As a matter of fact, Barbie’s role was so big in obtaining enough plutonium for the building of the bomb that in internal referendum, the project was referred to as Pink Harvest. That resulted in Oppenheimer becoming very sad, which led to the working title of this movie being Blue Harvest.

Oppenheimer was one of the best movies i’ve seen so far this year. Saw it in a completely packed IMAX, was captivated for the full 3 hour runtime, loved how good all the cast were and Ludwig Goransson’s score really hit hard especially in that final scene
Ludwig Goransson is so much more accomplished than people realized. Dude also got his start scoring Community where he befriended Donald Glover and started producing his Childish Gambino albums. Then he absolutely crushed the scores for Black Panther, Creed, Turning Red, Mandolorian and despite how middling the show is, he did the banger intro theme for Book of Boba Fett. Love seeing him score Nolan movies!
My one gripe about Barbie is that the car chase scene felt like a Chevy Commercial for the new crossover SUV, available at a dealer near you. Now maybe that was intentional, considering the marketing and branding nature of the movie, but that really took me out of the swing of the movie.
I'm was looking forward to seeing Barbie and Oppenheimer. I was most interested in Oppenheimer because he's a fascinating individual and it looks really well acted/directed. I saw Barbie first and that might have been a mistake. I thought it would be fun but I didn't expect it to be so good. I'm actually a bit worried Oppenheimer is going to pale in comparison, not because I expect it to be bad; It'll probably be good. Barbie set a really high standard though. I'll find out this weekend.
I'm still convinced that Barbie is Agent K's dying fever dream, making it Blade Runner canon, as it would literally be an Android Dreaming of Electric Sheep.

The only thing I would say that disappointed me about Oppenheimer (which granted, I didn’t see it in IMAX) is the actual explosion of the Trinity test. I feel that the representation of the atomic blast towards the beginning that Oppenheimer visualizes is much more compelling. Perhaps actual footage of the Trinity test with the audio from a practical explosion could have had more of an impact. Overall though, I’d give the film 8.5/10 strictly because the explosion was slightly underwhelming, the beginning can be a tad disorienting, but credit to the emotion the movie has and the care that was taken to understand Oppenheimer.

The fact that both movies either downplay vfx artists hard work (Barbie) Or out right exclude 80% of the VFX artists from their credits (Oppenheimer, there was only like 120 artists that work on it so no excuse not to credit them all) Is outright terrible for Hollywood to do. And the reason for the bad vfx is due to studios making unrealistic demands and never planning the shoot with vfx in mind. And on the flip side if its done well, unless it's groundbreaking people don't notice or pay it any mind. Then when it looks bad the studios blame the artists and vilify CGI and vfx knowing full well it's their fault and now these two try to downplay their contributions as a marketing tool it's terrible man.
One thing about Oppenheimer that wasn’t exactly clear in the film, the reason revoking his security clearance was such a big deal wasn’t a personal blow (which is what I thought too). It was a way to discredit him and destroy his reputation so he would no longer be active on boards in government administrations. He was a valued counselor on important discussions up to that point, but because he wasn’t supportive of even greater weapons of mass destruction, this was a way to discredit and delegitimize a person who had become a hero in the eyes of most Americans.
I haven't seen the movie. Does it discuss the fact that Oppenheimer was a communist? (Did that potentially contribute to his clearance being revoked, or to his not supporting the development of more and bigger weapons?)
Ok. On the last episode of Secret Invasion, Skrull Rhodey is shot dead. Terrence Howard emerges from the shadows, gun smoking, and says. "BOOM. You lookin' for this? Bitch.' Except he doesn't say 'bitch.'
I actually think Kraven will become Venom, although we do know that Harry will have the symbiote at the beginning of the game because they showed it already attached to him in the post-credits scenes of Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales. My theory is that it’s not bonding with Harry, it escapes and comes across Peter, then bonds with him. Eventually, Miles and Mary Jane show Peter that the symbiote is corrupting him, which leads to Peter rejecting it. Pissed off at being rejected, the symbiote searches for someone it can bond with that can help it destroy Spider-Man/the Spider-Men: Kraven. Kraven is frustrated that the Spider-Men have stopped all his attempts to capture the Lizard, so he bonds with the symbiote. The enemy of my enemy is my friend, after all. This is where Venom is finally born. Somewhere towards the middle/end of the game, I’m predicting that Harry will die, so they can show Norman blaming the Spider-Men and start developing his Green Goblin persona/equipment for the next game. I’m prolly completely wrong, but I look forward to finding out in October.

Talking of being poor, we used to laugh at Jim in Neighbours screaming about his daughter spending a hundred dollars on something... and my Dad would say "that's about £40 quid, no wonder he's goin mental!"
The explosion scene is cool and I like the sound design choice, I actually overall thought the line right after the explosion was more impactful than the explosion itself. Idk I think maybe not seeing the aftermath is possibly why i didn’t feel the impact I was waiting for some shot of the creator
Hmmm, as a former member of IBEW Local 640 (Phoenix, Arizona) of 9 years, I'm going to call BS on this corporate suit's statement about his dad being on strike and the "toll" it took on their family. I happen to still have my union agreement lying around, and local 640 has had an an anti-strike clause in their agreement since the 80's, when the union lost most of their commercial and residential business to non-union shops after Palo Verde Nuclear Power Plant was built. Arizona is also a right-to-work state, which gives the unions very little power. Anyways, just my two cents as the official IBEW LU 640 electrician of the podcast
I agree with your take on the depiction of the nuclear detonation itself. I felt very underwhelmed by it, and the wide shot of the cloud starting to roll upwards just didn't look right to me at all. Given the assault on the senses the whole film is, especially with Imax audio, I thought it was a missed opportunity. I thought the film was amazing though.
Mason should really study about the history of dolls that existed before Barbie that could be dressed. The creator simply changed the narrative on her outreach to the dumb populace by having access to TV.
Yeah, the idea that Ruth Handler created Barbie out of whole cloth is...sweet, but dishonest. She went to Germany, saw Bild Lilli, a sexed up undressable doll for men, and imported a slightly squeakier version to America as though she'd thought of it herself. The film does a very good job of burying those seedy origins.

