When I did CQ at my unit, it was an unwritten rule that we both took extended breaks. The E5 would always let me go sleep at my barracks room for a few hours even our commanders knew about this.

    • @IvanhoeWolfe-zn6fc
      @IvanhoeWolfe-zn6fc 3 місяці тому

Yeah some 1sg and CO were ok with that.
      And some were jerks.
Back when I was a runner. I had CQs that sleep during the day. Then made sure you stayed up all night.
When I was CQ I don't recall ever getting sleep during the day. But I always let my runner. " Go check the barracks" and tell them to be back like 4 hours later.
I only recall a staff duty question where my runner was once. He waited like an hour for my runner to return. And wouldn't you know it. The log said 5 minutes after he left my runner came back and had vehical problems.
But really he did come back for a couple hours.

Good day, wow, as a old cook 1988-1992 never did CQ but I did many 24 and 30 hrs shifts. Most of those hours were in the field. I spent a Thanksgiving up for 28 hr. Cook dinner, then cook the Thanksgiving meat, then I cook breakfast and Thanksgiving lunch. Then I got to go to bed. Fantastic video.

@@thomasedwards2754 thanks for sharing. As a cook I have had to do cq quite a few times but only when I was not assigned to the dfac at those moments. Same with staff duty.
The last time I was in the field was really stupid because higher ups would "hey you" any lower enlisted for anything stupid they could think of because those higher ups seemingly had nothing better to do. So they pulled some of the lower enlisted cooks, including myself, to go dig a hole and just sit in the hole and watch a 240bravo gun for eight hours a day, even though we were cooks and had been working since 0300, and taking any of us away would impede the meal preparation.
Yeah Im so glad I joined Army instead of Air Force where you probably would still do some dumb stuff but not nearly as ridiculous as Army

Fun fact: if you enlist as a paralegal (27D), you don’t have to do CQ and staff duty per AR 27-1. The reason for this because paralegals are the ones helping process adverse actions such as Article 15s, GOMORs, etc. and it wouldn’t be a good idea for paralegals to be witnesses to incidents that they could see during CQ/SD.
Plus paralegals also usually have a better QOL than most soldiers since they’re typically assigned at the battalion level or higher. They don’t typically get assigned to a line unit.

    • @golfery5119
      @golfery5119 3 місяці тому

I tried to reclass to 27d and it was looking good until the retention people caught that I have a permanent hearing profile and require hearing aids. It hurt that I was disqualified.
But I got a question anyway about 27d with other Army things like the field, a 27d is still in the Army, not the Air Force, so I would expect sone 27d to still have to go to the field. But what the hell would a 27d even do in the field?

    • @usernamealreadytaken770
      @usernamealreadytaken770 3 місяці тому

@@golfery5119 Depends on the job. Typically those in a military justice (UCMJ) position typically don’t go to the field since military justice is a big priority and courts martial will happen even during field exercises. Paralegals are on both the trial counsel (prosecution) side and defense side. There’s even paralegals working as court reporters for the judge.
For administrative and national security law positions, paralegals are much more likely to go to the field for staff exercises. They help the JAG officer with research on federal law and regulations (typically DoD and Army regs) as well as help with drafting documents. So just whenever a JAG officer and other staff soldiers/officers need to be in the field is when a paralegal will go.

This didn't on CQ, but happened while on fireguard during BT. The barracks was shaped like an H. 1st and 2nd squad on side 3rd and 4th on the other side Latrine in the middle. I heard a scream from the other side of the barracks. I run over there and see what's is happening. There was a sleepwalking recruit pissing on another recruit while the poor guy was in his bunk.

We had an unwritten rule that you could take 1-2 hours to rest. Someone (the runner) thought it was an official rule and told the CQ he was going to go to his room to sleep. The CQ said "no". He complained to the 1SG who laughed him out of his office.

Wasn't like years before when floors were high wax buff.
About 93-4 a memo came around and high wax floors were stopped at permanent party Ft. Leonardwood. Then I reclassed into a medical MOS. During training in bravo school high wax floor
But in my advanced Medical MOS. Since I was an NCO I was in different barracks. It was a little strange because I wasn't allowed in the IAIT barracks. But I believed they had high wax.
But those with me. There was no wax floors.
My units after had wax floors. But not like the old days.

You should do a video for conditional releases, breaks in service, Guard/Reserves to active, break in service and all things related to prior service contracts. No one, not even the MEPS liaisons, knew much about prior service. I had to do a lot more research than when I first joined the Army, which was made more difficult by the varying accounts and general lack of information.

