Zach Johnson, the “Millennial Farmer” is a 5th-generation farmer who’s spent his life growing, working, and learning on his family’s farm. His wit and dry sense of humor appeal to children and adults alike. A product of the millennial generation, his appreciation of new technology blends with his old-fashioned work ethic, and he offers a unique ability to deliver his message in a way that resonates with lifelong farmers as well as those with no knowledge of agriculture.
With growing consumer awareness about where their food comes from, Zach has identified the need for an independent voice from the front lines of agriculture. Zach actively promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences in the agriculture world while providing farmer-to-farmer education to help facilitate a collaborative conversation between farmers and the public.

What I have learned from watching the Millennial Farmer: The folks who farm are HARD working, kind-hearted, and have a passion for the land. They face CONSTANT adversity with determination to keep tilling the soil, harvesting the crops, and maintaining all the equipment. They embrace new technology for the sake of running and having a better farm operation. Farmers are good, caring neighbors. Farmers are our heritage. A simple 'thank you' doesn't seem to say enough, but it is heart-felt and sincere. Thank you to all of our farmers. ❤️️👍💪 P.S. What I said....for livestock farmers, too. 😊
Yes Sir, Farmer/Ranchers are embattled in a constant stream of adversity.....Cursed but mostly blessed..Thank you for the Thank you...
Just doing what we love to do!! And yes, absolutely, the livestock farmers bust their tails. I can't imagine dealing with this cold constantly when things break.
You have not a clue just how bad it really is lol I'm a 4 generation farmer an it gets stuffer every year
You could not have said it better friend. Thanks for that. And thanks to all the farmers that keep us fed.
I’m not a farmer but I sure do have a love for farmers and tractors I grew up in the country and my house is surrounded by a corn field I used to and still do sometimes ride in his tractor when he tills plows and harvests crops my stepmoms dad is also a farmer and I love helping him when I can thanks to all of the hard working farmers that busy their butts to keep us fed
“What’s the torque spec on this?” “Yup” 😂🤣😂
Using a "standard metric" wrench, or a "universal stripper", that size castle nut looks like a single grunt torque spec, maybe a two grunt spec.
German specs... "good-n-tight"
Lol
@@littlejason99 My German always friend said with his best thick accent,
Gud-en-tite"
Or until the elbow clicks!
"What's the torque spec on this?"
"Yep."
"That's what I thought."
Hahahahahaha
Zac , you alright ?
Memories. Back as a kid in NoDak dad bought a big 31 ft cultivator (we called it a tool bar, also known as a chisel plow) that kept losing wheels. Dad figured out that the manufacturer should have put grease zirks (yep, that’s what we called them) in the hubs. So he stocked up on roller bearings, races, zirks etc and taught his number 1 hired man (me) how to pack bearings drill and thread the hubs etc and away I went. Good times. Thanks for the videos, they always remind me of what a fantastic childhood I had.
Forrest. Forrest Gump. "I'm pretty tired. Think I'll go home now."
"...and so I just started cultivating"

And then, for no particular reason, I just starting tilling.
And here I get to be up when your heading to bed

Kenny Rogers, You picked a fine time to leave me loose wheel, lol
Thats funny right there.
dude i love that i hope he pins that
Lol
Quoted by Daddy Cornstar on a video not too long ago on his son's channel, Cole the Cornstar.....funny then, funny now. 😊😍

Right stuff! We use that like we use duct tape and wd40!
"Jim atleast its cold out" *Jim gives death glare*......*me* absolutely dying 😂😂 I lost it 😂
I laughed when I saw that as well 🤣🤣
@@MillennialFarmer That was an awesome moment, chuckled a bit on that one xD
In that time lapse I could tell Jim was doing all the work. I think Jim needs a raise.
You've got the perfect farmers outlook in that it's always going to get better and no matter how bad it is, it could always be a whole lot worse. I find myself missing farming watching this, but as I'm watching this, drinking a Hop Valley Alphadelic IPA late at night, I soon realize, I'm warm, not checking the dryer, not freezing my stones getting 4-5 hours of sleep. You're classic plow jockey and I appreciate you sharing the life with us barstool jockeys.
