I'm so glad I found your channel! I was born in Athens and adopted at 3 months. My adopted mom's whole side of the family is from Crete and my grandmother had a house in Sissi. They also had Land in Vrahassi with olive trees and I remember my aunt and mom always bringing home those giant metal containers with olive oil in them. We used to go every summer
Thank you so much Anne and thank you for sharing your story…. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
I just wanted you to know that, since my favorite local Greek restaurant just closed recently and I decided to start learning how to cook this stuff on my own, I just tried your recipe and was amazed at how well this came out. I was in the Air Force in Greece for almost 3 years back in the 1960s. The souvlaki I used to have and enjoy, was from a little wheeled cart. They were cut much smaller that those made here. The skewers were about 8 inches long. The key is that they are grilled over charcoal. Do not use a gas grill.
The souvlaki was then put on to a 6 inch grilled pitta with chopped onlion and tomatoes and a sprinkle of salt. Then cam the magic, when the olive oil and lemon was put right on the prepared souvlaki.. Delicious! I lived on those things.
I remember the small place I used to eat at in Glyfada back in the middle 70's called Mackies.....He would serve mine with Tzatziki and pita....I could eat those all day long...........I just loved them....
Maki’s May. It be there anymore BUT there are a few other really good places....
@@KensGreekTable His place was close to the base, and we could get there and bring it back for dinner pretty quickly. I agree with you about other places. I didn't have any meals that weren't good....I can't think of any Greek food dish that I didn't absolutely love...
Hard to have a bad Greek meal Steve....
My father was in the army and we were stationed at Hellenikon Air Base near Athens for 3 years. We ate Souvlaki at least 2x a week. My father would bring home what I felt like was a ton on the sticks, and he liked what we called Souvlaki pancakes (on Pita Bread). We ate that food like there was no tomorrow. That was back in 1980-1983. Man what great memories and culture. I loved Easter and the cracking of the eggs.
Perfect video. Simple, no nonsense and that grill is fantastic! Thanks Ken
@danielchristmas6967
"Simple, no nonsense." It's an incredibly easy recipe with barely any ingredients and the video is nearly 14 minutes long!
Great Video Ken and fantastic food Thank You
In '76 I was staying with friends in Voula and went to Glayfada almost daily. There was a little open. air market and that's where I had Souvlaki for the first time and I love it. In one of the restaurants I used to go to I was mesmerised by the whole chickens roasting on a rotating spit in a glass oven and the aroma of lemon & herbs was amazing - we had nothing like that at home. Thank you for sharing your recipes, you have a new follower. Best wishes from 🏴
Thank you so much Lynn and welcome!!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 I love hearing stories like yours. Unfortunately because of the current situation here in Greece, I will not have the amazing opportunity to stay in Glyfada because most hotels are still closed here. Oh well, I’ll hopefully be back in a couple of months....
My first time was on the train from Athens to corfu. In 81.
Real lamb though.
I do it all the time now.
Fantastic video Ken. Really looking forward to making Souvlaki with your recipe. Also looking forward to sharing the Souvlaki with family and friends. Thanks Ken.
Thank you John for your comment and kind words!!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 Very much appreciated. Good luck with the recipe and let me know how it turns out.... 👍💪✌️🙌
I'll definitely let you know. Thanks again Ken.
Ken this is awesome and thank you for sharing this. I am going to make this tonight
Thanks very much Doug!!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Thanks Ken - great tips! And worked out really well tonight on my gas bbq grill. A little dry, but I was being over cautious not to undercook...
Hey Brandon, thank you for your comment and kind words!!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 No biggie at all. Practice makes perfect. But when it comes to pork, better to overlook a bit than undercook IMHO....
Mother of God mate, that looks delicious. I can't wait visit Greece again, one of the reasons is food for sure. Greetings from Vienna from an orthodox brother.
Ken Thank you for the very good video. Lovely with the Greek music for the cooking atmosphere. I am English with many good Greek friends here in sunny Great Yarmouth.

many thanks! I am currently in Greece and have been looking for recipes. Yours looks good.
Thanks very much!!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Looks awesome going to try tomorrow thanks
I have been taught to use wood cutting boards because the wood has natural enzymes that kill bacteria. Plastic can get cuts in it that hold bacteria even after washing..
But, his pork looks delicious anyway. Can't wait to try it.
Roll on springtime, here comes the souvlaki, banging recipe Ken, top man, cheers👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you!!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Thanks Ken. Very informative video/ Good editing also.

Greetings from germany....
PS: looking forward to a original pita recipe video ;)
Hey Germany:-)))))
Thank YOU for your comments!!! There is a pita video in the works which should be coming out later this year. It will include regular pita and a special low carb recipe as well... Good luck and keep cooking!!! 👍🙏🏼💪
Cheers,
Ken🇨🇦
Loved your video. Having been a butcher in my youth, I can tell you this, wood cutting boards are fine as long as they are cleaned well. Wood has a natural tendency to release bacteria from it's surface when cleaned. It does not stick on. As for marinating, Not more than an hour or so in the lemon juice, the acid in the juice will start to cook the meat ending up making it tougher.
👍👍👍
OPA, GIA SOU!!!! Great Videos! :)
Thank you!!!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
I just came across your channel. this is a great time to be cooking Greek foods.

Sensational love it
Hi Ken, Thank You! I followed your perfect method exactly for Pork Souvlaki last weekend & OMG I was so pleased with the end result, everyone commented on the perfect taste & wonderful smell of the Oregano that to me is the aroma that always reminds me of Greece! I even made your version of Tzatziki that also went down fantastic with everyone including myself....
I now remember the name of the dish I was trying to remember, it's Sofrito a local dish from Corfu (Kirkira) Steak with lots of garlic, parsley, red or white wine al fried first then boiled for 1 hour 15 mins, do you know this dish? Would be great to see a video of your version one day! Thanks again
Thank you so much Phil!!!🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 Your comments are very much appreciated. As for the sofrito, I’ll definitely look into it....
Great video!
Thank you!!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
@@KensGreekTable Pleasure!
Yum, looks really good. I made chicken souvlaki last night now I have to try your pork version.
Thanks Tom!!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 Let me know how it turns out.....
I am so jealous. I would love to try those lemons grown in Greek soil. I bet they are delicious. I just found your channel. I like your cooking style. I just found out I am Croatian and I love cooing Greek food.
Thank you!!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
I was in Athens last year. All the veggies tasted so much better than here in the US. Had Pork Souvlaki most days while there. It is so good. Try with the Greek Village salad. Hint, if you can find it get Greek imported Feta instead of domestic. You won't regret it. I like Dodoni.
@@lynnknoll1428 Thank you for the suggestions. I will look at Whole Foods for the feta..... thank you
Love this guy without even meeting him lol!!
Wreeeeooosss! Good job im gonna make some ! I want to try to make kontosouvli, instead of waiting for the next time we go back to greece! Americanos are into smoking, they have no clue what they missing in kontosouvli.
