When I was 12 years old, after reading "Marva Collin's Way" I wrote her a letter saying that I would like to work with her one day. I was so nervous writing that letter - didn't want to make any spelling or grammar mistakes. She ANSWERED me. Told me to work hard, prepare myself and call her when I'm older and it "would be a pleasure" to have me work with her. This letter was a driver! That reinforcement! I am so thankful for that letter - a true teacher and leader and inspirer.
Marva Collins is the epitome of what excellent teaching is. I am so grateful that I had an opportunity to meet her. She is the reason why I teach. When I was 7 years old, I saw the movie, The Marva Collins Story, played by Cicely Tyson, I knew immediately that I wanted to become a teacher. Years later, after graduating from college, I flew out to Chicago to meet Mrs. Collins, and to sit in on many of her staff development meetings. What I learned from her in one summer, did not compare to the staff development workshops that I've attended in all my years of teaching in a public school setting. Its been over 20 years. When Mrs. Collins taught and mentored me , I walked away with an overflowed feeling of empowerment, a wealth of ideas, and NEW INFORMATION that would draw kids to you like a magnet. I eventually started my own school, which is modeled after Marva Collins' Method, and it is very successful. May her legacy live on.

Stop waiting for social media to teach you what you can look up/discover for yourself. I'm from Chicago and Marva Collins era. We had no social media or computers yet we learmed about ourselves because we took our own initiatives as Black people. There's no reason for Black today people to not know more of our Black TRUstories with all the technologies we have. Don't wait for an invisible entity that does not have our best interests and advancement as their agenda.

I actually attended Marva Collins school the artist formerly known as Prince and Mr T paid for 60 kids from Cabrini Green to attend her school I was in the 5 th grade to 6th and it was an honor to have her as an principal so taught us so much from college courses to life choices and I’m grateful for her sharing her talents and all the teachers there 🙏🙏🙏🙏
This woman was the epitome of teaching, the fact that her teachers didn't have a desk or chair speaks volumes. I'm ashamed to say that I have never heard of this woman until today. When I was going through the education system, we had to learn about kings and queens of England and great wars, nothing about our own history. History seems to have pushed her to the back row. Hello, I use to go to her school as well. I was looking for some old classmates. From 1981 to 1984. My last teacher was Mrs. McCoy. We had other amazing teachers too. I wish they had show them in the video. Also Prince did not show up. But he sent us Concert tickets. Also his group The Revolution showed up. I remember that day very clearly. Also Mr.T was in our 8th grade classroom. Sitting in a chair quietly. While we was working on assignment in the classroom. We cannot forget First Lady Barbara Bush. who came to visit the school. Also had a famous Basketball player who went to our school temporary. Due to his English. Mrs. Collins was a amazing Principle. Her staff was amazing as well.
I remember back in September 1980 I first attended there till June 1983 and came back to finish my last year c/o1987 I,m very thankful to attend Westside Preparatory School out of all the grade schools this was the best one I attended.

It's so painful to know that her magnificent work isn't being spread across the country by black people. Because she didn't conform to the government's form she was ignored and neglected. Such a beautiful model of what a teacher of children should do to free the mind. I hope this model catches fire and spreads across the Black nation. We are highly intelligent people. Actually, there is a high school, in Columbus, Ohio, called Africentric. Being a teacher himself, Charles Tennant wasn't satisfied with The Columbus Public School System. So in 1999, the brother started Africentric in his garage. Now, 90% of Africentric's graduates are going to college. The Africentric Lady Nubians, their girls' basketball team, have won their 7th state championship in 5 different divisions. Which is the most in the history of Ohio Girls' High School Basketball. Even though Marva Collins and Charles Tennant had never crossed paths, her legacy still lives on.
Agreed. Too many of our institutions die when the founders of them pass on or move on. I am sure a great deal of sacrifice came along with her dream, that others were unwilling to do. @pattycannon1804 u didn’t have a learning disability. The school system had/has a teaching disability. Everyone knows something, that the next person doesn’t. I absolutely hated certain subjects bc the school(s) lacked the teaching abilities so i showed no interest & didn’t care to wrap my head around. I’ve learned a lot of things as an adult by many reg ppl & teachers through youtube & google, things that should’ve been successfully taught in school.
I feel honored and blessed to be working alongside her daughter-in-law Cheryl Collins where we provide black students educational excellence! The chance to break the cycles of poverty, inequities and injustices.

