I bought mine in 2008, In 14 years it has taken thousands of photos and is still going strong. Used it professionally and for my personal work. The Kodak CCD sensor is steller simply unmatched for the rendering it generates. Great video Matt,

Using Sony cameras since 2010 (currently an A1) with modern lenses and now testing a M8.2 since two weeks with some Voigtlander and Leica lenses, I can 100% subscribe to what you predicted at 21:25 !
The images right out of the M8(2.) are so much more vibrant, that it has blown me away. My children (Gen-Z, grown up with CMOS photos mainly from smartphones) immediately reacted when they saw these photos. The asked, what they could do with their smartphones in order to get this wonderful look...

Haha great story! This is why CCD sensors are so good! They need to bring them back! Enjoy!

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom ...although I am not sure, if it is the CCD principle (vs. CMOS) or if it is more about the thicker CFA (color filter array) which was used at that time, seperating the RGB components of the light more clearly and a different processing in camera in order to deliver a look closer to film rolls.
I think, if camera manufacturers want to, they could also generate these results with CMOS sensors, which are cheaper, faster and provide a wider dynamic range.

This video (and the one by Mattias Burling) sealed my decision to buy the M8. I was a 100% Fuji shooter, but hardly use my X-Pro 3 since I got the M8.🙈😅
I love how it feels, the real rangefinder experience and how the restrictions with the M8 made me more selective about my shots. + The colors and tonality.
Thanks for your great content. You are doing a great job!

One more point to add. The 1.33x crop eliminates vignetting when shooting wide open on most lenses as it is cropped out. You also get sharper images corner to corner due to the fact you are using the lens at it strength the centre.
    Cheers :)

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom many advantages to a cropped sensor. In the case of the M8 series I think it was smart engineering not to many cameras had a APs -H crop of 1.33x. I also like the fact you can download right from the camera with a USB cable without removing the baseplate. They removed the USB from the side and placed it underneath the newer series cameras. You have to by the advanced grip with the M240 and remove the M10 series, you have to baseplate to access the USB.

I've been with Nikon and Fujifilm (and still is at the moment) for many years and just got my very first Leica, the M8, two weeks ago. I'm totally in love with it! The pictures are stunning, both in colour and bnw, and I really like the simplicity of the handling and the sturdy quality feel of that brass body. I am so happy that I got the M8 since I also considered the Q. M8 was the right choice for me.

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Problem is finding batteries for the camera. Amazon is helpful in most ways in delivering what I need. With new batteries it takes up to 3 hours to fully charge them. That is why I get dummy batteries and have them working on all of my cameras so Ithe external batteries aren't charged and discharged frequently. External Power Banks and 1tb SD cards are a must. I am going to figure out how to do this with the Leica M8 with that darn bottom base plate that I keep missing that hinge to lock it down. Cheers!

If You really want a tiny setup I have bought myself the Nikon J5 and an adapter from Leica M to Nikon 1 CX Mount. There is the V version which has the Viewfinder on the first two versions but the third version have to get the one that goes on the hot shoe which has another shoe on top. It is hard using the LCD screen for focusing that is why I am thinking of the V series. Weight and size. BTW getting a Dummy Battery and already have most of the lenses and a 1tb SD card. 4 camera batteries and I have everything in my small bag that only weighs 5 lbs. Cheers!

Thanks for sharing. My M8 is now in service in Wetzlar. They do not have all the spare parts but still enough to polish up my 'old' M8. The previous owner also brought it in 2 times in Wetzlar for service. So although it is used in harsh environments the M8 do gets it's well deserved service from time to time.

I have the M10, but the Leica M9 was my first. In between I've had all the others, the M240, MM, M246, and the M9 is for me the camera that gave the most satisfying images either in colour or converted to B&W. Ok the resolution isn't as good as it's B&W specialist the MM but the images just had some punch and guts. Totally agree with this review, you could say less is more.

Along with the CCD sensor for the colors, the pixel pitch of the M8 sensor would definitely achieve more sensor saturation to achieve that look you talk about Matt.
I have a Nikon D3s that I just bought a few weeks back and I've stopped using my other Nikon and Canon cameras. The 8.46 microns pixel pitch really makes the images stand out and makes me want to keep shooting more and more.
Compare that to a D810 with a pixel pitch 0f just 4.87 microns, it really gives a very interesting saturated look to the pictures. I never shoot raw with this camera since I don't ever feel the need to now :)

Well It is 2023, and soon to be 2024, and I have decided I want to buy my very first Leica, a Leica M8, which is nearly 18 years old now. they are on MPB for about £1200, and I was just about to snap one up, but the risk factor has started to bother me, there are so many issues with an old M8!?! So would it be a better option for me to purchase a reconditioned Leica M8 from Leica? you would pay more? but would virtually have a new camera on the inside? you get a warranty also, I've no idea how much it will cost but I have my name on a waiting list, for when one comes up. There are hundreds of posts on the Internet, owners of Leica cameras, especially M8, reporting problems with the dead pixel line. Even new cameras had this and were returned for repair. Adding to this the failing shutters, for me the myth of a reliable Leica cameras that are built like a tank, has completely collapsed. These are expensive and prone to failure cameras, with extremely expensive service. • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom

Hi Ralf. Another photographer just commented who is used to a fast modern camera so I will share his commeny - "This video (and the one by Mattias Burling) sealed my decision to buy the M8. I was a 100% Fuji shooter, but hardly use my X-Pro 3 since I got the M8.🙈😅
I love how it feels, the real rangefinder experience and how the restrictions with the M8 made me more selective about my shots. + The colors and tonality."
Unless you are a professional and need to shoot machine gun style (like main do for weddings) the M8 is fine. I shoot models, fashion and weddings so I usually use my M240 but for "proper" photos I would use the M8 or moreso in my case, film. You can't get CCD film look (grain and colours on any CMOS sensor).
That's my 2p worth from using an M8.

Unfortunately, those early cameras are long dead. But I get a similar look from the Nikon D2Hs which has a unique Nikon built Jfet sensor and it's even more filmic. I know, three years old thread... but perhaps consider using a Ricoh GXR with A12 M mount instead of an M8. It also has no AA filter but a crop factor of 1.5 (even better reach) and a specially made microlense sensor so no funny colors.
Unfortunately discontinued and no rangefinder but if you can give it a try, I'm sure you'll be very presently surprised (especially with the optional EVF!).
Also works great with non-Leica lenses via adapter.
I enjoy using my GXR as a backup/ long reach companion to my 240s.
Having used the GXR for many years before getting my first digital Leica (I used and still use a film M3) I sort of "blame it" for my love of Leica cameras, the quality with M lenses was just too good not to try full frame Leica bodies.
