I would have loved a flashback of how Kyah plotted and planned Chases "accident."

Yes! This is what I was anticipating in the movie. I feel like the Firefly poem in the book gave me that imagery of her carrying out the murder that the movie never did. Was she the 'young man' in disguise on the bus?

    • @thealchemist5761
      @thealchemist5761 2 роки тому +2

@@redhot654 She had to be, I never read the book but the movie sort of assumes that we have. I remember tate trying to give her his jacket I'm not sure if she took it but she did take the cap and I'm assuming those are the fibers they found on chases clothes but the movie never shows the bus scene so I'm not sure why they bothered to include it in the movie if they weren't gonna show her wearing it on the bus dressed as a guy.

Well we are basically explained to how she did it in the court and I don't think we need a direct show of it. It simply wouldn't fit the movie or her character.

You’re right, a mini-series would have been perfect. In order to understand the backstories, societal prejudices, impactful relationships, and beautiful scenery, the movie required more details.

Her character is that typical romance literary trope: she's doesn't look like the other girls; she's the most beautiful and doesn't know it; her peers tear her down because they are intimidated by her beauty. Her living in the wild made me think of Jodie Foster in Nell. Great review and I love the new intro 🖤🖤🖤

Just hearing you talk about the black folks in the movie made me somewhat emotional. And I think it made you emotional because you have seen that over and over again. The level that black ppl continue to bring their full humanity to such a cruel and hostile environment is nothing less than Divine.

The book does go into detail about Kya being educated by Mabel on periods, sex etc. I agree that it should have been a mini series. It felt very rushed, which kind of took away from the calm nature backdrop that is basically the second main character of the story.

“People forget about the creatures that live in shells” tons of symbolism in that statement. She is like a creature living in a shell and feels forgotten about .

She also ran away from the cops as soon as they came for her. That kind of gave away that she was responsible or at least saw what happened, I think. Great points you guys made about her saying “I can’t stay here” and not saying she didn’t do it

Also, the reveal in the book is made so much more dramatic with a poem Kya wrote under a false name. That whole storyline was cut for time but the poem is absolutely haunting as a reveal of what she did, how, and why.

I just finished this movie and I had so many mixed emotions. I’m glad I stumbled upon your channel, because you two brought up some very good points without undermining things that I enjoyed about the movie. I loved her relationship with Tate, as I am currently in a similar situation where I left someone to do something I’ve always wanted to do, but now she’s moved on and I feel like I’ve lost the love of my life. That feeling of having what you thought you wanted but none of it mattered if you can’t share it with the one person you cared most about in the world broke me emotionally during this film and it made me feel like not only was I not alone, but that my feelings are justified.
All of that being said, I agree that the relationship between the African American couple and Kya could have been more impactful if they had portrayed a stronger sense as to what they were going through in that time and compared it to the way Kya was treated as an “other” and an outcast. It would have added depth to those relationships. That being said, it goes to show how impactful those characters were with how little screen time they had that I couldn’t help but cry when they went to the man’s funeral. I truly felt the grief that she had just lost her father, and typing it out now is making me emotional so I’m going to stop.
Great review of this film and I will be subscribing to hear more!

Kya is named as the prime suspect in Chase's murder after his body is found at the base of an abandoned fire tower. The local sheriff is convinced Kya is the culprit based on two clues found at the scene of the crime.
Clue one? Red wool fibers, found on Chase's clothing. Kya had a hat that was made from red wool.
Clue two? Chase's shell necklace was missing when authorities discovered his body. The shell necklace is particularly crucial because not only was it a gift from Kya, but Chase's mother reported that he was wearing it the night he was killed. So someone must've taken it after Chase was murdered.
The book's greatest plot twist is the late reveal that Kya was the killer. Naturally, we only find this out after Kya dies.
Let's add a bit more context to Kya's motive. At one point when Chase was still alive, he attempted to rape Kya. She managed to fend him off, but didn't report the incident. It was the 1960s, after all. Kya's primary concern was that the townspeople would judge her for Chase's actions. After that incident, Kya genuinely feared for her safety around Chase.

I really hated how they romanticized teenage love over career/education. Tate absolutely should've went off to college & taken those grants. I dont get why they made it seem like a one or the other situation, they could've just had a long distance relationship. Had he not gone, he would've resented her ass & lost out on what seemed like a career he was really passionate about. Overall I liked the film, but yeah, bits & pieces were off. I would've loved to see this as a a mini series.

