OE coil packs are arguably the best to use. Your better off leaving the factory 3X,XXX mile ones then the junk aftermarket ones. If you want to sell the OE ones, let me know. A magnet is ideal as well for removing the plugs if you aren't using a plug socket. What was the plug gap?
I know someone selling a totally refurbished, like-new Dinan Vortech supercharger kit. Literally everything is like new. Full instructions, carb stickers, belt, hardware etc. You won't find one anywhere for sale like it. 6psi - 300hp. I got my Stage 4 kit from him (3.5 maf, throttle body, CAI, 3.5bar FPR, M50 manifold). Let me know if you're interested, Matt!
Gotta use a magnet to pull out those plugs, the best way to do it in my opinion. Spark plug sockets are finicky, and pliers don't always fit. (like in your case)
I used to feel the same way, my socket would always stay stuck on after loosening the plug and come off the extension until I got this swivel style extension spark plug socket with a magnet from advanced auto the employee told me about it was about 12 bucks one of my favorite tools I own now 👌🏼
@@ChocolatePuppies yeah I don't even necessarily go that far, I've still got the little extendo magnet that O'Rielly's sells, my friend gave it to me when he worked there. Nothing fancy, but it gets the job done and works every time.
1) Put the oil cap on 180-degrees from how you have it so it reads the same direction as the other engine cover text. 2) If you develop what sounds like rod knock in ~5k miles or 6-18 months it will almost assuredly be the spark plugs that have come loose. Torquing them to spec on these S52 engines leaves them too loose, and they work themselves off. I have torqued mine as high as 40 foot-lbs (yes, that high) but recommend ~30 ft-lbs to be on the safe side if you end up having to re-torque.
You have to take the oil cap off to remove the plastic cover covering the coils and spark plugs. Once you pull the plastic cover off, you should definitely put the oil cap back on before proceeding. You will have to pull the cap back off to put the plastic cover back on though.
At 50, I would firmly be in the old guy owner group. Lol. Definitely trying to take care of mine, but it is not a low mileage example. Still really enjoy it.
I'm curious where the ground wire goes on your front coil. I've seen some e36's where there is a ground cable connecting all 6 coils and others where just cylinder 3 and 4 are connected. In our 95 M3, there's an audible wine coming from the speakers as the RPM increases. Doesn't always happen but I suppose there's a ground loose somewhere.
Its crazt to see u so in love with THIS car (super insane example) n I literally feel the same about mine while mine isnt a quarter as special as that. E36bestcar
when someone gets 3 sets of wheels for their new car they usually say this was a big financial mistake never again when matt does it he say man this is so much fun i'll buy 7 sets for the next car Ha,ha...
Your videos are well done. But, I just have the same questions as others. Especially with ignition parts, if it runs fine, replacing them is a waste of time and money. I have neither I can waste.
This s52 (we got s50b32 in my country ) engine looks closely related to the m52/m54 family from what I can see here, I wonder how much different it is in power delivery versus an m54b30. I think one cool mod that Matt can do is to drop in an s50b32, which will make this already special car, much more special.
“There are probably loads of videos on the internet of how to do this, but this will be better” as he over tightens the spark plug. It’s much better to be modest and respected than arrogant and be embarrassed.
Matt you need microfiber shorts so you don't scratch the paint
This doesn’t sound like a bad idea tbh
@@drrylclyde I do all my mechanical work in a full microfiber furry suit. Cleans the car at the same time.
For an April Fools joke I want him to list an OG spec bath towel.
Don't give him any ideas
@@notalexiwnl Why not?
For the exhaust I recommend getting a SuperSprint exhaust including the headers, they’re really popular on bmws etc in europe
He will start with Dinan anyway then try 3-4 more and finally settle on SS race. I have bimmerworld mid and down tubes with SS race sounds excellent
You're right I bought a SS sections 1 and 2 for an E46, The car got totalled and I never got to hear them installed
That’s what I fitted on my E36 M3 GT. SS decat back system. Best by far.
Your point about starting a project with a car that's already nice is very accurate. I've learned that the hard way twice, somehow.

There is a oem spark plug remover in the tool kit in the trunk

Everyday that goes by, the more I check on pressol clears being in stock😂
Me too.
Can't wait to see how this turns out. Just need a mint E46 to round out the trio now!
I always remove the spark plugs with a magnet after you loosen them. It works great

Good call on the magnet.

Next time use the coils to remove the old plugs after you loosen them. Just push the coil on and pull it out.
Or use a plug socket...
That's my way to go! No extra tools needed :)

Matt, just a suggestion. Leave to oil cap on until you have completed your work. The last thing you would want is to drop something into the engine.
You have to take the oil cap off to remove the plastic cover covering the coils and spark plugs. Once you pull the plastic cover off, you should definitely put the oil cap back on before proceeding. You will have to pull the cap back off to put the plastic cover back on though.
Can I buy all these good stuff that u changing out ? 🥺
I love my E36 ....slowly rebuilding mine
Top tip... use the spark plug tool in the trunk toolkit.
Hey Matt I am really looking forward to the E46! That’s the M3 that got me started on loving BMW
At 50, I would firmly be in the old guy owner group. Lol. Definitely trying to take care of mine, but it is not a low mileage example. Still really enjoy it.
Couldn't remember the nut size on the coil packs and was being lazy. Thanks for telling us it was 10mm!
Video reminder helped me remember to make one more Civic entry order!
Seems like a waste to replace the coil packs. Possibly even a downgrade from the OEM 1996 parts.
I've always felt have 2 bolts per coil on the e36 was such overkill. So easy to drop one.
Dude said 25 ft lbs on plug torque spec and I went 🤨
that could’ve been real bad
How come Matt doesn't have a telescope magnet to pull the plugs out??
Seriously dude. I was like wtf wheres the magnet at?
Or use an old coil pack since they’re spring clamped to the top of the plug.

What ignition coils did you use? Should only use oem or bavauto ones
Get some Gearwrench spark plug swivel sockets. They loosen the plug and grab it too for easy removal.
I have them. They break too easily.
@@ObsessedGarage What broke for you specifically? I’ve been using them for quite some time without any issues. Look up Gearwrench 80546.

Matt you have read the fault codes ? Is there any old codes logged in ecu ?
Look into getting a carley code reader

What coil pack or these ?
The comment at the 8min mark is so true. N54 requires so much maintenance.
Junk...
junk lol buy some eldors old man, your n54 was junk bc you decided to spend on the 1m badge instead of mods

Good thing he took off the fuel rail cover;)
Is that lip OEM? m3 lci?
Dinan/Fikse FM5’s or bust
Windshield cowl???
Can't wait to see Matt going to a Junkyard with ALLDAYANTHONY to search for ancient parts for his Beemer 😎
Did the car turn on w those coil packs?
Yep, no issues.
Matt, those plug pliers are for wires not the plugs themselves.
Wrong they are for removing hoses.
Use the coils to remove the plugs
Grab a differential support bracket from Active Autowerk while you're at it...
But like...why not use a magnet to take out the plugs?
Bmw content! My favorite
Did you measure the plug gap? And all the tools you have you don’t have a magnet? 💁🏻♂️

You should’ve used a magnet to get them out.
