  • I launched my kayak out of Mission Bay San Diego (for the first time) to target some bay bass. I was using 6 Lb test with a 1/4 oz jig head and a three inch gulp shrimp. For my first time I did well. Please leave any tips for bay bass or halibuts bellow. Thanks!

Excellent choice of lures-gulp always works wonders-but I've found that unpainted round and darter jig heads work even better than painted ones. 6lb test is just a bit light, in case of a big calico bass or halibut I err on the side of caution with 8 or 10lb. Also, bass and halibut feed best during a strong tidal movement, incoming or outgoing. Good luck out there!