It's honestly not that bad. I'm with 1st cav 6-9 Fort Cavazos.
Realistically we are allowed to bring our game consoles sometimes. Most times guys who have extra duty pull all the Dirty Work so you won't have too and the work you do if you have too is not much. It's simple cleaning, running to Motorpool to unlock gates and assisting other soldiers with getting back into their rooms if they get locked out. Honestly I don'tind CQ, you also get the next day off as recovery. Thursday CQ is the best. You get Friday Saturday and Sunday.
It's not the worst thing ever. Until you have to pull CQ for Headquarters

I was DNCO( Duty NCO ) for my barracks in the Marine Corps. I was a Corporal. We had a PFC with the same last name as me. No relation by the way. I got a phone call from the staff duty saying that PFC Snuffy was picked up in town for jaywalking, resisting arrest, assault on a police officer, and more. I had to escort him to the hospital on base to get a brig physical, then escort him to the brig, alongside my staff duty for the night. It was quite the adventure for me.

I hated doing 24 hour duty especially when coming out of the field. Every unit I was at started the CQ/Staff Duty at the end of the business day until the start of the next business day. Except weekends and Holidays.
The Worst time I did staff duty in Germany (This was Division Artillery Staff Duty) It was the night of the Lockerbie Pan Am Bombing. I had to contact all of out units to see if we had any of our people on the flight. And yep, One of our Lieutenants was going home on Christmas Leave and was on that flight. (The way it worked is we had Artillery units at several locations in Germany not located with the division HQ, Really the whole division was spread out over several locations. So there was a LOT of time on the phone talking to the units to get a people count.)
That Night Sucked Real Bad. As it happened it was my first time pulling Staff Duty at that unit, having been newly arrived to Germany. December 1987
The other times pulling duty really sucked is when you are pulling duty and you unit gets called on alert. All of a sudden no day off after pulling duty. You are dragging ass doing the stuff you need to do for an alert. At that time in Germany Alerts were mandatory at least once a month.
    There were 3 different types.
Just a recall where everyone had to report to the unit within the specified time frame -Usually 2 hours. Those recalls always took place at 0500.
2nd type Full recall, prep Draw Weapons and sensitive items, Do everything to move and do communication checks, and line up to move out.
3rd All of the above and actually roll out and go on a road march. Sometimes just a few miles, sometimes go on a field exercise, a couple of times we went to our Ammunition Pickup, and then deployed to what our forward positions would be if the balloon went up. Pulling duty before that type REALLY SUCKED

In the 80s 90s CQ was always a CQ (NCO) and a runner E1-E4.
The runner started between 0600 to 0900 depending where I was.
The CQ would began after End of Day formation.
Now a lot of NCO would go home to sleep during the day.
A tiny few CQ would allow thier runner to get a couple hours of sleep during the night. But most would not.
It always made me mad when a NCO WOULD sleep during the day and play rock with his runner. Making runner stay up.
When I was CQ i couldnt get that sleep during the day. Never the less i let my runner caight some Zs
One more thing E6 rarely but did pull CQ.
    Staff duty.
Never seen below E5 pull it.
But still you had a runner/ driver that was E1-E4.
However the runner / driver was allowed to sleep. It was always car naps between. But i dont know of any my units did let sleep.
Understand you are driving every 2 to 4 hours which mean maybe 30 minutes to 2 hours of sleep.
Now dont get that wrong. My last batt CO was a real Cant and she wanted to know just where the driver was. And i told her some line.
The duties stink. But its really wasnt that bad.
Oh and our CQ was always in the compamy. Not in barracks.
But i did hear of some in barracks at other places.
Also remember this was 20 plus years ago. So things may of changed.
But staff duty was basicly checking security of motorpools and checking CQs at thier companies.
I only recall doing staff duty 3 tines. Once as a driver in late 80s maybe it was 1990 and twice in early 2000s .

Weekend duty was 09:00 to 09:00, with Saturday sucking the most. 🥱 ☎️

This might be another one of those things about the Army, not the military period, but the Army that is unique to the Army.
I don't know about the Marines and Navy but apparently the Air Force doesnt make its enlisted people do 24 hour CQ duty. Ive heard from many sources that someone in the AF, if they do have to do such duty, only do it for 12 hours, not a whole 24 like the Army does.