I just realized that Delia Owens went viral last year bc people found out she moved to africa to kill poachers (ie black people). she got kicked out, went back to the u.s then went on to write about someone getting away with murder in the wilderness. um...

    • @HM8463-z3b

Because careers and jobs aren’t everything. When you die your not going to be thinking about how awesome your career was your going to think about that one relationship that made everything worth it. That made you want to spend every second with them that makes you feel incomplete and at a total loss when they do pass over. That’s my perspective I respect that it’s not yours but it’s mine. In the end what makes life worthwhile is love and the relationships you made in it. That’s my perspective.

So I read the book and I think the title is actually fitting. They talk about how you need absolute quiet, deep in the marsh to hear the crawdads sing and it represents how Chase's murder is a secret only the marsh knows because Tate burned all the evidence. In the book they also talk about how Kya's nickname, Marsh Girl was not an insult but her identity. She was raised by the marsh and needs the marsh which is why she couldn't bear to be in jail.

Kickin ass and taking names. Heard that many times where I am from. I haven’t read this book. I always wanted to just haven’t done it. The author was on CBS Sunday morning. The only real selling point for me to see this is David Strahan. I like Daisy from Fresh. I was shocked when I heard her speak with an English accent. The author came across kinda flakey. But, it just didn’t seem very good. But, what do I know? It a NY Times bestseller list FOREVER. Great review per usual. I really appreciate y’all’s reviews. As far as the title goes "where the crawdads sings" this is what drew me to this story. I have just finished the book, going to go see the movie today. 'where the crawdad sings" means go so deep in the swamp to hide, that it is so silent that you can hear the crawdads sing. Since you can't really hear crawdads sing, it is saying go that deep where it is that silent. Again, the title is what made me buy the book and in turn then go see the movie.

    • @cynthiawolfe3419

I agree with you 100%! The title is what pulled me in. I just saw the movie on a plane but missed the ending so I watched it while on a cruise. I later bought the book at the airport and read it in a couple of days, then watched the movie, yet again. I loved the mystery behind the murder and I didn't feel there wasn't a need for every detail of how she did it. It has been much criticism of the movie but I think they did a remarkable job translating the book to the screen. The Cinematography is exquisite! A wonderful, conglomeration of women pulled off an amazing story, IMO. I love a good, solid, moody storyline that takes place in the middle of a mysterious swamp/marsh land, mixed with love and mystery. It had us talking at the end.

Great review!!! Love how you structure your reviews they're so immersive! I agree with what you said about wanting to hear more about the trial and the evidence (more like a Poirot ex: Agatha Christie's Sad cypress movie with David Suchet). I read the novel and really didn't enjoy it (a lot of the issues that you brought up are very much present in the book), although they did explain how she was seen out of town while they murder was taking place in the book. I was hoping maybe the movie would be more cohesive but I think I'll skip this one! :)

I loved this movie ! It’s one of my favourites . All the actors were incredible . Harris Dickerson has that “ it “ factor .

Oh, something out-of-the-ordinary premise. Did not watch any trailer on purpose, for this one! I've heard of Crawdads, from New Orleans LOL! Liked your views on this little girl's life from a dysfunctional family background. Her 'achievements' and crime, defined who she was in the end. A subject on nature versus nurture perhaps? Would watch this like Huckleberry Finn!

Isn’t ‘where the crawdads sing” like an idiom for really far away where you’ll never be found. Like Timbuktu (which I know is a real place).

This is a good review. I read the book for a book discussion, and the group decided that the book was more suited as a movie. However, the book is the same with moving back and forth between present and past. The nature writing is the strongest part of the book, and the tropes of romance and murder mystery. I thought a great screenwriter would have flushed out the story and characters, but it seems that it didn't happen. The problems with the book are carried into the movie.

I just finished the book and am going to see the movie today. I have been watching a bunch of reviews before seeing the movie. From all the reviews I would agree with your above statement. I found that the book was choppy as well, however I still really enjoyed it. Enjoyed the deeper meanings and the feel of the nature and the swamp. If it didn't have that ending at the very last few pages though, it would have left me disappointed.

I enjoyed first match not knowing it was the same director. So I'm sure I'll like this. And I'm surprised you haven't read this one nick!
