us into the mystery and meaning of this most magical life form.
In our live conversation, Merlin and bestselling nature and culture writer Michael Pollan (How to Change Your Mind, The Omnivore’s Dilemma) will delve into “The Wood Wide Web”: an enchanting “superorganism” whose secrets just might save the world. This event is for everyone who believes that wonder still exists and hope can be found in the unlikeliest places: around us, under us, even inside us. You’ll come away with a sense of awe for “life’s labyrinths,” in Merlin’s words, where “some of the vexed hierarchies that underpin modern thought start to soften.”
    Speakers:
Merlin Sheldrake, Entangled Life: How Fungi Make Our Worlds, Change Our Minds and Shape Our Futures
Michael Pollan, How to Change Your Mind: What the New Science of Psychedelics Teaches Us About Consciousness, Dying, Addiction, Depression, and Transcendence
    Louie Schwartzberg, Fantastic Fungi (documentary)

What a wonderful time to be alive, to watch young geniuses like Merlin explore and explain a very fundamental force of nature that modern society is only now beginning to truly understand. You know how cool that is?? This is a whole field of science...RIGHT HERE, literally woven in the bones of our ancestors, just begging to be understood and deeply known. In my opinion, this is on par with the discovery of the atom, or the heliocentric model. I'm very pleased we have a poetic explorer, and rigorous mind like Merlin to help guide the way. As a middle school science teacher, I devour this wonderment and try my best to present it to my kids. Thanks for the material ❤

I think alot of what is discussed here in part demonstrates how Western Science seems to have a hard time understanding and articulating the cooperative / mutually dependent relationships that natural science continues to observes in nature (it just doesn't fit into Western individualistic ideology very well). However, these ideas do seem to join up very well with the philosophy, theory, and thought of American Indigenous cultures. I recomend this book for an interesting read that thoroughly discusses this view: Pierotti, Raymond. Indigenous Knowledge, Ecology, and Evolutionary Biology, 2010.

A mushroom walks into a bar, says to the bartender, "Gimme a beer."
The bartender says, "Get out! I can't serve you."
The mushroom says, "Why not? I'm a fun guy."

bewitched by the swirling tapestry of night
    stars
    soar thorough uncharted seas
    my heart
    soars
in love with the enchantment of love
    twirling reflections
    never apart
    never joined
    no wholeness exists
    nor emptiness
    love is unthinkable
    ungraspable
we do not know what it is
perhaps that is its beauty and wonder
    what is a flower?
what is this song pouring through your heart?
where are the words where are the notes?
on the staves in the air on the wind in your ears your eyes your gut
    your heart?
no longer trying to drink the words
    the words drink you
and you become a sound spell
    echoes of echoes
    drifting through galaxies of wonder
what is the taste of these words
    …the texture
what is the magical shape of sound
when you peel off its skin?

Why would fungi give us psilocybin? What’s in it for them? Maybe they are just giving us a gift. Maybe they just want us to join them in an altered consciousness that makes us happy.
