What's The Worst that Could Happen?!

- After a couple inches of rain we decided to switch over to corn to work the kinks out of the grain dryer and bins. The first 3 loads have yielded pretty poorly. We will switch back to beans this evening and tomorrow. #Harvest2021

Zach Johnson, the “Millennial Farmer” is a 5th-generation farmer who’s spent his life growing, working, and learning on his family’s farm. His wit and dry sense of humor appeal to children and adults alike. A product of the millennial generation, his appreciation of new technology blends with his old-fashioned work ethic, and he offers a unique ability to deliver his message in a way that resonates with lifelong farmers as well as those with no knowledge of agriculture.
With growing consumer awareness about where their food comes from, Zach has identified the need for an independent voice from the front lines of agriculture. Zach actively promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences in the agriculture world while providing farmer-to-farmer education to help facilitate a collaborative conversation between farmers and the public.

“I hope I don’t knock over any of this corn” that absolutely sent me 😂😂
U
Zack, I used to build those bins. The side gates we tore them apart and welded the set ring onto the steel rod inside the gate. That way you don’t have to tear open the floor! Best to do when empty, “trust me” ha.
Zach saying "what's the worst that could happen?" is like the new guy in the unit saying that it's "really quiet". Just asking for trouble.
Zach is so dry. That was a perfect Forrest Gump at the end. It's kind of nice of Zach to giving us something to smile about while they are bringing in such a poor harvest. I know all our fingers are crossed for a bumper harvest next year to average things out. 🤞🏻
Your "Fan Club" is still here.😊
I appreciate your "humor" and being lighthearted with the tough growing season this last year.
2 days in a row, that's how you know shits getting real
Your children’s smiles make everyone smile!
“Gee I hope I didn’t knock over any of that corn”! 😂😂
LOL @ “Used an impressive amount of screws and ran out of patience”. We’ve all been there.
Speaking of two machines: You could keep the 9870 through harvest, at least through soybean harvest, and sell it after.
We have a custom operator close to me. They operate 4 Forage harvesters. Every April, they buy a new one, and run 5 through the season. Then in November, they sell the oldest and repeat. So they only pay off on 4 in the off season, and never have any that are too old. 👍
That's a nice little "Battle-rhythm" they got going on...Capital intense the first 5 years or so until you get everything in Sync.
I would guess as the new boss took over they were running the 4-5 machines and then he just started to exchange the oldest/broken one and buy an replacement.
Maybe the guy knows how to write it off so the irs is happy
@@mwnciboo The place have been going for over 50 years, this is just their latest adjustment ;)
That dickey John moisture tester throws a code if you get a piece of kernel stuck inside. Give it a tap or two and the grain will dislodge. I had mine do that a few times, it happens!
That really is an impressive amount of screws! Good job, Zach, Good job.
Love that you went and got the kids for a ride before bed.
"Gee, I hope I didn't knock over any of that corn" Now that was rich.
It's nice you can joke about it a little. I mean the alternative is to just sit down and cry. (I've been there before).
Hope your yield is better than expected.
Take care.
I think it is so great that you took the time to pick up the girls for a combine ride and then took them back to the house. What memories are made of.
Zack I have to tell you Man your two kids they put a big smile on my face and my heart oh my goodness such a precious little ones you are a blessed man Zack
It is so Cool you bond with your Kids. Glad you are teaching them the life of Farming. God Bless you and Family.
Remember...it's not the fall that kills you. It's that sudden stop when you reach the bottom!
I love all of you, ur farm, ur kids, ur wife and u dude! I've got my fingers crossed that you at least do good enough this year with your yield 😊 take care all of you x
You missed a great dad joke “The combine and head are doing a reel good job!”
Love the harvest updates! Keep them coming! Good luck!
You are blessed with a great family. Nice video.
Get some PTFE valve packing material, comes in a roll, just cut to fit and slip it into the ring ends. Less mess and lasts a long time. You are right though the ring let the pipe ends spread, only way corn is getting into the ring.
There was me thinking Zach was going to give us a demonstration of his singing skills and an Elvis impression (a little less talk, a little more action.)
