✅ Connecting Backup Gas Generator To Power The House - How To Back Feed From Outlet

  • Here's the cord and how I connect my gasoline generac generator thru a welding outlet to back feed the house power during a power outage. I actually have a "whole house" natural gas backup generator but it only powers a subset of my circuits so I use this "backup backup" generator to power up everything when desired (nat gas one does all the critical circuits). I use a Generac 5939 which is a 5500 watt gasoline generator.

    30-amp Generator Power cord: amzn.to/3hJcDgU
    I cut the female end off and installed a male plug the style I needed or you can buy something like this back feed cord: amzn.to/2TLD3GF

    Does the Generac have a floating neutral or is it bonded? since you cut the ground wire it probably doesn't matter ? Curious Im about to do the same thing at my garage. TY

    Have you installed a soft start on your AC compressor? I used an EasyStart by MicroAir and now my GenSet barely notices when it's time to start the thing. It also helps when on the mains. No more lights dimming on compressor start. LRA of over 100 amps can be rough... And of course, great video. Your "jump start" got the like. :^)

      Great suggestion. I should add those easystarts.

    I'd like to see how you made the plug adapter. I would like to make a plug for a 30a 120v generator to a 3 prong 50a welding outlet.

    • @NaterTater
      @NaterTater  2 роки тому

      You can't take a 120v generator plug and turn it into a 220v plug. To see what parts I used check out the video description for details and links to the parts.

    When you made your connector you removed the neutral wire to be able to go from 4 terminal to 3 terminal (L14-30P to 6-50P)?

    • @NaterTater
      @NaterTater  2 роки тому

      Yeah when going from 4 to 3 prong you lose a neutral/ground. They both go to the neutral bar on the breaker but the 6-50p uses just ground.

    Hi, i have a 30 amp rv outlet outside, can i change it to a 50 amp outlet and use the 50 amp cord? I want to be able to run my hvac.

    • @NaterTater
      @NaterTater  2 роки тому

      Unlikely. The wiring must be sized to support the 50amps and if it was installed as a 30amp outlet it would typical have a 30amp breaker and 30amp sized wiring.

      @kiddt1999 2 роки тому +1

      @@NaterTater yep, it does. Gonna use a dual pole 30 amp that is in there and wire it to that breaker and to the same spot the rv outlet is and run a 50amp. Yes the 30 amp is ran to the same box with a single pole 30 amp. Not going to work.

    Much better idea would be to install a manual transfer switch/interlock, so that the main and generator could not both be on at the same time. This foolproofs the system against some mistakenly turning on the main breaker while the generator runs. It also means you don’t need to use what electricians refer to as a suicide cord to adapt your generator to the house.

      Yes but for how often I use the 2nd backup gen its not worth it. Planning on a bigger whole home gen soon with full panel power on auto transfer switch.

    How did you wire the 4-prong to 3-prong cable adapter? which cable you left disconnected the ground or neutral?

    • @NaterTater

      @bigpardner I can see how you could read it that way but neutral is required to complete the circuit. The ground is a safety/reference for fault detection. That said the ground and the neutral wire from the wall outlet to the breaker box are the same and both terminate a the ground bar. So to me they are the same thing but yes in correct electrical terms the 6-50 has a neutral but no ground.

    • @NaterTater

      Yes that works too if you have a 240v electric dryer. Here in Michigan many (like mine) are nat gas/propane and just 110v.

    Never really understood the pick the circuits you want to have power route. It’s cheaper I get it with automatic SE transfer switches close to 1k. However It sucks walking into a room with no power and switching the light on twenty times in a row. Great video Nate! The thumbs down is obviously a safety nazi.

    • @NaterTater
      @NaterTater  3 роки тому +2

      My main backup gen is getting close to 20 yrs old so I chock it up to that. The new ones have automatic circuit cutoffs for things like AC if they start to overload. That way you can energize everything but still prevent overload. Thats what I want now!
