My 20$ set from China never failed to do the trick and has more components than the 54$ set from iFixit. I'm not debating that iFixit is higher quality, but some of these kits from China are really, really good! Oh and suction cups are rubbish, buy those from iFixit. That's just a fact.
I got myself an iFixit kit despite knowing about cheaper alternatives simply because I knew for a fact it would be good. I might buy some extra bits, and maybe a screwdriver extension that is thinner or something, but iFixit definitely has the best support.

if you are talking about the 24 bit version then it should only be a question of what you value, the cheaper set with fever bits or the more expensive version from ifixit, which have more bits but takes a lot more space. if you just need the bits the better option would be ifixit but there are value in the awsome size of xiaomi kit
Xiaomi also sells toolkits??? Lmao, i honestly dont know if i should buy one or not bc im broke af and i cant afford the ifixit one but if the things gonna break in no time (like the one from aliexpress my stepdad gave me) i would just waste money jsfakgfjahs
@@DEMENTO01 yeah, German tools company Wiha did a partnership with Xiaomi to produce the toolkit, I've heard good things considering the price ~$15-20USD
the problem with cheap tools and low quality is not the variety...is the metal quality especially on the screwdriver noses. i had a tone of them break or become round with just a bit of extra push while trying to unscrew a stuck crews or something. they are just butter noses they produce many metal srapnels and get destroyed.
I would have enjoyed seeing since analysis between bits, but that's likely outside of LTT's wheelhouse. My experience with ifixit and the cheaper Chinese set agrees with you, softer cheaper steel.
i get repair kits that come with screwdrivers and such every time i order a part so i literally have hundreds of them, if one breaks i just chuck it and grab another
I dont think linus would do that, unfortunatly. But it would be cool to make a test in a soldered screw (every bit type avaiable like phillips, torx, etc), using a torquimeter, trying hard to unscrew it (using even a lever system if required) and measure how much force is used before the bits suffer any significant damage. It should give a really cool idea of how much of a difference in resistance there is with those. I think that maybe you guys could go in project farm's channel and ask him to do this test, this guy do this kind of tests (even tho it seems to be more related to industrial stuff), but idk.
I worked there for 4 1/2 years. I supplemented all of my new ProTechs and other bit kits with the extension from the old 54 bit kit that came with the Classic ProTech. I certainly think that the tools are a little pricey for what you get, but they also stand behind them. That lifetime warranty is indeed useful for parts and tools I've bought from there since leaving.
Subbed. I was expecting this would end up being a thinly veiled plug for a sponsor, and instead got a glimpse of some serious integrity. This video is 3 years old so hopefully this honestly is still an important part of your content! Thumbs up!!
The problem is iFixit seems to be catered to the U.S. for most parts. Tried ordering their essential tool kit once and while they do ship to where I'm currently living, the shipping cost alone was over 3 times of the tool kit's price. Would love to see them expand and open a couple more stores in different locations.
@@Moody_Blues_ this is quite old, but I'd like to give some insight as someone who lives in a third world country. in Brazil, shipping prices are TERRIBLE. the products are expensive (since they're charged in USD) and the shipping doesn't help, especially when taxes are in the mix. in a nutshell, the stores that do ship here (which are almost none, when talking about the "reputable brands" we see in LTT's and other tech youtuber's videos) are REALLY expensive, so we tend to make do either with cheaper national brands or with the china stuff from aliexpress or banggood. i believe that these companies would only have things to gain if they paid a little bit more attention to growing markets like ours, sadly tho, it takes money to get money and most of them are not willing to bet on things that might not catch on.
Not really? I mean, the conclusion is that you might be able to get a lot together cheaper but it's going to be a lot of work to find good stuff and you still might get lemons in them... For most people that don't have to turn over every dime then that means just get the ifixit kit...
I usually get thrifty stuff but this video has made me think about getting an ifixit kit instead so idk what you mean, he didn't slate the kit at all. Pointed out shortfalls... Yeah
@@DevinJuularValentine This, I thought this was actually a good endorsement of the product. Also if a sponsor pulls out because of a review video where minor flaws are pointed out then the company has bad business practices anyhow. That's more the practice of the sort of companies that pay for fake reviews on amazon, not reputable companies. (Japanese video game companies not withstanding.)
@@finraziel iFixit quality is par with mid-tier china-y stuff because it is just like that, but rebranded, painted in a nice color scheme and with a higher price tag. For the lighter stuff it holds its own, for daily use I'd recommend something more robust. If one have the budget, there are some nice Wera/Wiha bit kits that will last you a lifetime.
I picked up the HyperTough kit from Walmart for about $14. Highly recommend. Has everything you need including security torx. Only issue was included guitar picks which I just submitted for my own. Screw ifixit and their $60 price tag.
Yea I got one off of Amazon that has literally everything I fix it offers in their 100$ value pack with the same tool carrier and I can say my 25$ I spent on that went way farther than any 100$ I fix it could screw me out of😂 I fix it isn’t worth the money they just have good marketing so you hear about them a lot. They offer nothing special
