The armor is metal and the shield is probably wood, you know force transfers through things right? It's why football players still get concussions. If you've ever boxed your know that you can still get knocked out through you gloves if the guy has the power. Boxing headgear is another example, force just transfers through. Same thing happening here, the armor doesnt do anything against blunt force trauma.

Medics came around every 5 rounds average because they're beating the fuck out of each other. Saw broken arms, lower legs, wrists and dislocated bones in those three days. One guy almost died because his helmet flew off and the other guy was just about to hit him on the head with a polearm, luckily the refs there are very cautious and quik not like this ref. Shit is awesome and becoming really popular in Europe, especially in Eastern Europe.

These are some of the toughest dudes i've ever met.
They fight with concussions and broken bones and they PAY to do it because they absolutely love it.
I grew up & also worked with some dudes who did SCA & went to Pennsic Wars annually.
They used to play a game where 2 men would drink, then each hold 1 end of a pole & take turns hitting each other in the head with swords until one gave up or got knocked out...and they never gave up.
They no longer allow this game due to too many head injuries despite the helmets 😂😂😂

Might just be a habit to let him beat the dude for a longer period of time, since the helmet reduces blunt force trauma, so maybe there is a chance for the dude on the ground to actually recover.

in other sports like Buhurt they have a brightly coloured flag on a pole to interrupt.
The refs push the flag right into the fighter's FOV and everbody stops. Even in HEMA, which is with modern gear and less blunt force, refs usually have a wooden staff to put between the fighters if necessary.

0:49 Is just terrible job by ref. Guy is not watching at a good angle, and is in no hurry to get a better vantage point. Especially since 1 fighter has mounted the other, and is now delivering hits to a grounded oppent. Very obvious to us viewers/camera how bad this was because of our better angle, so its refs job to actually try to keep a good eye on things instead of just staying way back and barely moving.

There was likely a bit of both. They did have varying armor / weapons "systems" and tactics so there was definitely some level of battlefield complexity (not just hordes of people running at each other and eventually piling on top of each other).

Against an opponent in armor you wouldn't use a sword, but a blunt weapon (including the handle of your sword if you don't have a dedicated blunt weapon).
Then you would try to smash your opponent with your blunt weapon. And if you end up on the ground, which would most probably happen, you would use the knife you always keep to try to find a gap in the armor and stab your opponent.
Then, up until the battle of Azincourt where the English broke most of the rules of war which applied back then, you would try not to kill your opponent but rather kidnap him to ask for ransom money (if you had the money and right to have an armor you were noble, period, because warfare was the nobles' job). The English killed all their French prisoners, which was the most perfidious and honorless thing one could do, and killed chivalry.
This event would've been more amazing if the audience were required to wear medieval clothing and the ring is made of wood.

As a show and combat sport it's a great idea, I don't know why it's not more popular.
Mostly the cost.
You see, armor is made out of tempered steel so you wouldn't be stuck in it if the dents are too much. Such suit of armor will cost about 3-6 grand and if you want it custom made to look cooler add another few thousands. Also weapons should be durable enough to survive several fights a day. So to get all the equipment you're looking at minimum of 4-5 thousands dollars. Consider that getting such equipment across the border is difficult and you have to pay a hefty fee.
I ask this question in a lot of these vids but what happens if someone ends up getting killed from a wrong hit in this?

Knockouts are much less common in this sport than usual MMA and such. Plus, at least from my perspective, it seems to be significantly harder to tell whether or not a fighter is still defending themselves or not.

These rules you see here were deliberately designed to resemble mma, as far as I'm aware. It's not exactly historically accurate (no system is today), but still more so then most romanticized fantasies of nobility in books and movies.
