  • As I've said before, longsword is probably my weakest discipline. The Lithuanian was good, eventually winning the bronze! I almost managed to disarm him as his gauntlet got stuck on my sword. It would have been advantageous for me to push at this moment, but the tip of my blade was dangerously close to the visor and I pulled back for safety. Some 40 seconds into the fight I realized that I was not going to get past his guard, so, I improvised and started nipping at his wrists, but due to his defense, hit his gauntlets half the time. Looking at the footage, those blows were weak as hell. In 20/20 hindsight I probably should have closed the gap and denied him the reach advantage.

Are they sure it is a world championship? At least one of them look like a complete novice not managing the distance and not using much footwork or pressure.

In a historical context, the IMCF fighters are using tournament armor in accordance with tournament rules. The reason you don't see bills and pollaxes is because they weren't present in a medieval tourney either.
If you want to see more realistic fighting techniques which includes thrusting to the gaps, you should look towards HEMA instead. However, HEMA guys generally don't fight in a harness. There are (some really awesome) exceptions, but it's not very common.
Pick whatever floats your boat =)

its not just a matter of wearing The appropiate equipment. Where is The skill and technique?!

Give me 10.000€ for a custom fitted harness and I'll guarantee that the moves will be better ;) Helm aside, my harness was completely DYI at the time.
Also, I freely admit that longsword is probably my weakest discipline in the very first line in the video description. If you're looking for more skill, skip the pool stage and watch the finals instead.
