I got my Class A permit about 4 years ago, it was a three part test. General knowledge, air brake and combination vehicle. I just read the book here and there for about a week beforehand and had no problems.

Most of the tests are not difficult at all; even the metal coil and towing endorsement tests were fairly straight forward. The one that could be considered the hardest is the hazmat test, but even that one is fairly simple.