The one thing that I love about Marva Collins is that she didn't wait for The Chicago Public School System to have a change of heart, or educate these inner-city kids properly. She saw the problem, and went and did it on her own. I'm sure there were some haters along the way, but she persevered. Secondly, visual proof that black women are brilliant, eloquent, and educated self- starters. Thirdly, the lineage of greatness that our women come from. Where are these black women today? She informed my approach: "A teacher's mouth is no prayer book" and children need to learn how to think (for themselves). Sometimes just to get to school is a great accomplishment deserving of our best efforts.

She was my teacher for 2 years when I was a kid and then for a summer program right before high school. In kindergarten this lady had us memorizing 3 page long poems. Will forever love her and hold her teaching dear to my heart.
I'm re-reading a letter that my grandfather sent me in 1981 tonight and finally doing things he asked me to do in it, such as look at this marvelous educator because I myself was a colossal Chicago private school snob at the time, and he was just dismayed and so, wrote me quite a screed. This is the most inspiring vision of education I've seen in a long time. Marva Collins' pedagogy was so enthralling her kids didn't even want to leave at the end of the day despite not breaking for gym or recess! The one-room schoolhouse age-mixing, interdisciplinarian, spiritual, and philisophical approach, can, as she says, only result in excellence. By golly, 6 graders were testing at college level and could point out the Greek, French & English 'ch' sounds. The other teacher is a strong, inspiring lady, too. I remember my dad, who was a school principal, raving about phonics, and boring me to tears. God bless her; may she RIP. I'm sure she has tons of students who will always cherish her for what she did for them. I promise that this day will be used, not lost.
I just want to say a huge thank you to the woman who started the school and the other teachers who aided her in teaching the children. Imagine 5 days a week 8-9 hours a day for weeks and years being encouraged, inspired, loved and taught things of this world and education for all the school years!! I feel very strongly that all of those children did exceedingly well in or out of school over the years. This was the one of the most beautiful programs I’ve ever seen. And to build not only the child’s self esteem but to continue to build the teachers self esteem also on a daily basis for weeks and for years, just wow! Thank you thank you thank you! 😢
Watching this brought me to tears. 20 years as a school psychologist in public schools, and i cannot recall at this time seeing all the love that was exhibited in that classroom. The affirmations, the positive touch, the positive tone and warmth in the way they speak to the children. I sit here and imagine how many fewer special education identifications we would have if this were the norm. The part where she said that she would care more about their success than them, if need be, broke me because today's children hear "i got mine, idc if you do get yours. If you dont care, i dont care". This right here is why i retired myself and have no desire to go back to public schools.
Same here. When she said, "Lord Jesus, Hallelujah he's reading" you can tell she really loved those kids. I imagine he was struggling and she was so happy to see a breakthrough. Very touching.
You can educate a child and not make the child. Let them be who they were meant to be. Guide their minds not change them. What a wonderful woman. Never heard of her until I started looking up black history.

As a future teacher I admire her standards. There is a dedication required of GREAT teachers. I dont remember being taught in that manner as a kid. I think her methods of teaching actually make a lasting impression on young children.
That's right tell how you are going to knock that head off their shoulders, telling them they have choices, and they are loved. Encourage them to used the brains positively. This woman is Amazing.
You're right because we still have the same mindset in the various Departments of Education. I've worked in education since 2001 and early on, I learned that the education system is set up to cause children to fail. The more they fail, the more people are hired and programs are purchased, which requires more money to be give to the NEA which uses it for political and social purposes rather than for teaching. The city where I live gets Ds and Fs EACH year from the testing, and yet they require more money. It's a shame! Kindergarten children are told to memorize 100 sight words rather than be taught Phonics. No wonder they can't read in third grade - it's because they only know the words they've memorized from K-2nd grade. So very sad. I am a Phonics tutor. Was taught whole words; Dick and Jane back in the 60s. Oh, how I wish I'd been taught phonics!!
I'm definitely going to use Marva's method for my grandchild. She was AWESOME!!! She's from Atmore, AL. I went to school in Atmore, AL and she was never mentioned.
Thank God for sending us Marva Collins, but the sad thing is that the Public School System is in such a condition that we needed a "Marva Collins" to begin with. Her paradigm of teaching and her labor of love should be the norm in public school systems, not the exception.