“You no want breakfast?!” I lost it 😂
happy gilmore and forest gump reference in one video.. fantastic lol

I realize this is from two years ago (currently binge watching like mad - steadily getting caught up) but I can sure relate to the fixing of that wheel. The clock is ticking and you do whatever you gotta to get stuff fixed and rolling - NOW. Nice ingenuity using the ripper to lift that wheel to get it into the service truck.
You need cole the cornstar to come over lol get you thyroid checked you might have sometimers lol long hard day thanks for letting me be a part of it and Thank You to all who serve and for all the sacrifices for us to be free Canada and the USA 🌺🇺🇸🍁👍😉
"Hey Zach what's that laying in the field out there in front of you?"
"Exactly what you think it is..." 🤣
Stihl pole saw, best investment you will ever make.
Rather get echo...new stihl pole saw is pure shite...
I would rather cut with that husky the way he was cutting then use anything that stihl makes.
The modular trimmer is better
Exactly what I was going to say. Can't live without mine.
I bought a Stihl pole saw about 15 years ago. Never had a problem.
You and Dad might consider Stihl battery driven arbor saw...no mix, no fuss and no starting difficulty in cold weather. I think it would be a great addition the cab of any Deere, maintenance truck or your fuel trailer. Wish you well as you keep us informed of situations a day or more ahead of when it hits here in north-central Illinois. Wife and I considering a return to farming within the next year and needed a little refresher since leaving the farm in 1990. Boy! electronics have really changed the game but hard work and thinking are still the backbone of rural life.
Born in 94.... got the I'll go home now bit perfectly cuz that's just an awesome movie
Thanks for clarifying the Rainforest concerns. 😂😂👍
My old man would call that “field torqued”. Heard that when working on the semi’s with him.
Better then pissed off torque. Not even an impact will break that bolt loose.
That's the definition of a crappy day, but you boys kept smiling. Thank you for sharing the ups and downs.
Fun is when you get up and for about a week you can get to know your family. Not fix a thing, just give your back a rest. I have been there and done that. my neighbor is from somewhere minn. I will ask him but he has been watching the football games. He said it got colder there than here in alaska. Fairbanks has been -25F. for a week or more and it only fifteen degrees here. Tough to go out in weather like this. Dogs love it after it being high seventies or eighties. Hope the rest of harvest goes better for you and the propane issue gets better. I don't know why the shortage, I don't watch the news cause it is too depressing.. good luck
It's been a rough season for alot of farmers with all the weather stuff and now the propane shortage. I thank you for the service you do
Anyone know why there is a propane shortage? Are the Plants down? The States are loaded with natural gas because of Fracking right now and it is a short hop to North Dakota.
Clay White
Just supply and demand. Everyone is filling up
@@ClayinSWVA it's just a greater demand than normal. I think it had to do with the wetter conditions during harvest
Love your videos man, I myself grew up on a farm in the southwestern part of Iowa. We combine corn and beans, have a hog confinement, and raise cattle. Me and my dad talk about your videos all the time! Keep up the good work and hope your winter is full of a vacation!
You asked after everything getting stuck a if viewers were farmers or not. Well I’m not a farmer but have loved watching your videos. It’s a way to see how hard working are American farmers are. How I found your channel was just looking around you tube for something to watch. Keep the great videos coming and thanks for all you and you family and co workers are doing.
At 8:00 I heard the unmistakable sound of a locomotive air horn, probably giving a _ _ O _ for a grade crossing. Nice touch!!
The greatest hit from Exile.....didnt know it was about farming. Makes perfect sense now.
The work is hard, I am impressed with what you do.
8:45 "Jim, at least it's cold out." The look on his face - BAHAHA!
was supposed to get some work done tonight but i clicked on one of these.. now its 6 videos in, and im emotionally invested in this. Half a day of LP left and its a 15 hour wait for more!? that is NO GOOD
Good idea with the exhaust from your pickup to warm the fuel nozzle
Better idea don't ever live somewhere that fuel freezes. I used to cuss our cold but our winter is his early fall.
@@tysleight That's exactly how you don't get sh*t done! Wussy's live like that.