I would like to publicly amend my post. Ifixit is expensive. But it’s also quality manufactured with pride. That’s something I will always spend more for especially in today’s world where you have to look hard to find anyone with a give a shit attitude. I fix it is one of the good ones from what I can see from the outside looking in. And if you are able to afford the top of the line then I trust thats what you will be delivered. Walmart Hypertough kit is still intact and working. But come on…it’s walmart. I must have been on drugs endorsing them.🤦
Linus, I love this review, it shows your honesty and also non-biased mentality towards the industry. This approach of low and high-end stuff from a consumer-standpoint is something missing in the big media. How I do miss the Tech Quickies lately? Anything happening with that channel? I've been watching you for a few years now and can only say: keep up the good work!
You forgot to mention the integrated magnetic pad and parts tray in the iFixit kit, and the fact that everything comes in one convenient, small self-contained pouch with easy access to all of the tools. I think that, along with the integrated parts tray are pretty important features of the iFixit kit. It's far more convenient than loose tools and while you could buy a cheap pouch to hold the tools it wouldn't be a perfect fit.
what about the hardness of the screwdriver tips. Nothing more annoying than buying a screwdriver kit and the tips bent right from the start. I'd like to know how the durable the screwdrivers are? I'm betting that a high grade steel kits are hard to find. IFIXT's lifetime warranty looks like a good indication, (German Steel?) AvE's tool reviews are binge worthy. where I learned of- Hardness Testing File Sets; Type: Testing File Set; Scale Type: Rockwell C; Minimum Hardness: 40 RC; Maximum Hardness: 65 RC; Hardness: 40 to 65 RC;
Well thanks to this review I actually went out and purchased it I've been eyeballing it for a while now and I really can't find a better product out there. so I went through your link and purchased the pro kit Thanks for the review You guys are awesome as usual.
it's not about the location of manufacture perse, there are great products made in the same locations as bad products. it's just that in places that do produce bad products, it's up to the Company buying manufacturing space and time to fly over THEIR OWN QA to manage things because China isn't going to do it for them (and is known to secretly downgrade what is produced over time).
I got the same screwdriver kit in blue from a random amazon seller and I'm really happy with it. I took apart multiple Laptops (Normal and MacBooks), PCs and built some furniture with the kit. still works perfectly fine and I love that thing.
One thing that constantly drives me crazy with the Ifixit kit is that it doesn't have a magnet in the bit end of the flexible extension, the bits just fall right out of the end.
really? what a terrible oversight, magnetic bits and tips are a must when dealing with small stuff like laptops. The one screwdriver I have that isn't magnet tip I stick a magnet on the shaft.
I think the big take aways here are 1) if you want it all in an easy carry case, ifixit is the clear winner 2) spend the money once and never worry about having to find a similar product to replace the broken ones. 3) the ones Linus recommend in his eyes were in addition to the ifixit ones due to the slight differences that the kit lacks. Overall, I think a thinner ifixit kit with a few of the AliExpress tools would be the perfect setup. Great job being honest and giving detailed explanations as to why you like/dislike either set. Also, more Anthony! He's incredibly knowledgeable but isn't as nitty gritty as level1tech. He talks alot about the stuff I want to hear but ramps down the vocab and terms to an easily understandable monologue.
To be fair though, they couldn't find a better suction cup? I found 2 different types that were a lot more sturdy in less than 20 seconds of searching!
Honestly.. I am disappointed. I am a frequent AliExpress shopper and I am sad to see that everything you got there was found by a simple "ifixit" search on the site. Instead, I wrote "screwdriver kit" and many other things popped out with either better price, quality or quantity of pieces in the kit. I am sure i can find better alternatives to the other things from the video that were a miss. Sorry but taking 2 minutes of searching just doesn't seem realistic to me. And this video probably took a total of 4-6 hours of work and its just a shame that it was for nothing.👌
Yeah I guess but he was specifically looking for an ifixit rip off, in this case it wasn't the wrong search, it was the wrong idea, he shouldn't of tried to make a ifixit rip off, he should've made a similarly useful screwdriver kit.
When comparing the ifixit kit and a generic kit on amazon i bought the generic kit to try and successfully replaced the battery on my Zune 80g and personal smart phone. I can't verify the differences between the two, i just know the generic kit worked for me. From an observation standpoint some of the tools look identical.
I have that exact orange screwdriver kit and it serves me perfectly well, I love it! Mine has some additional things though, I got it from Amazon and it has markings on the rubber to show which bit is which, and came with a guitar pick and prying tool plus some additional bits, overall it's awesome.
I paused this at 40 seconds in when Anthony showed up to say that I already love this video now that he's in it. Now I'll finish watching how great he made it being in it with Linus. You guys and gals over there at LMG are awesome! Thanks for so much great content! Anthony, you the man!
I've actually had tips on those cheaper kits bend and deform when working on older stuff that haven't been opened in a long time or perhaps rusted. So quantity doesn't always account for quality. Sure I can buy a no name spanner for half the price of a Gedore for example. But I'll end up buying 12 of them. If it's something you use daily, spend the extra cash and get the proper thing.
I don't bother with an iFixit Kit... I just use a Swiss Army Knife that hopefully has a screwdriver in it.