Watching this altered my environment from my home into Ms. Marva's classrooms as one of her pupils. When she asked questions I found myself answering back. And really engaged into her realm. Gr8 watch and very inspiring. 🙏💙

God bless this sista for all that she did. I have always been an advocate for independent black schools. "Free schools and free education." In minority (a catch all term) or heavily black areas, these areas have been reduced to third rate schools. A small percentage of black students are successful in academia, but what of the students that fall by the outside? Ms. Collins did have a vision. Unfortunately, not many shared it. I salute her.

Yes! I PBIS attempted to capture this. It failed because the teachers (en masse) didn't seem to appreciate this concept. It seemed they felt the onus was on the child to do better while they could continue to be sarcastic, ornery, and downright mean.
I’ve been inspired by Mrs. Collins ever since I watched the Cicely Tyson movie about her. I definitely recommend reading her books and learning more about her methods.
I wish I had a teacher like this growing up. I literally once had a teacher that used to join in when I used to get bullied in middle school. He used to fall asleep during class, I disliked going to his class.
Wow, I’m in awe. Ms. Collins and her approach, are a true testament to teaching...allowing the child to form a love of learning, and in turn loving themselves and becoming “lifters”. God Bless her and her crusade for humanity🕊
People can only predict we determine our lives. I grew up in Chicago and very few and far between was I ever taught like this. It's not too late for our children and grandchildren if we would remain teachable of what really works for our children who are our future.
Went to an elementary school that was created around the Marva Collin philosophy. I am so blessed to have been able to have MANY Marva’s in my early education. Did wonders for instilling confidence in my young black mind.

You can tell she was very focused and engaged in the learning of students..you do not see this in classrooms today..however there is a lot more behavior problems in the classroom..I wonder if its because the teachers are not interested in teaching...

Thank you for posting this. I remember watching "The Marva Collins Story" on TV and was very inspired. I wanted to become a teacher after watching the film but at the time, there was a surplus of teachers so students were discouraged from going into education.
Mrs Collins was brilliant! Because she understood the fundamental concept of "the three R's" and held them sacrosanct. That's why she was so successful because it WORKS!
Marva Collins is one of the greatest teachers that ever lived. She is a legend and is the standard to which all teachers should aspire. I wish I had the pleasure and privilege to meet and talk with her.

Also had a famous Basketball player who went to our school temporary. Due to his English. Mrs. Collins was a amazing Principle. Her staff was amazing as well.
I remember back in September 1980 I first attended there till June 1983 and came back to finish my last year c/o1987 I,m very thankful to attend Westside Preparatory School out of all the grade schools this was the best one I attended.

It's so painful to know that her magnificent work isn't being spread across the country by black people. Because she didn't conform to the government's form she was ignored and neglected. Actually, there is a high school, in Columbus, Ohio, called Africentric. Being a teacher himself, Charles Tennant wasn't satisfied with The Columbus Public School System. So in 1999, the brother started Africentric in his garage. Now, 90% of Africentric's graduates are going to college. The Africentric Lady Nubians, their girls' basketball team, have won their 7th state championship in 5 different divisions. Which is the most in the history of Ohio Girls' High School Basketball. Even though Marva Collins and Charles Tennant had never crossed paths, her legacy still lives on.
Agreed. Too many of our institutions die when the founders of them pass on or move on. I am sure a great deal of sacrifice came along with her dream, that others were unwilling to do. I absolutely hated certain subjects bc the school(s) lacked the teaching abilities so i showed no interest & didn’t care to wrap my head around. I’ve learned a lot of things as an adult by many reg ppl & teachers through youtube & google, things that should’ve been successfully taught in school.

The one thing that I love about Marva Collins is that she didn't wait for The Chicago Public School System to have a change of heart, or educate these inner-city kids properly. She saw the problem, and went and did it on her own. I'm sure there were some haters along the way, but she persevered. She was my teacher for 2 years when I was a kid and then for a summer program right before high school. In kindergarten this lady had us memorizing 3 page long poems. Will forever love her and hold her teaching dear to my heart.

