I got my first 5k this year, I'll be (hopefully) completeing my first 10k on Sunday (I signed up for a race), I can tell you the journey from 1-2 to 5k was the hardest for me, it was when I had to learn how to actually breathe and what actually ment to run slowly. Once I got it I felt so proud of myself and so confident I could basically run any distance I want, I'm sure you'll feel the same :) Just a tip: my first ever 5k run I didn't think I could make it, I had run 3.5-4k for a couple of weeks prior to that, one day I just told my partner I was going to try the 5k no matter how long it took, no matter if I needed to stop to catch my breath for a few seconds, just give it a solid try. Turns out it felt easier than I thought and I could make it in one go, you got this!
It's all relative - it's hard to do sometimes, but try not to compare yourself to everyone else - just try to focus on your own goal and good luck!!! You'll get there. It's said a lot, but it's true 'comparison is the thief of joy'.
Having never run further than 15k in my life, currently being pretty overweight and doing zero running for the last 2 years I’m currently 6 weeks into training for the Manchester marathon in April. In the tough times I have often thought to myself, what idiot decides to start training for a marathon going into winter. Thank you for this video and has given me a new perspective for those moments I don’t want to go out in the cold and I can look at what an opportunity it is to overcome greater adversity.
Just finished my first 100 miler. I’m legally blind and rolled my ankle in the first 40 miles. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. And a strong why was key.
My goal this winter is to go on my first ever bulking fase, as a woman it feels daunting to let myself gain weight and not freek out when I see the scale go up or clothes fit differently, that'll be my mental mountain to climb this year, hope I make it to the top.
“Ego will get you to the start line. But wont get you to the finish line” great mindset. The mindset for me is to work hard while no one else is watching. Set myself up for next year by building a solid foundation. Measuring my sleep and recovery a lot more and take solid steps toward a 5k time of 20:00. Also, focus on more zone 2 training.
Aiming to run a sub 4 hour marathon at the end of May (Edinburgh). Currently up to 30km on my long run and 53km total weekly distance, with 4 runs per week, one of which is a speed session.
It's all a matter of perspective. Training ist easy, quieting the mind and getting the needed rest is hard. Running an ultra seems like light work, when compared to psychological goals, such as finding real happiness.
My next goal is to get down to a 20 minute 5k (can currently do a 23 min one) while slowly building muscle mass. Not got any races coming up until October next year, so I’m trying to improve my “baseline” as much as I can.
I’m working on what I call project Six Two Six aka a sub 40 10K. I have set an unreasonable goal given my current conditioning, but I am pushing myself as hard as I can for 6 months to see just how far I can come.
Thanks for this and the many videos of yours I've watched for a while. 2024 has been hard mentally. Some story for those interested, and maybe prevent some from repeating my mistakes. First, I've always been quite active, I used to practice and teach martial arts for more than 10 years, since I was 14yo, now 32. Back to 2024, I was registered to a 40km 2300 vertical ascent for the beginning of March. I used to run regularly but without much volume never going beyond 8 to 10km trying to be fitter so I could move freely while in the mountains doing photography with heavy equipment. From November 2023 I ramped up training and volume following a training program I found. Now this program was for 50km trail running and seemed fitting for the task. It had me running mostly 6 days a week. I totalled 135km in December and 180km in January. As I remember it, I felt great, not missing a day (except from a week end of December when I fell ill big time, maybe a sign I should have listened to) but after the fact, people told me I was on edge and tense. Finally, end of January, on a normal run on a steep descent, I heard and felt a big crack in my hip. Fast forward 2 month of masked pain (only certain movements) and trying to run a bit while the doctor thought it was a muscle or tendon problem, an MRI revealed I broke my ischio-pubic bone. Further exams showed I have a lower bone density than normal and that surely didn't help. I am now back to training and I registered again to the same race. Now, the fear of reproducing the same mistakes is daunting but I have grown (I hope). I am listening much more to what my body has to