Generator Back Feeding Just Don't Do It

- Back feeding your electrical panel to have power during an outage is a big no no. You can seriously hurt someone trying to repair the outage. Choose the right way and invest in a manual generator transfer or an automated generlink.

It's not difficult to cut the main breaker, so that you don't harm a line worker. When the local electricians high balled me for $3000 on their estimate, I decided against a generator panel and went for backfeed.
Yah… FUCK THAT COMPANY.
Turn the main breaker OFF. That’s all you have to do.
Using the transformer in reverse you need to increase the applied voltage to the secondary which will act as primary when reverse fed. Also depending where the transformer is you would be powering many neighbors THINGS...and generator will be overloaded...this linemen stuff is mostly wrong. A step down transformer does not act like a step up one. That is assuming you did not SIMPLY turn off main breaker.
Relying on someone remembering to do that (and noone else turning it back on) is a terrible idea.
@@Paufit A step down transformer fed in reverse becomes a step up transformer.
@@Owen_loves_Butters That's only if you are a special kind of stupid. Do you forget to shut your engine in your car off too?
Open the service breaker box by your meter. Move the service breaker to the OPEN position. Close the service breaker box and put a lock through the tab that only you can open when ready to reconnect to the electric company.
If you do it per code it’s absolutely acceptable. You just need a UL listed interlock installed. This will prevent the generator and the main breaker being on at the same time.
Thanks. I think Im smart enough to make sure main is off.
$1,500 vs. $0.00 - I think I'm smart enough to remember to turn off the main breaker. But thanks for posting this video.
That's all well and good until the one time you forget. People forget things, it's just a fact of life.
@@Owen_loves_Butters There are a few people who don't make dumb mistakes. You may not know that, but there are. This phenomena is called the Dunning-Kruger Effect which is essentially really dumb people not knowing they're dumb - because they're dumb.
@@FISHH00KS Noone in the universe hasn't forgotten something important. Noone.
@@Owen_loves_Butters I have never ever forgotten to switch off the light bulb before putting a new one in.
@@focus45554 Cool. But we're not talking about whatever minor consequences would result from forgetting that. We're talking about electrocuting linemen. Even if it's a small chance, it's still not something even remotely worth risking. Trusting people to remember things has caused countless disasters in the past, and it's beyond stupid to allow that with generators.
Don’t back feed! Hire us instead!
Lmao
It's the same difference,
Just use an interlock kit. Much cheaper and easier than a generator panel and prevents back feeding into the grid.
Thank you. Exactly this.
...make a switch that only let's it to loadfeed when the mains are turns off this prevents backfeeding to the grid...and prevents damaging the generator when the power comes back on..
Along with a specific outlet for generators, that's the legal way to do it.
@@Owen_loves_Butters ..there is this newer generlink attachment to the meter that lets you connect directly to the house without any doubt of legality..check it out
Thats very expensive @@surenbono6063
@@surenbono6063 Can you give more detail than "Newer generlink attachment" ?
.. I actually only seen it in UA-cam... my grid is different a bit here ..mine those surplass wasted energy... yeah.. power by the people
If you are going to do it make sure to do it right. Take blankets pillows any kind of thin cloth and put them under outlets. Also crumple up papper and add it to the piles. It helps alot with the um power n such.
So what happens for residents with solar panels and inverters that feed the grid?
Well the electrical workers would have a record of who's feeding the grid
Solar panels should have an automatic transfer switch that prevents the back feeding into the grid.
Yep same decision I've came to from watching a bunch of these back feed video's, the only negative or bad thing is, people not shutting off the main feed to the house and back feeding into the grid. So just shut off your main breaker and you'll be good and not have to spends thousands on an electriction.
So linemen just assume there is no power in the lines and start working? Seems to me they should isolate the damaged section and then work on it.
They do. No one who works in electrical assumes anything ever. Especially linemen.
You showed this guys hide a key spot.
I saw that and thought, what if he accidently puts power to that outlet!
So there is no issue with doing it, you just have to make sure the main is off. Your title is very misleading.
