Yes!! watching it now! I had no idea that tired old song by 'that tired old hippy" (sorry) could ever be so beautiful Yes, Emma Thompson had a hand in it, but, its nonetheless POWERFUL and shattering
Yes, the film Love Actually was where I found this new recording. Stunning string arrangement. That and the slower tempo changes the whole song! While I'm not quite as old as Ms. Mitchell, I am 56, and have gained some of that wisdom that comes only with the years. I intend on having this played at my funeral.
Amazing song. I’ve never listened to the lyrics but the music bring tears to my eyes every time. Emma Thomson nails it in love actually so much. Deserves an Oscar for that scene
I loved this the first time i heard in and got the love actually sound track just for this song. It was the first time I'd heard this song and no other version will do
well said. Emma has said that the scene this was in the movie was such a discussed, viral video afterwards. Perfect song for an iconic scene. Whatever people think of "love actually", this scene is a master class in acting. BTW: I loved the movie and the soundtrack.
Absolutely LOVE this version! This is the mature, world-weary Joni looking backwards and knowing where she's been; as opposed to the somewhat confused young Lady of the Canyon of the original version looking forward, not quite sure where she's going.
I liked the original but this VERSION Cannot be improved upon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The ALL TIME BEST because the wisdom in it is so profoundly sung with the weathered voice of age and experience. Life can only be lived , any other choice is empty.Thank You for recording this in it's minor key wonder, and for posting it here.
Aaaargh. I thought this song was beautiful and had the full intention of putting it into a similar sounding playlist, but damn it makes me cry too much. That scene from love actually always makes me crumble!
People do not appreciate "Love actually", but Richard Curtis is a genius, and - whether he knows it or not - he has been reached by the Holy Spirit, ensuring that his art is transcending and carries divinity. This is in spite of the movie's crude veneer and apparent sexual content. The core of the film is a Nativity Play, and the birth of Christ ... even the Prime Minister sings "Good King Wenceslas" (a leader in public administration who became a saint through his kind deeds). The goal of the film was to remind people - after 9/11 - that airports and planes could connect and unify and deliver love, as well as death. Planes were NOT supposed to be missiles to destroy life. The Holy Spirit had to be involved in something like that, all the more because He IS love ... and truth ... and cleansing and healing and inspiration, and many other things. He reaches out to us. Emma's character, Karen, was betrayed by her husband (the Alan Rickmann character Harry). Harry comes from Henry and it means "power at home" Rowan Atkinson appears in the film ... as an angel (yes, really!) who tries to stop Harry from adultery (later also he facilitates love in young Sam(uel)). That scene takes place at the Jewellery Counter of Selfridges store in London, and it is COMPLETELY FULL of Spiritual references (including to chocolate - the food of the Gods, and yoghurt - a blessed food from India, that allowed the Old Testament characters to live for hundreds of years) Emma's role in the flm is Karen - the name means "pure"... Harry wants to cheat with the sexy Mia - that name means "mine", but also "dear" and "darling". You see that none of this by chance, whether the makers of the film realised that or not...
Best version of her best song, a true masterpiece. I get somewhat emotional each time I listen to this song. Some sort of Van Gogh painting combined with a master lyricist, 40+ years to mellow like fine wine.
Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, only then the others... and from this frame... 'Both Sides Now' and specifically THIS VERSION.... IMHO, 'Both Sides Now,' is the greatest lyrical song... ever written. You sing it Joni! (while I sit here and cry)
Rows and flows of angel hair And ice cream castles in the air And feather canyons everywhere Looked at clouds that way But now they only block the sun They rain and they snow on everyone So many things I would have done But clouds got in my way I've looked at clouds from both sides now From up and down and still somehow It's cloud illusions I recall I really don't know clouds at all Moons and Junes and Ferris wheels The dizzy dancing way that you feel As every fairy tale comes real I've looked at love that way But now it's just another show And you leave 'em laughing when you go And if you care, don't let them know Don't give yourself away I've looked at love from both sides now From give and take and still somehow It's love's illusions that I recall I really don't know love Really don't know love at all Tears and fears and feeling proud To say, "I love you" right out loud Dreams and schemes and circus crowds I've looked at life that way Oh, but now old friends they're acting strange And they shake their heads and they tell me that I've changed Well something's lost, but something's gained In living every day I've looked at life from both sides now From win and lose and still somehow It's life's illusions I recall I really don't know life at all It's life's illusions that I recall I really don't know life I really don't know life at all
We've always loved this song, have we not? I especially love this new older voice. The little girl helium sound is replaced today by a rich, sonorous maturity that is still sensual. It comes not only from the countless cigarettes she's smoked. Mostly it comes from the brave life she has led. Her painting has become richer as well.
I used to love Judy Collin's version (it gave me such comfort when I was drafted into the army back in 1969). But this version is the most moving of all - for this, the best folk song of all time. Thank you Joni.....
So hauntingly beautiful, the lyrics are so moving, and they really make you listen and relate. Amazing voice, don't think anyone else could quite cut this song like Joni. ❤
It needed a whole lifetime to become what it is now: A diamond, with all the rainbow colours a voice could ever have, and all the feeling a heart could know with the years.
I just love to listen to the 1970 Joni Mitchell singing then this one with a mature voice. Both masterpieces, but this one brings tears to my eyes every time.
So lovely. I've loved this for so long. Never comment on this youtube shit...but this is just so stirring and haunting and real. I am moved to tears whenever I hear this version.
It’s so sad but so very endearing. I want to hug her because I remember that feeling from years ago. It feels like it won’t end but it will get easier and better. One day it will be a memory in a song. 😉I love her expression of it. 💖
Wonderful song, extraordinary version...Fulls the universe with a beautiful soul singing the reminiscence of her life...Very touching, very beautiful...The way I feel right now at 50...;-)
i have had my heart broken by someone i thought loved me but she was not ready to date, .... so sad.. people need to heal before moving on.. this song...
Beautiful... Because she is mature now. She lived life, a full life... She is now singing it now from a different angle. She has come full circle. Life is no illusion it is almost over and she is looking back. Beauty is in the end. Wait and see.👁🗨🎡⛅🌤🌥🌦🌧
I've always thought this a beautiful song but didn't like the way the young Joni Mitchell sang it. Just watched Love Actually for the first time and couldn't believe it was her. Quite moving.
Does anyone know if this version can be found on Spotify and why it sounds so different than the official version? Her voice is so much lower/raspier on this one!
...but now it's just another show and you leave 'em laughing when you go and if you care, don't let them know don't give yourself away" Fame is vastly over-rated and given to far too many - but genius such as this will survive when we are no longer a memory, or even dust.
The absolute best version. Emma Thomson plays her scenes during this song to perfection in the movie.
Yes!! watching it now! I had no idea that tired old song by 'that tired old hippy" (sorry) could ever be so beautiful

