As a recently retired disabled Vet, I’m heading BACK to school here in Tucson just for my Welding Certification starting in August. Excited to get this going, a little concerned about the math portion though, LOL…
Awesome job men! I am 59 years old and a year and a half into welding, so I am REAL green. Question: Our instructors insisted on practicing open root dual shield flux core with NO backing strip which made no sense to me. Their reasoning was if you can do an open root, you will be that much better of a welder. Am I wrong to question their methodology?
CWB testing is a little different. We do a 6" weld plate. 3/4" of the start of the plate and end of plate are disregarded. However going up the plate coupon 1 and 3 are root bend coupons and coupon 2 In the very middle is a face bend but it's required you do a start & stop in the middle so your restarts are also tested.
Really awesome I never consider getting certified but now that I see what’s involved but thinking about maybe doing it at some point in the future I’m wondering if you guys have classes I’ve never really done welding before, but I really interested in it.
This is nice to do and all but it will just get your foot in the door. Anywhere you go is still gonna have you do their weld test, not just give them a piece of paper.
Sometimes all you need is a foot in the door. Especially if you don’t have the requisite 5-7 years of experience but they’re also looking for a certified welder.
@@noxapalooza6756 yeah, but you have to remember you are a lot of times competing against your peers and if a company is going through applications, who do you think is more likely to get the interview?
some have charts to refrence, even older ones may have them online somewhere. if not im going by puddle recognition, and sound mostly. doesn't matter what the machine says if the puddle is doing all the talking,
Excelente, hay muchos canales de youtube que no hacen esta certificación en vivo. Sera posible hacer en otros procedimientos de soldadura? Buen dia sir inspector!!!
Qiestion, with a 1/4" gap or 3/16" between plates how come you dont weld the two plates to the backing plate when you do the root pass? And if you do, how do you remove the backing plate after you cut the two strips for the bending test? I thought the backing plate was just to secure the two plates for welding but then it stayed after capping and even there when you cut it in the machine. Excuse my ignorance.
it is most defiantly welded solid. all 3 members become 1 in the root pass. the backing strap acts as a bridge between the two so you can weld on it with ease compared to an open root. you can remove the strap for bend testing with a band saw like jason did or even arc gouge it off. hell if you got the time you can grind the whole thing off. In the field a backing strap will not be removed after welding.
During the bend test. After you remove the strap, even before prep youll be able to see a line or not, that says you got the penetration. All 3 members should become 1 in the weld zone. You cant see the back side of the root during the test, however you can see some dark blemishes on the steel, darker the mark, more pen youre getting in that strap.
"Candidates ages 13-17 are permitted to take AWS Certification exams with the consent of their parent or legal guardian. Candidates must be at least 13 years old at the time of scheduling an exam." No experience is technically needed because this is just a test anyway, its up to you if you want to take it or not.
Correct, for that one specific cert. if the job requires the same test with 7018, thats a different cert. Youll have to look up Jasons classes, and as an added comment, the place that teaches you, cannot certify you.
@@jakecarter4407 Yes, it gets fused all the way down (if your root was good). It's a miserable process to remove the backing bar if you don't have that special torch tip, or if you're not comfortable with a torch in general
Just remember them certs dont mean nothing. Boss will just look at them and be like ok.... i don't care how many certs you have. You need to pass all our made up tests to work on the actual product which will be sink or swim. Most places give you 2 or 3 tries. Ut tests are common. Bend test is cheapest other than visual inspection. Xray little more pricey but depends what you'll be tested on depending on the type of work your gonna be up against. Some places you can use grinders, you should at least be able to if you need to do some cleaning but wire wheel could work. Cover passes are the toughest 1/8 inch reinforcement is all your aloud. Any mire more than that, you might be grinding that out and redoing the cover or they say you failed all because cover pass was over the tolerance.
youre right, Welding Certs are typically give and take. by that i mean you Get a cert when you get the job and they pull them when you leave. Almost every job requires a weld test to a WPS wether its AWS or not, likely youll have to test wether you carried the exact cert or not. It could however get you further in line on the application process and even in some cases may grant you to weld and skip the test. Hell some jobs (smaller shops) dont even test to any procedure. They maybe really excited to find an applicant with the cert that pertains to their work. But like you said.. its all circumstantial
It's great to get certified but it doesn't really do much if you're looking for a job. It might help you get in the door, it might not. You'll still have to take a weld test at the job and pass it. You'll still have to at least get qualified according to the job's WPS and if you leave that job, you gotta get qualified again at the next place. I wish i knew the welding industry was like this before i started. I still would have got into the industry but it would be nice to know you might have to jump through several hoops for any job you apply to. Trade school doesnt tell anyone this stuff.
Too much wire imp I like a good 25V 310 wire it’s super hot and wets nice and using a c25 at about 40 cfm best setting never failed a weld test yet and that what I use for my root and fill and I go a big colder on my cap because the plate gets 🔥
it was funny the inspector watch every procedure my mind come to few yrs ago a welder from Alabama carrye the ground to every place he goes to weld looks same the welder in this test put the ground in the test plate🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
LMFAO you can have all the certs you want, if you can't pass a weld test you aren't getting the job. With all that said. As veteran with all kinds of ASE and AWS as well as airframe certification with 10 years of experience. I was literally told by every company that I applied to, that I was over qualified. So I started my own company, I now have 2 contracts with SpaceX to design and build parts for them while those other companies are digging at the bottom of the barrel to get jobs just to stay open.
Wait wow that's too much just start splattering the welds everywhere and get it over with Don't forget to preheat pre-treat. I used to think I was okay at welding but I found out I'm a better grinder.
Remember guys: "Make every weld better that your last"
Yeah buddy 🤘🔥

Just finished my cert plate today for 3g flux getting the bend test Monday
Good luck!!!

Thanks Jason! I hope so too, gotta get practicing for the next one 🤘

Would you explain how you removed the backing strip?
Vertical bandsaw after cutting the straps out
With backing strip, how can you check root penetration?

What age do I need to be to start this certification test. And how much experience is needed before I was to start this

How does the backing strip get removed? Doesn't it all become one after the root pass?
There are a couple of ways you can do that, you can grind it or use an oxyacetylene torch with a rivet cutter tip to remove most of the material

Finally someone in the comment section speaks the truth.
What do you mean +1/4"? A half inch gap would have been way easier than the tests I've taken. 1/4 is just a little too small to do two root passes
That’s why we did one root pass with this test.