Your thinking of Toby Keith
@@tannerphillips5303 I was thinking the same thing. Took me a second. Like wait that ain’t right
If Zach uses the same sarcasm with the goddess of the home, as he does with the goddess of wind. He's probably spot-on with the end of that statement. LOL
@@tannerphillips5303 Toby Keith's rendition was released November 1993 and was a top chart single is probably the reason you think he was the original actually Hank Williams Jr release the original in February of 1992.
Actually Elvis Presley's release in 19 68 was a little less conversation. That is the one us old farts remember! LOL
With all that equipment, have you ever been using some after not using it awhile and forget how to use it, or program or not put some settings correctly? I'm amazed at all of the technology involved with the tractors and the mechanics on the silos.
All the time!
Have you thought of wearing a safety harness when you are way up high?
Your kids are going to remember riding with dad for the rest of their lives. You are blessed to have a job that you can share with them.
Hi Zac you could use the vhf radios you all ready have put a repeater on your grain leg get the radios set up to the repeater and put the transmit frequency of the repeater in as a talk around channel when you are out of range of the repeater or it goes down.We are grain farmers over here in Australia we have two repeaters one is on a 100ft tower and covers 50 to 60km other one is on a hill and gets more than 100km our repeaters are in the uhf band 470 MHz the reason for this is over here we have uhf cb radios as well they used to have 40ch and now have moved to 80 ch all farms use this service over here but is to congested at busy times like harvest, planting cotton pick as well as the trucking industry and general users. Our radios have the uhf cb channels fitted and our licensed repeaters frequency we still use HF radios here as well they cover the whole of Australia our cell phone network is the most useless setup I have ever used or seen yet Constance drop outs out of service or not working at all we are lucky to have as well a HF radio network called VKS737 it has frequency’s to cover more than 3000km the whole country is possible monitored 24 hours a day in conjunction with the royal flying doctor service I have heard all kind of emergency medical break downs and other problems in the the outback with help could be days away. Our repeaters and Hf radios play a big part in our farming operation over here would be without it
I farm in southwest Iowa beans yields are running 70-75 bushel an ace got the rains at the right time here best beans ever I have seen
Loved the kids on the combine; thanks for showing that to us. Nothing quite like family to bring a little joy. Improved my day for sure!
Love your Dad’s truck! She’s a beaut.
If you guys got a repeater on top of your grain bin man you guys would have amazing range on those radios even with the handhelds
Its not the falling that hurts Zack, its the blooming landing that does!!
funny how falling feels like flying just for a little while
Two words of wisdom for ya, Gorilla Tape, try it, and you will never use silver duct tape again!!!
Gray = crappy.
Little rain sun and the tape is flapping in the wind. Gorillas tape is good if put a clean surface.
I just tried gorilla glue am waiting for cure time of 24 hours 😜
@@timrowland1490
Wet the parts first. By the time you finished your second beer. The glue is 90% cured
What a rich feeling that must be, harvesting with your children at armlength. Golden moments.
Enjoyed that video .......................................getting exciting, feels like Christmas with the harvesting.
Can’t quit watching. Would love to spend the season working with you all. Love what you do.
Wow just an incredible video it's cool to see you spending time with your kids and working on the farm I'm glad to see your dad is doing well
Stick a repeater up on the grain bins structure so you can talk to each other better on the VHF or UHF.
Only 5 miles apart, they shouldn’t have any issues anyway.
nice video. finally harvest. was a nice surprise on my birthday. to see a harvest video. nice to see that your children like to go with you in the evening
I love how Didge is posed like the Ferrari prancing pony logo in the thumbnail.
🤣🤣🤣🤣 Holy crap, good catch!
Glad to see your dad is well.
Watching your show, nearly on a daily basis all the 6.633km long way from Denmark.
Great videos! It's nice to follow you, your family and the daily work on the farm 1o1 in some wide showing videos
Me and my church has praying for you and your family and the farm and Jim we pray for a good harvest God bless you all
For those locking collars, bring a drill bit the same size as the tap for the screw and add a small divot for the collar lock screw to get into. That way it’s not relying on clamping force so much.
