IMCF World Championship 2015: 1vs1 Longsword: Lithuania vs Estonia
Переглядів 2,8 тис.8 років тому
As I've said before, longsword is probably my weakest discipline. The Lithuanian was good, eventually winning the bronze! I almost managed to disarm him as his gauntlet got stuck on my sword. It would have been advantageous for me to push at this moment, but the tip of my blade was dangerously close to the visor and I pulled back for safety. Some 40 seconds into the fight I realized that I was ...

    I wonder how they really fought in the dark ages. This is all just guesswork and conjecture based partially on Fechtbücher from a thousand years later.

    7:57 The way he manipulates the shield is awesome, that's how actual vikings did it, they create an opener in the shield then they attack with the tip or blade of the broadsword.

    This is the type of thing you don't see in movies because the speed and complexity of it just doesn't translate in entertainment value.

      No, it's not because they can't or don't want to do it, it's to keep people dumb, to steal their time, movies have no educational value, they don't want to teach anything. They don't want to present skill to keep the people watching in their bubble and making them believe they know everything. Older movies still had some value, the only thing that comes to my mind is the duel between darth vader and Obi Wan in the first star wars movie. (of course there are some ridiculous moves in there, but it looks alot like real sparring especially in the second half of the duel) ua-cam.com/video/8kpHK4YIwY4/v-deo.html

    Ok i know i am six years late, but Winds of Winter has yet not come out so: acc to what i understood, i could be wrong please feel free to discuss: I think *Mance Rayder* has been captured by Ramsay and Reek fled with Jeyne to Stannis and there they alert him of the Karstaks. Yes that is to say that Ramsay has not yet fought with Stannis and the letter to Jon is hoax to bring him there to kill him. Can this be correct? Also share your thoughts on other plots too

    You must love Jehovah your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. You must love your neighbor as yourself. Jesus the anointed is Lord! Repent and be baptized and believe the Gospel.

      What you describes is the law. We do not have to keep the law to be saved. In fact, we all broke the law of God and have no chance of getting into heaven through our works. The only hope is believing, that Jesus Christ went on the cross and died for our sins, and that he washes us in his blood to cleanse us from sin. It is only the work of the Lord Jesus Christ that saves. No works of man, noone can work their way into heaven. Noone is righteous before God except the blood of Jesus is covering their sins. And God's name certainly is not Jehova.

    Why not turn your wrist on a center grip to keep them from manipulating your shield?

    • @AlexPanther
      @AlexPanther 3 роки тому

      That is actually something we (sort of) are doing by now. Nine years ago, when this video was made, Roland was still using a reenactment shield. Those are way heavier and unwieldyer than the actual viking shields. We aren't bending the wrist though, but moving the entire arm to reposition the shield. Otherwise we would damage our tendons and joints.

    Love this insightful and intuitively switched on accn of Viking age sword and shield. The only missing ingredient is more principle geared POV including 'mindset' governing strategy which was an all important ingredient in the days of yore.

    I apologise if this has already been said, and I feel cursed I haven’t watched this before. I don’t expect a reply but someone may read and digest this. If you were being fair you’d be pointing out that the majority of sword and shield combat focused on the point and turn. If I’ve turned the point of your sword or pole arm, then you have no Defense. On the inside (your vulnerable lateral axis- be it protected by shield or not) once the point is bypassed you have nothing. You avoid the point entirely. I understand your teaching a treatise, but please address the most potent aspect of sword or spearmanship, it’s tip. In a duel I may not be able to fence properly but I can assure you that people weren’t relying on pull and tear for damage, stabbing is much more efficient, energy and control wise. Much love.

    I came up with an idea 100s of years to late. If they would have a steel rod cross peace nearly the length of the shield. that extended about 2 inches in front of the shield ,it would catch a sword or spear ,all would is apply pressure and slide the shield up the shaft, try it great video

    this has given me an appreciation for sword and shield techniques. i kinda thought the pair was mostly based in fiction. Im wondering though, why would a sword be wielded at all when there could be spear or blunt weapons? It seems like if both men know how to use a shield and they have plate armor or real good chainmail or compressed layered leather, the sword would not even be the least bit viable if someone had more range or more blunt force.
