- We travel to Staunton and the home of musical icon, multiple award winner, and Statler Brother legend, Don Reid. His book, The Music of Statler Brothers: An Anthology, is a deep dive into every album and song the Statler Brothers ever recorded. It’s a behind-the-curtain look at forty years of making music told with wisdom and more than a little wit! donreid.net/
I love their song You Cant Go Home. It's so true. Lucy is adorable.
Greatest music group of any genre, bar none.
They were the Beatles of country music. Absolutely!
@@ericdixon2898 Oh, please. They were a fun group and had a few clever songs, but they became quite hokey and limited.
Thank you for all your songs I miss Harold I loved all his funny acts
What an awesome group as well as each member individually. The songs, humor and stage presents is to be honored. I could listen to him talk all day. So truthful and calming.
God bless you I have been listening to you for 48 years God bless you
Thank you for the music.
Thank you for all wonderful heartfelt song
I loved your comment of Virginia. As a 75 year Virginian I love my state. From Tidewater to Augusta County to Staunton to Goochland and now Bland, Virginia. I've move many times but always in Virginia.
Thank you for all your work Mr. Don!!! We love you!!!
I have loved the Statler brothers since I was 14 years old to then on the Grand Ole oprey at mid night
I never got a chance to see them which I regret to this day but I did listen ‘to them on utube mostly every night
So bless Bess you all
Such a lovely, touching discourse. Makes me long for one more summer with those I so love here in the state of Mississippi. Thank you for this treasure.
I just finished the audiobook version. I was driving to work when I got to the last couple paragraphs, and a special song played in the background (I don't want to spoil it for those who don't know) as Don read, and I could tell he was struggling to get it out without breaking down. I bawled my face off, I swear, for a solid 10 minutes as I drove down the road.
What a wonderful interview ! Enjoyed it thoroughly Thank you Rose and especially ( My Hero) Don!!
It would have been just the coolest thing if the Statlers and Oaks could have recorded 2 or 3 CDs together with each group singing the other's hits as well as some originals and country classics. Both groups were just phenomenal.
Wow The Statler Brother beat out the two most popular groups of the 60's The Beatles and the Supremes at the 1965 Grammy awards for best contemperary song with Flowers on the Wall.
My wife and I were introduced to The Statler Brothers in 1973 and remained faithful to their Farewell Concert. The one question that I have had for a long time is when did they ever have time for family? With performing on the road and rehearsing and writing while at home, I don't know when they would ever have time for family.
42 Years Ago, My Late Father and My Still Spunky, Cant Sit Still Mother took THEIR 8-YEAR-OLD SON to his VERY FIRST CONCERT. Who were they taking him to see? His Favorite Band, The Statler Brothers! Man, what a night! What a memory! What an impact! I left that night saying "I want to be the one standing on that stage at the Augusta Richmond County Civic Center(now the James Brown Arena) in Augusta GA. Just 10 years later, I would accomplish just that because I became the morning radio host of my hometown of Augusta GA but also ended up bringing on stage some of the biggest acts over the past few decades. Unfortunately, I never got the opportunity to meet the Statler Brothers, and have met everyone from a Rolling Stone, a Beatle, the Beastie Boys, Pearl Jam, etc etc etc. I ended up in the Rock Format, but am a huge country music fan, but my country is The Statlers, Oak Ridge Boys, Alabama, Randay Travis, etc etc etc. BUT ONE DAY...one day it will happen! Unfortunately, I will not get a chance to meet one of my biggest comedic influences in Harold Reid. I doubt many call him a comedian, but oh man, they should because he was hilarious.
I have a couple good memories of the Statler brothers. 2 from one concert. I was 4 going on 5 in 1980, and listening to them with my dad was one thing we enjoyed doing together. Well, on the way to the show, 10th Anniversary had just been released, I asked my dad if they are going to do Nobody Wants to be Country. He said no because they didn't have a clarinet in the band. Well, they did it. They also played the Movies, also featuring the clarinet. I don't remember anything else from the show, but the stage attire was from The Country America Loves. After the show, they signed autographs. My dad told my mom that he was going to talk the the keyboard player and see if I could have my picture taken with the 4 of them when everyone clears out. My mom said that my dad would never be able to pull that off. Well, he did, but, my mom used all of the film in the camera. Well, at least I was able to see them, and then a few more times. This is a great interview. Don is such a genuine man.
Lovely interview💕💕💕💕👍👍
I just ordered your book. Thank you, thank you!
Rose is a great interviewer . Really enjoyed it .
Just finished the book. Fantastic…… While I think Hunter Thompson’s assessment of the music business is basically on target, this book showed me a much more civil and inspiring side of the business.
Tremendous.
The only thing missing from that book is the sweet harmony of their voices.
These guts were good....especially the Roadhog stuff...so funny on so many levels.....
Awsome
I actually lived in California for a few years your years and not once did we have Christmas or Thanksgiving homemade. It was always ordered from somewhere and you only got enough food for the meal never any leftovers. I don't think you could pay me to live there again.
why did the statler brothers retire 20 years ago but the Oak Ridge Boys are still on tour in 2022?
Maybe it just tired them out that much and just didn’t wanna do it anymore and called it a day. We’re all different
The Statlers have been doing it many more years than Oak Ridge.
@@robbyblack2699 statlers were discovered by johnny cash. The original oak ridge boys started way before and then william lee golden joined them in 1964 and duane allen a year or 2 later then richard sterban left elvis presley to join the oaks in the early 70's then joe bondall a few years later.the oak ridge boys were a gospel group for over 30 years before they ever did country music
They wanted to retire while they were still on top, and while they were all still healthy, and strong, and would have a few years to just kick back, and relax, and enjoy their time with their Families. That was exactly the reasons given by Former Lead Singer, Don Reid.
The lady had to read about the Statlers at the beginning. I'm pretty sure she had no idea who they were before this. Pathetic!