Good luck!! Hope your machines work well this year. At least you got two combines running and NEITHER of them is going to need repairs (fingers crossed)
We have one drag conveyor that’s made up mostly of duct tape and old license plates 😂 it’s one of those it’s a small set up on a smaller farm and it usually just catches the overflow grain that it’s not looking like we will have this year...
We had one of those old Mickey mouse legs and used it for years..Finally tore it town.. It Maybe unload 600 bushels per hour. Then it would start back legging..
@@davehughesfarm7983 The leg is fine it’s smaller and older, it’s the drag from bin top to bin top lol. Thankfully but sadly it’s not looking like we I’ll need many of those bins at that set up this year as the Main farm set up should hold it all
@@davehughesfarm7983 it was probably getting old and tired and needed to be tore down anyway. Because Walt told Mickey to shut down production on legs back when they had the Witch Hunt for commies, and other perversions. That was quite a while ago! So that system was getting pretty old. LOL. When we'd have a bad year on the farm and ranch my dad always told me don't lose your sense of humor. Because if you do, the important things you start to lose next.!
Your Lucky my one is made of metal 😂
I know I there are stresses in you life we don’t see, the last few minutes of this video will make stresses go away! Your kids are cool, I love your work!
Very nice Forrest impersonation there at the end. I could just see Forrest as a farmer there for a brief moment.
Looked to see if anyone else commented on this yet, you beat me to it Sir.
For the ones that don't know what Zack is talking about he has a CF dryer which means continuous flow that's why he said he had to check the corn sample coming out the back of the dryer
Thanks for the great video. It was interesting and enjoyable.
Great to start seeing harvest videos again. Been a while. Lots of items to check on your bin setup. Looks like you got it all going. Nice bun and dryer setup. The dogs are busy with the mice coming out of conveyors. Keeps em busy. Interesting that you have beans and corn going at the same time. Thanks for taking the time to let the kids ride for a while. Good education for them. Will be anxious to see the honey bee header run in the field compared to the JD header. Appreciate you doing that. Glad you climbed up to the top of bin system. Heights are not my favorite thing. But you do what you got to do. Amen to that. About it for now. Looking forward to the next video. Thanks. You all take care and be safe.
The Iowa farm boy from years ago.
You should get a safety harness for when you have to go up there, you can hook yourself into something.I'd guess the landing would not be comfortable.
I fell 11 feet. Went head first. The worst was a torn liver and a broken back. That retired me.
I will second that remark. Get several, keep one in your vehicle and one or two in your dryer shack. Not only can they save a life, but it can make high altitude repairs less stressful and easier.
Going to be an awesome sight the day your son and daughters are running the combines and you can sit on your porch and watch.
Awesome harvest video. You are a funny man Mr. Johnson. Keep up the great work.
I was working at an elevator and an overhead drag plugged and blew the cover off, I was picking corn out of my tool bag for a couple years afterwards.
Waiting in line hauling beans and figured why not watch it
Hey Zac, I'm from otter lake michigan. I've been watching your videos for years. I raise hay and cattle on my farm. In your slow season and travels we'd welcome a visit from you. Keep up all the good work. Your videos are the highlight of our day.
Zach, you need a fall arrest harness when you are up that elevator leg! Sure beats hitting the ground... They sell stirrup style straps that drop down so you can stand instead of dangling
I have a similar grain system across the road from us. Why do I watch it on here?! LoL 😂😆
Hope harvest goes well for you!
I can tell you love your family!
"Adhesive weld whip" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Great Humor at 100 feet in the air 😉
Good evening. On your KW with the N14 in it. Your slow crank is a starter.
Down here in Mississippi and Arkansas we irrigate corn and beans with polypipe which means we plant on raised beds and the irrigation water flows down the middles. When we cut beans we always cut diagonally across the rows. It feeds better and since we have fire ants the beans feeding in at an angle helps the keep the fire ant mounds raked off of the header.
Was the pit dry this year? My favorite part watching you get ready for harvest is cleanning out that pit! LOL
At 8:31 You'll see the control box Zach is working on is from Convey-Air System by Farm Fans, Inc. from my hometown Indianapolis, Indiana.
Zach, I think what you were looking for was “A little less conversation, a little more action please” from an Elvis Presley song called A Little Les Conversation released in 1970
Good to see that harvest is started. Good luck, hope your yields are better than you expected.