Marika Maidla Love Actually
One of the best but saddest songs ever sung, with so much emotion. A true classic.

I remember being so in love and feeling that way…the dizzy dancing way u feel. I use to sing this to my kids when they were babies.

This scene of Emma have played a significant role in my life , it changed my love and life perspective forever since that day I watched ❤️

But clouds got in my way
I've looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down and still somehow

Moons and Junes and Ferris wheels
The dizzy dancing way that you feel
As every fairy tale comes real
I've looked at love that way
But now it's just another show
And you leave 'em laughing when you go
And if you care, don't let them know
Don't give yourself away
I've looked at love from both sides now
From give and take and still somehow
It's love's illusions that I recall
I really don't know love
Really don't know love at all
Tears and fears and feeling proud
To say, "I love you" right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds
I've looked at life that way
Oh, but now old friends they're acting strange
And they shake their heads and they tell me that I've changed
Well something's lost, but something's gained
In living every day
I've looked at life from both sides now
From win and lose and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all
It's life's illusions that I recall
I really don't know life
I really don't know life at all
Thank you, sincerely.

yes, agree. Not every artists takes an older song and does it again when older. It's a Masterpiece.
Well said!
I used to love Judy Collin's version (it gave me such comfort when I was drafted into the army back in 1969). But this version is the most moving of all - for this, the best folk song of all time. Thank you Joni.....
RIP Alan Rickman
Wow! Powerful, moving and unforgettable. This is what a mature, thoughtful life sounds like.
So hauntingly beautiful, the lyrics are so moving, and they really make you listen and relate. Amazing voice, don't think anyone else could quite cut this song like Joni. ❤
I'm in a hotel room and I don't know how this song got in my head or how I identified it but it's 3:30 am and I feel like crying.
I feel you.. Iistening to this song now.. crying.

I love this song the words have so much meaning
I recently read "Reckless Daughter," the biography of Joni Mitchell. Highly recommend it. She is a genius.
It needed a whole lifetime to become what it is now: A diamond, with all the rainbow colours a voice could ever have, and all the feeling a heart could know with the years.
Wow, beautifully said
@@lizzybeth22 Thank you, dear Elizabeth b. Time flies...

life experience perfectly sung.
How old was she in this recording?
Totally my fave version! So soft and feeling. Makes me want to cry though. Beautiful. Her voice is amazing!
Most heartfelt version filled with soul.
Some singers actually sound even better as they age, and Joni Mitchell certainly does.
What a beautiful and haunting song can't help but tear up after this one
She is magical

❤❤ I could listen to this version 100 times in a row. And never grow tired of it
How I love this version so much
I heard this in Love Actually after a wife was hurt by her husband. Tear jerker. No woman deserves to be betrayed like that.
my life x
No man either
I just got betrayed like that and I am a man and I promise it hurts as much even if I am no woman
Same. I could never do that to someone!
Everytime I hear this I sob, like gut wrenching cry. This one really hits especially as I get older
The final scene of After Life. We are all but a passing moment in history and live on in the memories of those who loved us.
Music at it's best.
Open and sincere musical express.
Thanks for the gift

I always thought the original version was pretty, but this one tears me up.
Realmente amor 💔
I believe it’s Cassandra Wilson that sings this in the Love Actually version. It’s a beautiful version, worthy of the artist that originated it.
사랑합니다..
Wowwwwwwwwww
Beautiful... Because she is mature now. She lived life, a full life... She is now singing it now from a different angle. She has come full circle. Life is no illusion it is almost over and she is looking back. Beauty is in the end. Wait and see.👁🗨🎡⛅🌤🌥🌦🌧
