  • Is it the lemony tang, the crisp edges, the slathering of extra virgin olive oil or the ton of Greek oregano that makes these Greek lemon potatoes irresistible? You tell me, but I know they are perfect for any family gathering super easy to master and universally loved. Serve them with any roast meat or poultry because they can be cooked at about any temperature and need little supervision. If you cover them, they will more tender and less crisp. FULL RECIPE BELOW
    RECIPE: GREEK LEMON POTATOES
    Ingredients:
Grated zest of and juice of 1 lemon
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil (50 ml)
    1/4 cup water (50 ml)
1 tsp. dried Greek oregano (5 ml)
6 medium baking or Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and cut in half
sea salt and freshly cracked black pepper
fresh chopped parsley and marjoram, for garnish, optional
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
Whisk lemon juice, olive oil, water, and oregano in a small bowl to blend. Toss potatoes with lemon, oil mixture in a small roasting pan. Season with salt and pepper. Roast potatoes at 375 D until tender and golden brown, turning occasionally, about 35-45 minutes. Using metal spatula, loosen potatoes from roasting pan to prevent sticking. If you prefer them soft, then cover the pan to steam and keep in moisture. Remove from oven and let stand 5 minutes for them to absorb the rest of the olive oil in the pan.
Sprinkle with freshly chopped parsley if desired.
    Serves 6

We had Greek neighbors where I grew up, they ran a coney island restaurant in Detroit. We had small yards but they grew amazing amounts of red peppers, tomatoes and figs. In the fall, they made wine which was pink and delicious. My bedroom window faced their house and when the husband would come home from the restaurant - always at night - Olga would make him dinner and play the Greek radio station full blast. It kept me awake, but it's how I came to like Greek music. I'll let you know how the potatoes turn out. Yassas.

I'm Greek living in Greece and I love when people (either Greek like Christine or not) who cook and present greek recipes focus on the core of the greek cuisine: simplicity and quality. Well done, Christine!
Those "greek lemon potatoes" (in Greece we usually call them "oven potatoes") are a super traditional recipe, which usually accompanies roast chicken, lamb, goat, beef or pork steaks, biftekia (kind of greek burgers) etc. Extra virgin olive oil, lemon juice and oregano of good quality are the three basic ingredients for this recipe.
Organic lemon zest is an extra ingredient which gives the dish a wonderful lemon flavor. Personally, when I cook "lemon potatoes", I also add one or two garlic cloves and some orange juice. Other people add a bit of mustard or additional herbs apart from oregano.
One could experiment with those extra ingredients to see what suits their personal taste. But, when cooking greek recipes, never forget: simplicity and quality!

This is a Mediterranean dish... I also very common in Portugal, Spain and Italy.
This lemon, olive oil garlic combo is so good, we call it "salmoriglio". Some variations include salt, oregano, mint, parsley, pepper... It's an accident recipe originated in Sicilia and went popular in Mediterranean cultures many centuries ago, it can be used as a dressing or a marinade.

I think I will make this with salmon tonight.
    OK, I made it. So here are a few observations;
1: Be sure the potatoes are fully cooked first.
    2. It takes some time to get the proper browning in the oven. A little higher oven temperature might be helpful.
    3. Don't start the salmon until you see browning on the potatoes - salmon does not take a long time to cook. Nor the asparagus that I added for greens.
    4. Be generous with the olive oil and lemon and the oregano - there will be some left in the pan - keep it for toast tomorrow morning - YUM!!
All in all - delicious!! I will make this again. Thanks Christine!

I had Greek lemon potatoes and chicken, at a restaurant on a Greek Island, off of Rhodes, where I had the sea water coming in over my toes as I ate at the table. It was absolutely fabulous and I’ve always wanted to go back, for more. No vegetable with it at all.
So, I’m very happy to see this recipe.

I only had the PC mini potatoes in the house and didn't want to do my , now biweekly pandemic shopping, a week early to get proper potatoes. Oh my goodness they turned out so well! I cut them in half, used PC Basil Olive Oil plus the lemon juice, oregano, salt and pepper and dash of water. They were delicious. My family is British, so our roasties are done in the pan that the meat has been in with the grinzlies and have a totally different flavor but the same wonderful texture! I love your lemon potatoes and I am doing them again tomorrow, only with a bigger batch for snacking!!

great outcome.. delicious... just a couple of minor comments... being Greek, I use more olive oil and lemon... and a tip... Cover the pan with aluminum foil for the first 30 minutes so the "sauce" doesn't evaporate...then remove the foil and heat for another 10-15 minutes to get the crispiness, while you preserve the "sauce" for some fresh bread dipping.... that's the original Greek way... good luck from Athens

The little bit of water is essential to steam the potatoes while they crisp at the edges and go slightly caramelised. I roast along with the squeezed lemon shells - they look great. I make these all the time and they are a huge hit - and very authentically Greek, just like I remember from Corfu.