What is funny is that I have now listened to this podcast twice, once before watching Oppenheimer and Barbie and again after having seen both and loved them. On my first listen, I was totally in the camp of "ugh another man-hating movie" because I was binging Mauler, The Little Platoon, The Movie Cynic and the Critical Drinker. The first two guys didn't really harp on the woman-empowerment annoyances in Barbie, Indy 5, Star Wars, etc as much as the other two did (mostly Critical Drinker). At first I thought I would not even watch Barbie because of my "politics over storywritting" anger with movies lately, but then I watched 12 Angry Men last week and decided to try and leave my own personal hangups out of the movies and just experience them for myself. Thank fucking God I did. Now after listening to this podcast again I might just unsub from Critical Drinker and maybe Movie Cynic because everything they argue against almost always gravitates back to this anger at Disney/Kathleen Kennedy/{insert female creator here}. Maybe they need to have a genuine come to Jesus moment and realize they are acting like Juror #10 too much and need a time-out. Thanks bois, big sando 4 lyfe!
Sounds like you’ve had your own come to Jesus moment about who to let influence you and to choose your UA-cam binging content more wisely. At least for 2 out of 4 so far.
This is unironically inspiring to read and I hope more people can learn to think for themselves instead of falling into UA-cam click bait. Don't get me wrong, I hate most Star Wars stuff and a lot of recent Disney stuff too, but there are a lot of people out there who just want to sell their brand and don't actually care about giving real critique.
It bothers me that what some people seem to be taking away from Oppenheimer is that the people behind this were just purely evil and everything about it was just purely evil. Yes, nuclear bombs, any bombs really, are a horrific thing, war is a horrific thing, death is a horrific thing. But it’s not that simple, and it just shows a fundamental lack of historical knowledge when you present it as “these guys were just evil” “the bombs probably didn’t have to be dropped”. In a related note, my only real problem with the movie was that it was unfair to Henry Stimson, although a big part of that is what audiences are choosing to take away, as James and Mason show here. There is no evidence he told anyone to take Kyoto of the list of targets because he honeymooned there. (In fact, he probably didn’t actually “honeymoon” there in the strictest sense. He and his wife were there decades after their marriage, and it wasn’t on a vacation. He did do some sightseeing, but he didn’t even write specifically about Kyoto in his diary when he talked about how beautiful Japan was. But sure, he probably did really like it.) Even in the movie the actual reason he gives is that it was too culturally significant. The only actual reason I’ve seen some historians suggest his “honeymoon” might have been a big factor in his reasoning is that other cities also had cultural significance, so he might have had a more personal reason. This ignores the fact that his point was that Kyoto was the MOST culturally significant so it’s just not particularly compelling. And this was his actual reasoning. He wrote quite a bit about it. He knew what bombing Kyoto could do to U.S.-Japanese relations after the war, and he knew how other nations might view it. I’m sure his personal affection toward the city was on his mind at least somewhat, but the idea that this was what motivated him in the decision is just wrong. In general, Stimson was an avid student of Japanese history, and was also very concerned with bomb ethics. These decisions weren’t made lightly.
People who haven't seen Oppenheimer yet: *"DOES HE SAY IT?? DOES HE SAY THE THING AFTER THE BIG BOOM??* People who just saw Oppenheimer: *"Uhhhh... He does. Uhhh... After..a LITTLE 'boom boom'"* 😅😂 I have become spoiler. Destroyer of hymens!!

I think Toy Story 3 was a better Barbie movie, personally.
Then Bane shows up and is like, "Big enough for you, bitch?!"
I know this defeats the point of James not saying the name, but I'm really really curious who the UA-camr who turned out to be a piece of s*** is.
after rewatching Anchorman 2 just now, right now, I no longer have anything to comment
May the writers call Robert McCall to bring justice to the faces of execs.
People who haven't seen Oppenheimer yet:
*"DOES HE SAY IT?? DOES HE SAY THE THING AFTER THE BIG BOOM??*
People who just saw Oppenheimer:
*"Uhhhh... He does. Uhhh... After..a LITTLE 'boom boom'"* 😅😂
I have become spoiler. Destroyer of hymens!!
i'm gonna claw my eyes out over the obnoxiously adorable "Oscar-Nom-Noms". #AussiesDoItBetter
For those of you who are wondering ‘what does it feel like to get hit by a nuclear explosion?’ Imagine being thrown into the center of the sun; picture how hot that would be. Now times it by 5, and then you have your answer.
I would just like to point out that the Shaun video has some issues regarding the claims he makes, so take it with a grain of salt.
I don't mean to be that guy, but I don't think aquaman can drown in water. Maybe other liquids like mountain dew.