I'm re-reading a letter that my grandfather sent me in 1981 tonight and finally doing things he asked me to do in it, such as look at this marvelous educator because I myself was a colossal Chicago private school snob at the time, and he was just dismayed and so, wrote me quite a screed. This is the most inspiring vision of education I've seen in a long time. Marva Collins' pedagogy was so enthralling her kids didn't even want to leave at the end of the day despite not breaking for gym or recess! The one-room schoolhouse age-mixing, interdisciplinarian, spiritual, and philisophical approach, can, as she says, only result in excellence. By golly, 6 graders were testing at college level and could point out the Greek, French & English 'ch' sounds. The other teacher is a strong, inspiring lady, too. I remember my dad, who was a school principal, raving about phonics, and boring me to tears. God bless her; may she RIP. I'm sure she has tons of students who will always cherish her for what she did for them. I promise that this day will be used, not lost.
I just want to say a huge thank you to the woman who started the school and the other teachers who aided her in teaching the children. Imagine 5 days a week 8-9 hours a day for weeks and years being encouraged, inspired, loved and taught things of this world and education for all the school years!! I feel very strongly that all of those children did exceedingly well in or out of school over the years. This was the one of the most beautiful programs I’ve ever seen. And to build not only the child’s self esteem but to continue to build the teachers self esteem also on a daily basis for weeks and for years, just wow!

Watching this brought me to tears. 20 years as a school psychologist in public schools, and i cannot recall at this time seeing all the love that was exhibited in that classroom. The affirmations, the positive touch, the positive tone and warmth in the way they speak to the children. I sit here and imagine how many fewer special education identifications we would have if this were the norm. The part where she said that she would care more about their success than them, if need be, broke me because today's children hear "i got mine, idc if you do get yours. If you dont care, i dont care". This right here is why i retired myself and have no desire to go back to public schools.
Same here. When she said, "Lord Jesus, Hallelujah he's reading" you can tell she really loved those kids. I imagine he was struggling and she was so happy to see a breakthrough. Very touching.

As a future teacher I admire her standards. There is a dedication required of GREAT teachers. I dont remember being taught in that manner as a kid. I think her methods of teaching actually make a lasting impression on young children.

You're right because we still have the same mindset in the various Departments of Education. I've worked in education since 2001 and early on, I learned that the education system is set up to cause children to fail. The more they fail, the more people are hired and programs are purchased, which requires more money to be give to the NEA which uses it for political and social purposes rather than for teaching. The city where I live gets Ds and Fs EACH year from the testing, and yet they require more money. It's a shame! Kindergarten children are told to memorize 100 sight words rather than be taught Phonics. No wonder they can't read in third grade - it's because they only know the words they've memorized from K-2nd grade. So very sad. I am a Phonics tutor. Was taught whole words; Dick and Jane back in the 60s. Oh, how I wish I'd been taught phonics!!

Thank God for sending us Marva Collins, but the sad thing is that the Public School System is in such a condition that we needed a "Marva Collins" to begin with. Her paradigm of teaching and her labor of love should be the norm in public school systems, not the exception.

God bless this sista for all that she did. I have always been an advocate for independent black schools. "Free schools and free education." In minority (a catch all term) or heavily black areas, these areas have been reduced to third rate schools. A small percentage of black students are successful in academia, but what of the students that fall by the outside? Ms. Collins did have a vision. Unfortunately, not many shared it. I salute her.

Yes! I PBIS attempted to capture this. It failed because the teachers (en masse) didn't seem to appreciate this concept. It seemed they felt the onus was on the child to do better while they could continue to be sarcastic, ornery, and downright mean.

People can only predict we determine our lives. I grew up in Chicago and very few and far between was I ever taught like this. It's not too late for our children and grandchildren if we would remain teachable of what really works for our children who are our future.

Went to an elementary school that was created around the Marva Collin philosophy. I am so blessed to have been able to have MANY Marva’s in my early education. Did wonders for instilling confidence in my young black mind.

You can tell she was very focused and engaged in the learning of students..you do not see this in classrooms today..however there is a lot more behavior problems in the classroom..I wonder if its because the teachers are not interested in teaching...

Thank you for posting this. I remember watching "The Marva Collins Story" on TV and was very inspired. I wanted to become a teacher after watching the film but at the time, there was a surplus of teachers so students were discouraged from going into education.
Mrs Collins was brilliant! Because she understood the fundamental concept of "the three R's" and held them sacrosanct. That's why she was so successful because it WORKS!