say. I'm also trying to approach programs not as an absolute rule I have to follow if I want to cross that finish line but just as guidance. What take aways are there in that? Well, to me it would be that the mind can be very strong, maybe sometimes too much (I once ended 24h in the hospital after my first gym training session when the instructor had us doing only biceps work, I hadn't drink much but still went to failure at every single exercice and ended up with a rhabdomyolysis) Be strong, keep the motivation high, let yourself be invigorated by such models as Fergus and his great videos but listen to your body. Also, research as much as you can the thing you want to challenge yourself with so you don't skip steps. Sorry for the long post, that might have been an outlet for me to express my frustration and fear. Take care everyone and I hope this time I'll manage to at least get to the start line.
I want to be able to frontcrawl 1500 m unbroken this winter. I never learned that as a child. I started only beinh able to do 25 m and than I was out of breath. But I made huge improvments the last weeks. Last time I did multiple sets of 100 m. The goal is to do an olympic Triathlon next July.
It'll be my summer here in New Zealand but I'm keen to use your winter as round one of two. I hope to take what I learn and build on it in my real winter, leading to a 50km trail run at the end of it. I've got about 8kg of excess me and some grief to work off along the way.
Hey! Appreciate the videos lots! I find it funny though that wintering here in Finland is a whole nother level! Running with spiked shoes in -10-20° on the ice and snow :D
Thank you for sharing that one! There are a few things… The major goal is to align myself with my purpose again. Another one is to run a 3:33 Marathon on 6. April. 🎯
My winter goal is a 70k ultra from Brecon to Cardiff on 16th February. Aiming to get under 8 hours. First there's a 55k mountain ultra in December though!
Great. I love this concept. Do any of your plans focus on cycling? I can’t run while I recover from an Achilles injury, but have discovered that cycling is amazing! Both outdoor and zwift. So I’m looking for a strength training/ cycling hybrid plan to follow…
I am doing the Pen and Paper Strength App's program "Squatober", but in November. Then I will do their "Deadcember", and then their "Benchuary". After that I am going to get that Rogue 1000 pound shirt by hitting a 1000 pound total across those three lifts in one hour. Happy Training to you all, and best of luck with your backyard Ultra!
I love this concept! Honestly thinking about participating in the Wintering and the Backyard Ultra. Ran the West Highland Way in March within two days (thanks for the inspiration!), ran a very hilly 75km Ultramarathon in the Summer and just attempted to run the 340km Southern Upland Way mid Octobre (really NOT recommended, I almost drowned in the scottish swamps). But I really want to attempt a 100km Ultra next year.
@ferguscrawley95 hahaha, decided I wasn't ready for the sudden drop in Temps to sit on the bike for 3hr so got changed and went for a 10km slow jog instead. 😅
After many many half marathons, I am currently training for my first full marathon in April. All while trying to hang on to some muscle. Also starting to lean towards running an ultra after that.
@ferguscrawley95 running Brighton marathon next year. I've run the half before. A lot of fun and some more interesting terrain the my usual in Cambridge
My big goal this winter is running my first official Ultra trail marathon 160 k (Bello Gallico). I hope i make it, i'm currently fighting a small knee and achilles injury. :)
I want to be able to run a half Marathon by the end of Jan currently running up to 10k a couple of times a week and turbo trainer 20-40k 1-2 times a week
@@ferguscrawley95 thanks Fergus I watch your Videos etc, and it soars me on to be part time Athlete 😀,, I. Almost did my first triathlon this September but had to pull out due to an operation I had!! We’re working on a potential idea for people to join us in one place in March, but the mechanic will be virtual (maybe with an in person option to be developed)!
If you're ready to build your resilience this winter, then check out all the details and register here: www.omnia-performance.com/the-wintering-1
Everyone here is doing marathons and ultras. I just want to get my first 5k… and I will be so proud of it :)
Everyone doing the marathons and ultras once said “I just want to get my first 5k” 😂😂
In my mind the first 5k are the hardest. Believe in yourself and the feelings after completing the 5k will be amazing
And that is just as awesome as any other distance! All the best - come back to this comment and let us all know once you’ve conquered it 🤝