My 20$ set from China never failed to do the trick and has more components than the 54$ set from iFixit. I'm not debating that iFixit is higher quality, but some of these kits from China are really, really good!
Oh and suction cups are rubbish, buy those from iFixit. That's just a fact.
Could you give the name?
I got myself an iFixit kit despite knowing about cheaper alternatives simply because I knew for a fact it would be good. I might buy some extra bits, and maybe a screwdriver extension that is thinner or something, but iFixit definitely has the best support.

I'd love to see the iFixit kit compared with the Xiaomi Wiha screwdriver set!
if you are talking about the 24 bit version then it should only be a question of what you value, the cheaper set with fever bits or the more expensive version from ifixit, which have more bits but takes a lot more space. if you just need the bits the better option would be ifixit but there are value in the awsome size of xiaomi kit
Wiha tools are extremely awesome, and I expect them to be built better than ifixit counterparts.
Xiaomi also sells toolkits??? Lmao, i honestly dont know if i should buy one or not bc im broke af and i cant afford the ifixit one but if the things gonna break in no time (like the one from aliexpress my stepdad gave me) i would just waste money jsfakgfjahs

the problem with cheap tools and low quality is not the variety...is the metal quality especially on the screwdriver noses. i had a tone of them break or become round with just a bit of extra push while trying to unscrew a stuck crews or something. they are just butter noses they produce many metal srapnels and get destroyed.
I would have enjoyed seeing since analysis between bits, but that's likely outside of LTT's wheelhouse.
My experience with ifixit and the cheaper Chinese set agrees with you, softer cheaper steel.
Yes, especially their torx screw, it become round when unscrewing a slightly tight screw
I was about to comment about this until I see your post. Cheap tools heads get worn out quite easily... and cheap screws too!! Gaaah!
i get repair kits that come with screwdrivers and such every time i order a part so i literally have hundreds of them, if one breaks i just chuck it and grab another
I dont think linus would do that, unfortunatly.

You forgot to mention the integrated magnetic pad and parts tray in the iFixit kit, and the fact that everything comes in one convenient, small self-contained pouch with easy access to all of the tools. I think that, along with the integrated parts tray are pretty important features of the iFixit kit.
I think the big take aways here are
1) if you want it all in an easy carry case, ifixit is the clear winner
2) spend the money once and never worry about having to find a similar product to replace the broken ones.