@@frankvandendool882 not to be the voice of reason let's look at $$$ just how much will just this one farm spend on heating this year. How much time will they spend on keeping things running due to cold and snow. So why the frozen north is " getting sh$t done" we in mild climates will be cussing the lows in the teens with highs in the high 40's and flying south to lay on a sunny beach with the time& money we saved on not burning propane or moving snow. So put on your gloves and keep warm and I'll put on Levi's and a t-shirt and go start working. Fyi the high for every day so far in Nov has been low 60 and 🌞.
@@frankvandendool882 live like what? I can only assume enjoying a beach vacation or the not shoveling snow. I'll take that insult any day with a smile on my tan face. Anyway peace out I've got to load the bike for a long weekend of ridding in the sun and sand.
Mr. Johnson; so many farmers get in a hurry when making repairs that proper installation procedures are not used. May I suggest SKF's Installation and Maintenance for Bearings that will detail proper handling (do not throw bearings around) and installation (do not beat an outer race into position with a ball peen hammer), a dead blow hammer is preferred or shrink the component. It will improve the reliability of the bearing.
I agree, when they did the axle nut I wondered if that was setting pre load on the bearing. If so it really should be torqued to spec. Giving the wheel a test spin can let you know you're in the ballpark but requires familiarity with how the hub feels without the wheel on..
Great singing Zach mate you should have a record deal lol it is what it is 😂😂😂🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺
Zack it is too bad about all the harvesting issues but if it is any consolation you still have a great sense of humor about it. Good luck with the rest of harvest.
It's pretty sad you have to explain the tree trimming
lumpy1603 trees have feelings too😢🤣
@@MrPeak111 folks don't realize we actually have more trees now than we did a century ago in the USA. And that trees are a crop.
@@MrPeak111 , u did notice he said invasive
We have a mulching head for our 333G. Tree limbs on the edges of our fields are never a problem anymore. We only did our fields for the 1st year or so, now I do our neighbors and a few other farms in our county. Head has paid for itself.
@@kieranbudke2343 Boxelder trees. They are a weed of the tree world here in the upper midwest. We have to cut back the ones that bend over the fence rows every year. If you don't, pretty soon your 40 acre field is 29 acres...
Love the Forest Gump line man. Hope yall are almost done. Be safe
3:56 what a plug
I need a new video!..nothing on tv!
And not enough snow yet to ride sleds!! Great work, you are a natural.
Of course the magnet didn't stick, it wasn't ironwood.
Heyy love the videos and nothing compares to new gloves 😂
We haven't had much luck getting propane here. Our supplier was supposed to get some delivered over the weekend & it never showed up & he didn't hear anything from the driver or company as to why it didn't show. Good luck with the rest of harvest. At least it's supposed to be some warmer temps coming.
The part where you paused and said you were going to do a time lapse, reminded me of Christmas vacation and cousin Eddie! LOL
That was the longest day I've ever watched you have.
In parts of the country like that, you call a neighbor and he's there in 5 minutes. Out west where I am (prior Californian) a car can be overturned in the ditch and on fire, while 6,000 people a minute drive right by it.
pretty simple case of 'do I know you?' Just remember that everyone can only deal with so many people a day. When you only have about 3 direct neighbors you are more likely to help than when that number is 10 in the same building. 150 in the street. You don't have time nor energy to deal with that many people and their problems each day.
The worst thing is that those who possibly stop,
do so to pick up the phone and film the accident.
Its colder than cold out and you still have the motivation to say "THUNDER" every time you pump fuel! lolol
I hauled beets for JP the last few years they did sugar beets one of the best guys to work with always made the shift go by fast
“It’s just the head is stuck in there”
That’s what she said.
🤣🤣 well played
Colton Sprague best comment on here
3:28 they don't make those magnets like they used to
Nah, you just need to buy the Tesla Magic Magnet.
The lakes are not frozen. They just have some ice already.
You might figure . A Swede using a Swedish Chain Saw. Great video as usual.