Good attitude Zach, considering the weather you had for the crops. Hope God blesses you and yours even more this year!!
If there's anything I've learned from watching top gear all these years it's that title is a recipe for disaster.
The other is "how hard can it be?"
@@jmacd8817 That's what she said! Sorry, couldn't resist. :-)
Still, it could be worse...
Just got an ad whilst watching your video, it was your truly millennial farmer talking about the Dakota micro cameras!
Good dad taking the kids for rides in the combine!!!!!!!
I understand may think we be need hustle and bustle but I'm fine with you talking I'm learning allot very interesting stuff
Your kids may not realize it now, but they have the best childhood ever !
Anna has 4 Paw Drive !
Your kids are precious. Love 'em!
Hey Zack I can't get enough of your videos. When are we going to see Old Glory flying on the augers of those beautiful John Deere combines on your farm.
I understand Lankota makes the flag pole mounts that are on the two JD combines of the Larson Farms my second favorite farming family.
Good luck on everything y’all have in the fields and I pray for y’all have a great corn and soybeans harvest
Also LOL to the now fully lite up "STOP " sign on the driveway. But seriously its sad you have to have that.
Love your vids. My grandma grew up on a farm in the Brandon area.....11 sisters. All but two married farmers in the area. Also spent alot of time at Viking speedway over the years. Most likely seen you race there back in your early days. Drove up to duck hunt last Friday (9-24) think I seen you vuys taking out beans north of your farm along Hwy 55, I was the goofball waving from a black Silerado
I really like your interaction with the kids!
I must say at 0 bushels per acre a Deere combine doesn’t throw much out the back
🤣🤣 that's true. I ground-truthed it.
Love the Forest Gump reference 😂 I’m 35 and only watched that movie for the 1st time recently
In the ring you have the leak at, it looks like you are missing some bolts in the flange that sits under the collar. You mention that it pulled apart im guessing them bolts would bring that back together tight.
When you were up there examining that leaky grain hoist pipe, i muttered "Fix it with duct tape". But I didn't expect you to actually pull out a roll of duct tape! That got a laugh. You must be a Red-Green fan too.
Got to love it when you first fire up the head and the reel wants to take off down the field
Fun times with the kids! Love the crack about your self driving equipment, too funny.
His dogs are so free! Those have to be some of the happiest dogs I've ever seen. I mean they just get to run around that whole property for miles! Pretty good life for a dog. I wonder where they sleep LOL
They have beds in the heated garage and can go in and out of the doggy door as they please
And they keep the burglar population under control.
Great Millennial Farmer Video, thanks for sharing
I love your harvest videos. They always get me wound up and rearing to go!
Getting your girls point of view made my heart ❤️🥲
Put some bins underneath your grain dryer to catch the spillage, some IBC cut in half
There is nothing better than having my girls in the tractor with me, always makes me smile even when I’m in a bad mood.
Pretty awesome all the kids are showing an interest in the farm!
Your kids are growing up so fast pretty soon they be going off to college. I glad you taking video spend time with them now
Come to west North Dakota where, this year, the corn actually is as tall as those beans. 🥲
Zach, Duct Tape is great and all, but I recommend getting a few rolls of High Temperature Flue tape. I've used that in a pinch when I didn't have a welder handy. It last for years. May never need to fix it right.
My dad says "There's nothing more permanent than a temporary repair that works."
The leak in the conveyor is because the bolts holding the seal came out... I could see 3 missing bolts.
You can see a bolt that came out sitting on the side opposite of Zach. =) 02:38
"Im pretty tired, think ill check the dryer and go home now" .....nice one Gump
Great video. Best farmer on you tube. And I watch all the farming videos on UA-cam. 👍❤️😁.
Just ran first soybeans tonight here in southeast IA with my new to me wrinkley case IH 8010 with John Deere 635 hydra flex. Worked great …..Headsight conversion kit worked perfectly.
How wonder how mini times jim will get stuck this year 🤣🤣
None unless they get some rain!!
Love your dad's red truck.great vid forest.🤣🤣
and in Colombia my grandpa used to fix the same way ....