Well done on embracing the fear with it! All the best 🤝
We need this in Australia and everywhere else in the Southern hemisphere, in 6 months time. Love the concept.
We had several Australians join us last year regardless - and besides, some SH winter climates are my summer haha!

To go skiing for the first time in January. Hit a squat PB of 150kg, currently at 120kg. Improve cycling fitness for some big rides next summer

Best description of changing your Mindset out there!
Love it
Thanks for watching!
I've got 2 goals this winter: Run a sub 20 min 5K (my PB is 20:35 from 2 yrs ago) and run a half marathon. Lets do this.
Aiming for a half marathon at the end of March, coming back from injury and very little running
my goals for this winter is to hit 100kg+ bench press, 120kg+ squat and 140kg+ dead lift while maintaining my cardio
I need a summering. Winter training is the best training.
Haha we never really get that in Scotland tbf…
My goal is to build up to a 5k whilst pushing myself within my university course. To balance both aspects and enjoy all the ups and downs ahead.
Great stuff, all the best!

To get better at running up hills.
Was being passed by everyone during races.
Haha but can you drop them on the flats/downhills?
I am going into the wilderness in may, for 3 month! I want to be as fit, strong and maybe fat as possible for this :D
First Marathon on Feb. 16th in Austin, TX.
Send it! All the best 🫡
As I sit, procrastinating about going out for a chilly 3 hour zone 2 ride...this was just what I needed to push me out the door.
Great to hear it had an impact! Enjoy your ride 🤝 report back here.

here for the 3rd wintering season ill be watching
Legend, LFG!
Winter target, to be ready for first Murph in May.

Want to run a sub 2 hour half marathon without stopping by February and I'm going to enter a half mara race for the Spring :)
Very good advice again, thank you. 🙏
Thanks for watching!
After many many half marathons, I am currently training for my first full marathon in April. All while trying to hang on to some muscle. Also starting to lean towards running an ultra after that.
Sounds great my man, all the best! Which marathon you hitting?
@ferguscrawley95 running Brighton marathon next year. I've run the half before. A lot of fun and some more interesting terrain the my usual in Cambridge
Sub 4hour marathon in or around april and a 50k trailrun in on January 26th with a group of mates!
Sounds great! All the best with your training
I’m good
bro; i’m gonna chill and enjoy myself like a based epicurean
Would it be possible for you to create a playlist of the previous wintering seasons?
P.s. this is awesome. The goal for this winter needs thinking.
DONE! Best of luck with your winter goals 🤝
@ferguscrawley95 wonderful, thank you! And thank you! 🙌
My big goal this winter is running my first official Ultra trail marathon 160 k (Bello Gallico). I hope i make it, i'm currently fighting a small knee and achilles injury. :)
Class! All the best with your injury management and training!
London Marathon 27th April, first ever road marathon
Very cool, enjoy the entire experience! Best of luck.
@ many thanks
So much FOMO. I'm waiting for the physio to get me back to running but it's not going to happen in time to join this year :(
I would like to just get stronger, become Hybrid like yourself, so i suppose my first goal would be to run a 10k? and bench press 100kg?
Awesome! What timelines we working to?
I’d say before summer next year? June time
WHO'S GONNA CARRY THE BOATS Akira The Don
Climb mont blanc next juli/august.
Class! Enjoy!
The best way I find to cope with the winter training in the UK is to fuck off to Lanzarote for 3 weeks and train arse off in the sun! 😂
Hahaha a very viable plan!
I want to be able to run a half Marathon by the end of Jan currently running up to 10k a couple of times a week and turbo trainer 20-40k 1-2 times a week
All the best with your training! Sounds like the Wintering could work well for you... 👀

All the best sir!
Will there be a real life ultra with yourselves or all virtual?
We’re working on a potential idea for people to join us in one place in March, but the mechanic will be virtual (maybe with an in person option to be developed)!
@ hi the mechanic? ‘Majority?’ I was aiming for ultra at the start of March 4 weeks before. Enough recovery time?
I reckon Omnia caps would sell like hot cakes...

Hi Gary, strange! Which browser are you on?
Love the wintering. But don’t love winter
I typically love your videos, but why it is mentally so hard to watch any kind of sport related vidoes while being injured
If it makes you feel better I’m fairly injured at the moment - video update on that coming next week!