Bearing pre load is 50ft pounds back off 1/4 turn for ur next one u have.. u have had 2 tires come apart and from the look of the video you guys are installing them to tight from the installation I saw reason they come apart
fuel nozzle frozen? bring your pickup over to it and stick it in the exhaust and in a few mins it will be good to go.
$20 map gas torch. Works everytime!
I’m sure that won’t cause any problems 🤔😂😂
Sure if the hose reaches and goes to get a ladder...
Was thinking the same thing, the combine exhaust is close, do it with my skidsteer when the nozzle freezes, works every time nice little trick.
Until it catches fire someday, and then what?!
Being as busy as a bee these day Zach.Don't work to hard!🐝
Glad you got your semi hub fixed that bites when they go out
The sign said "No Customers" not "No Farmers."
"So it fixed itself" as a true millennial would say to a problem.
Excellent Happy Gilmour performance!
There's ONE thing I hate more than being cold and that's being hot!
We been out of dryer gas for a few days. Can’t get any
Dos the service truck comes with the green machines when you buy those?
ive owned fishing boats, saw mills, and biomass dryers, planers and all sorts of equipment. Its so fun to watch others fix s.it and find the humor in it all. I look forward to every episode. keep up the videos.

Intro: New Gloves, Old Gloves, Cab Corn.
Achievement unlocked:
Loose a tire before 10 acers
lots of implements coming right from the factory with very little grease in the wheel bearings. So far we have had three premature failures due to lack of wheel bearing grease. By this past end of summer we have run everything through the shop right down to our skid steer trailer.
You are a good guy, stay safe and good luck with the harvest.
Almost sounds like a "green people" issue!
(Tire falling off)
Zach, is propane an issue in northern mid-west, or is it everywhere. This sounds so nuts.
As far as I know there's a propane shortage in Iowa as well
Pretty much whole upper Midwest they reduced regulations on haulers in multiple states because of the shortage mn ia wi nd mo etc
@@johnslife6669 As far as im concerned the hos regulations are a joke because the feds can cancel them any time they feel the need to. So it tells me that the regs are about control and not safety.
If the gas companies would start drilling more gas wells here in Southeast Ohio it wouldn't be a problem.
I would say that the problem isn't shortage of gas itself but rather delivering it at rates that farmers burn it.
Sweet happy Gilmore reference. Awesome movie
meanwhile about 350 miles away there are gas plants in the basin that are only running half a day(or at half cap. if at all) or so because they can't get it shipped out fast enough.
you know if that was a Milwaukee impact it coulda got it done
More like a makita
Katie Eaton a makita puts out about half what a Milwaukee does.
That’s not even the newest dewalt either
The Milwaukee puts out the most torque of any of the 18-20v tools, 1400ft-lbs for the half inch I’m pretty sure
Jack Watt the dewalt puts out 1200 breakaway torque so I’m sure it could have broken them loose
QUESTION ZACH: How many truckloads of LP do you go through at harvest typically?
Depends on alot of variables. This year alot more
I have a 1,000 gallon tank at my house for hot air ballooning. On a average flight we use between 65 and 100 gallons per flight depending on how much weight in the basket and how hot it is outside. We use quite a bit less in the winter then in the summer. I think he has a 12,000 gallon tank of propane at the farm and I believe he used 60,000 gallons of propane last year but I could be wrong.
centsless fabrication I work for a propane company and if he contracted a price and using 60,000 gallons they should be all over it to keep him full
@@nealfigary3288 its out of their control.
@@nealfigary3288 you would think but they can't deliver what they can't get themselves. I go through 1,000 gallons of LP weekly and now with the weather cooling off I have flights schedule for the morning and at 2 in the afternoon before the sun goes down
🎼 Rollin, Rollin, Rollin in the corn field.
i love the little movie quotes put in
Just me or does that corn head take forever to fold?
And where's Nick Welker and his that wouldn't of happened if it was a red machine. Hahaha
We hotwash our dryer while it is running every couple of days. You wouldn't believe how much more the dryer will breath and you'll use less propane. Basically you push the fine grit out.
Hey Forest,Most people I know think farmers are rich, But you'd never see them doing what your doing, the hours ,the conditions, the dirt, believe it or not lots of people are allergic to dirt, and working 18 hour days
